O que você fará

We will get totally immersed into the celebration, because we will begin the day by going at first to the cemetery (This May not be possible due to local rules regarding pandemic time ) in order to welcome the dead one hour and a half we will head to the local market to buy groceries, fruits, bread , chocolate and everything we need to make our traditional altar at home, you can bring your dead relatives photos , so they can join us . After finishing the process of making an altar we will have a special lunch to get ready for the evening. We will arrange the things we need to take back to the cemetery at night , we will have an explanation about the traditional food we prepare for the celebration, and have a taste of it accompanied with a very good small cup of Mezcal (we will have a master mezcalier from Matatlán who will explain us the process and how to drink mezcal properly) , and you’ll know how really you should drink it . After that we will go back to the cemetery and town of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, which is about 10 minutes by car , and we will begin at the “old cemetery “, so you can see where people were buried years ago , and after we will go to our space in the new cemetery, where my grandfather is buried , so that’s but why it is our private space, there you’ll see how the cemetery turns in a party full of happiness. Or we can have a party at home .
Other things to note
You must be really curious , willing to enjoy this as a party, this day isn’t sad for us at all , also be open minded to really change the way you live for a day , and if you like to party , that is good , we want to get you involved in everything we do on this date so be prepared for small work.

I’m a local inhabitant from Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, most of my life I’ve lived closely the day of the dead in this town, that, inspired me to study and get a tourism administration degree, and even write a thesis about this celebration, i have learned a lot by researching about it from interviews with locals and seeing how the different activities take place on this date , it is so vibrant and contagious the way people get prepared, that I’m sure everyone should see It at least once in a lifetime . I’ve taken 3 groups to live this special day , because my family owns a special space where we can enjoy the celebration in a very deep manner .

Onde você estará

We will begin and finish the day by going to the local cemeteries, (this May change as we have to adjust to the new rules because of the pandemic) , then go to the old local market, to get the elements we need to make our day of the dead altar . After we get everything we need we will go to our home located about 10 minutes from Xoxocotlán, to make the activities we have prepared for you and also for you to see our lifestyle.

Jared and his family are the most wonderful hosts, I really couldn't ask for anything for unique and special for an experience. The whole thing was way beyond my expectations, we really felt like we were part of the family. If you want a deep dive into tradicional Oaxaca culture, this is not to be missed!

This was by far the best Airbnb experience I’ve ever had. I was fully immersed in an authentic day of the dead celebration with Jared and his family and felt as if I was part of the celebration as opposed to witnessing it. Creating the alter with flowers we dug up ourselves was definitely a highlight but there were so many moments that will forever stay with me. His mother, sister, and nieces were so warm and welcoming and I learned so much from each member of his family. Without a doubt, this experience has changed me as a person and I will continue to celebrate this holiday back home with the knowledge and memories of this magical day.

Wow! What a wonderful experience. Truly one of the best days of my entire year. I was a little worried at first doing this experience with other travelers but the other participants really made the experience whole. Jared’s planning attention to detail was all phenomenal. He had to make some adjustments due to COVID, but I could tell how much work he put into making the day great for us despite not being able to go to the cemetery. The location/his family house was magical and I don’t think I could have adored his family more. Not to mention his mom’s cooking was the best meal I had in Mexico. Wow, wow, wow. I wish all Airbnb experiences were this good.

This was fantastic. Like spending Thanksgiving or Christmas with a family—you get to experience the whole day’s preparations and participate in different ways alongside Jared’s family. On top of that, Jared added some special elements like the mezcal tasting because the cemeteries were closed due to Covid and ending with his sister’s birthday party. It was really amazing and we had such a fun time getting to know Jared, his family and our new friends and co-experience mates. Definitely the best thing to do for a local experience in Oaxaca. Oh and the food was SO good!

Quite a full day but a really fun one. I really felt like a member of the family. We met and checked out the graveyards, decorated Jared's grandfather's grave with flowers from the market, drove to his family's house, had a meal, helped create the altar, played with the kids, checked out the area, ate snacks and drank, made tamales, did a mezcal tasting, watched a traditional dance by the kids, had cake (it was a birthday), had our faces painted, went to the graveyards to see them all decorated, and hung out and drank and had fun late into the night. I am glad I chose this experience because I am a solo female traveler and when I first booked my trip I figured I could just walk around at the graveyards for this holiday. Not that I felt unsafe, but the expereince was so much more meaningful with a local and a specific grave, and a day with a local and his family. Jared's family went above and beyond to entertain and feed our group. Traveling on my own would have been difficult so I am glad I had a specific taxi for our group. We also had the option to go to another town the next evening for conitnued celebrations in Etla. That was also incredible and a once in a lifetime expereince. I do recommend this experience. It is very casual and relaxed and a marathon. haha! But I am so glad I chose to do this. I had a wonderful time.

Truly magical experience with Jared and his family over Day of the Dead. We started the experience visiting both the old and new cemeteries in Jared's home town of Xoxocotlán so we could decorate his grandfathers grave. This gave us a really personal feel to the festival as Jared explained the reasoning for each intricacy. We then headed to his home to meet his amazing family and celebrate with them throughout the day doing lots of different activities (such as making an alter, food tasting, making Tamales, how to make tortillas, Mezcal tasting, dancing with his family, face painting) and socialising. We then waited till nightfall and headed back to the cemetery to celebrate with his grandfather. Jared was knowledgable the whole time and knew pretty much everything we asked. We left feeling friendship with Jared and his family which was an amazing feeling. This is a unique and local experience that you won't find anywhere else with someone who's really passionate about his town and their traditions. P.S Jared's mum is the best cook on the planet!
