O que você fará

Be amazed by San Agustin's Art Center. The first ecological art center in Latin America. An inspiring place where art, nature, architecture and history meet.

We´ll meet in downtown Oaxaca to begin our journey to San Agustin Etla (40 min. drive).

Our first stop will be at the San Agustin Church. Only a brief stop to see the local church.

After 5 min, we´ll arrive to the San Agustin’s Art Center, which once was a huge mexican textile factory , then forgotten, and later turned into an amazing art center by the oaxacan artist Franciso Toledo.

We´ll visit the stunning Soledad Vista Hermosa church (a rare find in Oaxaca being a neo-gothic church). Then, we´ll enter the art center and walk around the gardens, the art galleries, go up the terracota stairs, walk by the old factory buildings and the old chimney. You´ll notice how plants, stone, metal, and water create a perfect harmony with the architecture of this unique place.

Then, we´ll drive 15 min. to the bustling market at Villa de Etla. Here, you´ll experience an authentic oaxacan market where local farmers and vendors gather to sell all kinds of things. You´ll find local food and drinks, cheese, ice cream, chocolate and more.

We´ll drive back to the city and drop you off at a location that is convenient for you.

I was born and raised in Oaxaca. I have traveled to many places within the state and I love to share my travel knowledge and experiences with others.

The San Agustin´s Art Center is an inspiring place where everyone can enjoy a mixture of art, unique architecture, nature and history all in one place. It´s one of Oaxaca´s hidden gems that you cannot miss. My goal is to provide you with a unique experience. I would love to share this experience with you.

I have lived abroad (in the USA) during my college years and I have also traveled to several countries. On my travels, I have experienced the need of local experts who can show the sites that are off the beaten path in unique ways.

Onde você estará

The art center was a fully operational textile factory back in 1883. Years later, Francisco Toledo, a brilliant Mexican artist, bought it and transformed it into today´s San Agustin art center. A place for education, exhibition, and production of art.

The Vista Hermosa church is the only neo-gothic church in Oaxaca.

Only on Wednesdays, local vendors gather on the streets of Villa de Etla to set up a very authentic and bustling street market.

Really a great tour. Ivan was very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome, unhurried. In addition to visiting the art center we explored the Etla area, went to the market and learned a lot about Oaxaca in general. Highly recommend!

We had a great time with Ivan. We really enjoyed traveling with him, and are especially grateful that he took our physical limitations into account, cheerfully. We learned a lot about the area, felt very well looked after, and shared stories and laughter. We wouldn't hesitate to join another of his trips.

Ivan discussed the history and architecture of the beautiful old churches we visited. We then explored an old textile factory. He explained the history of the factory and how it was rejuvenated as an art complex after being abandoned for many years. The view from the factory is breathtaking. On the way back Ivan took us to a market, not one usually visited by tourists. There we had lunch like the locals would, sitting on a bench watching our delicious meals being prepared. This is an experience we could not have done on our own. If you like art and culture, I highly recommend a tour with Ivan.

Ivan is a really great guide. His English is wonderful, he’s very personable and an easy companion for the day. The art center was a perfect capstone to our time in Oaxaca - it sits in the hills, away from noisy Oaxaca City, and highlights the work of lauded Oaxacan artist Francisco Toledo. We went to see the art center, but got with it a nice and quiet morning in nature. I traveled with my parents - 75 yo - and they found it equally as lovely. The next day, I returned with my husband and 2 babies - it is that worthy a retreat.
