Let's go local!

My tour will take place around Takadanobaba Station (just 2 stations from major stations like Shinjuku Station OR Ikebukuro Station), which is also the station closest to a well-known Japanese university, Waseda University. As there are quite a few universities, companies, language schools around this area, the competition between restaurants is also REALLY high, thus a great area for us to explore the best local food.

We will first head to my favorite ramen shop (15 min walk) where we will enjoy the award-winning bowl of ramen, where I will share with you the tips & tricks and insights about ramen in Japan.

After which we will head to a local Izakaya where we will have their signature dishes such as skewers (chicken, or even eel skewers, trust me this is quite rare yet super delicious), oden (another must try) etc. while we enjoy some Japanese draft beer or sake.

Throughout the experience, I'll share with you about the different interesting cultural experiences I have had in Japan, and share with you my personal favorite restaurants in Tokyo that you should definitely visit. By the end of the session, we’ll have enjoyed wonderful dinnerS together, while you go home with great memories and insights on Japanese culture to share with your friends and families.

David was great! He took us to a Michelin rated ramen place, which was amazing, Recommended what we order, and how to technically eat ramen (even though it wasn’t our first time). Then we got a local dessert on our way to the izakaya that we wouldn’t have thought to order on our own. It too was delicious. Then, we found an izakaya that we wouldn’t have even known it was a restaurant and the food was DELICIOUS! Everything was great. He was super friendly and knowledgeable about so much, we appreciated his insights and we all had a good time storytelling and discussing various topics. I would go again and highly recommend his experience to anyone!

This guided food tour was a great experience. My wife and I met up with David at 6 pm, and we proceeded to walk around the Takadanobaba Station area for a bit. David explained his experience there and why he wanted to give food tours of the area. We started at a chicken broth ramen shop, had a quick dessert on the street, and ended up at a local yakitori dive bar. Our last stop at the yakitori dive bar would have been completely inaccessible to us without David’s guidance. It didn’t seem as if any staff there spoke English, and it was a very crowded, very local establishment. Throughout, David explained what made each dish special, and even introduced some sake to us. Our conversations were easy and interesting. Overall, a great time and great experience!

David epitomizes exactly what Airbnb Experiences are all about ... a local who has a passion for a topic and is willing to share it with a visitor. I've enjoyed Experiences now in four different international cities and really enjoy the unique flavor each host brings to the situation. I found myself with a long layover in Tokyo and having spent some time in Japan I was planning to do essentially what David already had arranged -- get on the train, ride 30 minutes, get off and start looking for noodle shops. Without David I never would have wandered down an alleyway, couldn't have read the signs anyway, and besides some of these places are really small, six tops and they're full. David described the uniqueness of the noodles we were sampling, explained the nuances of the sauces and flavors and genuinely all around is a very interesting fellow. I really enjoyed learning more about what it is like working in Japan, learning a little bit more about this really unique and complex culture and really appreciated David's personal touch. Thanks, David. In fact, I'm looking forward to doing this again on my next trip!
