O que você fará

We start in the morning at around 9:30am after arriving at Indigo Snail Boutique Homestay, Ta Van village. We have been practicing the traditional techniques for many years and will share our knowledge with you. First we do batik you will be given 2 pieces of cloth. The first piece is made using traditional Hmong symbols in hot wax using a bamboo tool . The second piece you are free to create your own design.

The next step is the process of natural indigo dyeing, the cloth is dipped in the dye vat that we prepare. It takes time as the process requires many dips and the cloths need to rest between dips. Repeated dips deepen the color and make the dye long lasting. The wax will later be boiled out of it so you will have your finished pieces by the next morning at the earliest, or normally after 2-3 days. If you don't stay at my home then I will send the finished pieces to your address in Sapa.

We have a lunch break from approximately 12 to 1:30pm at my home (home-cooked family style lunch). In the afternoon you will learn Hmong embroidery, you will be given a piece of cloth and detailed instructions to embroider some patterns to create a bracelet. Finish at around 4pm.

Don't worry if you've never done batik or embroidery before! I will show you step-by-step .
We are located in Ta Van village in Sapa Valley. We are a 30 minute drive from Sapa. Message us for travel advice.

I'm a Hmong mother of 4 children and I've lived in Ta Van, Sapa my entire life. I started working as a guide, running treks in the mountains and rice terraces when I was a teenager. I love my family and my community, and I have been working hard to make a better life for all of us. I love sharing with my guests the local Hmong culture. I've practiced Hmong textile traditions for more than 15 years.
In recent years, I've also traveled to villages in the mountainous northern Vietnam to learn more about traditional textiles and natural dyes of different ethnic groups. Hmong batik and indigo dye is an art that I love so much, and I run this workshop because I deeply feel the responsibility to preserve it and to share it with more people.

Onde você estará

The workshop is held at my home: Indigo Snail Boutique Hmong Homestay in Ta Van. Ta Van is a peaceful village nestled within the beautiful Sapa valley, about 45 mins drive from the now bustling Sapa Town. My home is in the valley overlooking beautiful rice terraces and we are surrounded by mountains. On beautiful days we can have the workshop outside in the backyard or if it not we hold the workshop inside our large communal area.

This is a really original experience ! You get to make a piece yourself and get to keep it. Do take the time and learn about the background of the art and the village. Sue doesn’t talk about it. Learn the typical patterns to help you create your own piece. I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to do book it. You’re in the village and you’re with the locals.

Sue is an exceptional host. She has the most incredible homestay nestled amongst the terraces, and she has prepared a beautiful day. We started with the batik, and Sue is extremely patient and kind. She allowed us to take inspiration from some of her works but didn’t structure the activity too much, allowing us a lot of freedom to be creative. We chose fried noodles for lunch, which were great and a solid potion. After that, we began on the embroidery. The best part was that Sue was sitting with us, working on her own embroidery between helping us. Again, we took inspiration from her (masterful) work, and she helped us or adjusted the pattern so that it was doable for us. I was really slow, and we had to walk back to our homestay, so Sue kindly offered to finish my embroidered key ring for me. I have done classes in almost every country I’ve visited, and this was the best experience. I wish I was staying in her homestay and getting to know her and her lovely family more closely. TL; DR: if you are on the fence about a whole day investment, just do it. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Sue is a real Hmong. Her family lived here for 6 generations. The people of this family have been born and raised in this town for hundreds of years. I had a wonderful and amazing experience here. Sue taught me traditional dyeing and traditional embroidery. Even if I didn't do well, Sue and the other teachers taught me patiently. She can speak English very well. She had a lot of pride in the culture of Hmog. I was very moved. There should be more people like Sua in this town. Thank you. I respect you, Sue!
