O que você fará
The most important part about foraging for mushrooms is staying safe. I start every walk with a few basic ground rules about mushroom identification.
The first 20-30 minutes of our experience is a beginner's crash course to wild mushrooms, covering the foundations of foraging, mycology, edibility, foraging resources, and more.
Once the details are out of the way, we head into the Brackendale forest along a gentle forest trail. As we spend the next 90+ minutes exploring, we'll keep an eye out for the many different fungi which call this forest home. This will give you hands-on experience foraging, picking, and identifying some of the most common mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. If we are lucky, we may find some fun surprises along the way.
The trail forms a loop with no elevation gain or uneven footing.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING COVID AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Masks may be required, notice will be sent prior to outing
- Foraging waiver of liability is required for participation
- COVID-19 waiver of liability is required for participation
- Social distancing is required
Other things to note
This tour is for mushroom identification only. No edibles.
Street parking is ample and free.
Dogs are allowed, provided they are well behaved.
We walk rain or shine, so come prepared for wet weather. Rain pants, jackets, and shoes are recommended. The trail may be muddy.

I am a long time student of the Coastal Rainforests of British Columbia. I've been foraging in these forests as a citizen scientist for nearly a decade. I learned the basics of fungi identification from local experts and deepen my knowledge annually through ongoing expert-led workshops, talks, and festivals. I'm lucky that the PNW has so many world-renowned mycologists living here, a valuable resource.
5 years ago I began hosting beginner fungi identification walks. My expert knowledge of the local species has earned me the community nickname "The Mushroom Lady." When there are questions about fungi in Squamish, I'm often the first place people turn for answers. Every year I continue to host several by-donation talks to give back to my community and make the fantastic world of mushrooms safe and accessible to everyone.

The hike begins at the Brackendale Fall Fair Grounds, which are located just behind the Brackendale Art Gallery. There is ample free street parking along Government Rd.
Our talk starts at the trailhead or just inside the field, depending on the weather. The walk is a 90+ minute loop through the forest. Its quiet, moss-covered, and full of fascinating fungi.
There are several trails we may take, but all lead back to the trailhead.

Jess was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a ton on this walk and spotted so many fun mushrooms (and even got to take some home). The walk was nice and we spent plenty of time wandering the forest to find mushrooms. She also provided us with several resources for our own reading. Overall really fun way to spend a morning!
