O que você fará
To start I will talk about what's special about glass for fusing and introduce you to the strange world of frit, stringers and strikers, confetti and noodles. Next we spend a few minutes on health & safety issues of working with glass and associated equipment. You will also learn about ‘cutting’ glass and the rules to follow for success. Practising on some scrap glass will give you confidence to cut out various shapes. If you have already given some thought to a design, you can choose your pieces. If you need some inspiration, I will help you look through ideas to find a design that appeals. After sketching your ideas on paper, you can build your creation. I will help you with this, explaining the options as we go. You can use transparent glass to take advantage of the effect that light, particularly sunshine, has on glass or use opalescent glass, which gives a completely different, but equally attractive, quality found in the likes of candle holders and vases, where you don't want to be able to see through the glass. Finished work is delivered to the kiln, where the glass will be heated to around 720 C and fused into one piece. It will then need to be cooled overnight (this is called annealing) so that the glass is acclimatised to room temperature. All that then remains is for you to arrange to collect your piece or have it posted. Note: P&P chargeable at cost.
I love working with glass! Over the last fifteen years I have attended many classes to learn about the qualities of glass that make it stand out as an art medium, such as making stained glass windows, painting on glass & fusing. When I retired I was able to buy a kiln, which opened up the possibilities enormously as I no longer needed to rely on a college to be able to fire a limited amount of fusing work. I am just at the beginning of finding out what powdered glass can do and welcome anyone who is like-minded to come and spend the day with me to explore this aspect of its many qualities. As a qualified teacher I enjoy taking people with me and i like to think I can explain everything you need to know in a clear and logical way. I also know that the most important thing is to enjoy yourself!
