I found it to be an incredible experience. Diego is a fantastic host who is generous with his time. Having said that, I was disappointed that there was an undisclosed cost of 450 pesos for transportation to and from Querétaro. This should be included in the description of the tour.

I definitely recommend this trip to the opal mines and Tequisquiapan and other small towns. Diego is super friendly and welcoming and has a lot of history to share about the region. It was very fun climbing around and looking for opals in the rocks in and around the mines. Great day trip and wonderful way to experience something a bit off the beaten path.

To be clear, this experience is not for the faint of heart or body—Diego will carefully ask you about your fitness level and health concerns before the trip (in Spanish). That said, we are in our late 50s/ early 60s, from the US, and did just fine with climbing up and around working opal mines, complete with craggy rock and steep deeply-rutted dirt road (requiring a ride in 4x4 pickup truck). And I must say it was well worth the effort to learn from Diego, a fourth-generation miner, and Sandra, a university teacher assisting as translator (300 pesos well-spent), just how difficult and artful a venture this opal mining can be, as well as something uniting a community in ways we’d never expected to learn. The environment was spectacular and beautiful, with wide-open views. We loved seeing the miners’ equipment and religious altars, and got quite taken with the thrill of searching out (and finding) little bits of opal—clear, yellow, orange, red. We were also impressed by observing Diego’s father at work polishing stones and sharing gorgeous opals and pieces of jewelry. Mostly, we valued Diego’s generous spirit and commitment to this art form. He picked us up in Querétaro (another 300 pesos well-spent) and treated us to a delicious breakfast at a stand in Tequisquipan. We loved hearing about his life and work, and from him and Sandra both, the challenges facing this way of life. If you can handle the physical exertion, and love to learn, we would very highly recommend this opal mining experience! Thank you!

Our experience with Diego left us wanting to do more excursions with him! It was better than expected! Before the event even began Diego was amazing with his communication, answering all of our questions! He and his co-excursionista, Janis, met us in Querétaro and drove us all the way to the Opal mines. He drove us up to the mines in his 4x4 truck where we hiked all around them and learned about their history and witnessed Diego’s using the pick ax to break off pieces and show us the differences in quality of the different opals. He has a trained eye to recognize all that we are not able to. His love for the mines is obvious as he explains it all to us. We came to a place at the mines where he lit a fire and we ate delicious gorditas and quesadillas that his aunt had prepared. We also shared his cafe de olla and listened to a historical account of his uncle’s experience in the mines. On our way back to town Diego led us through an (optional) hike by a fresh spring where he bushwhacked our way through a trail adorned with diverse flora. Our friends were huge grasshoppers showing off and a few caterpillars that they warned would not be so friendly if touched. Janis was our translator and she helped make our adventure all the merrier! She never missed a beat in translating every word Diego spoke as well as adding lively fun and humor to our experience. On the way home we were surprised with an extra! We stopped and shared artisan crafted beers in a charming brewery with amazing murals and old hand painted VW’s. The conversation with Diego and Janis was stimulating and just amazing fun! The perfect finale to our adventure before returning to Querétaro! We will definitely do many more adventures with Diego and Janis in the future! We feel that we’ve not only gained the experience they shared with us but also two amazing friends!
