I lived on this village before and I would like to introduce this new concept of tourism as a Rural Community Based Tourism. The traveler can have a real local life experience based on villager's daily activities.

I have been in the hospitality & travel industry since 1992 and my latest assignment in hotel was a General Manager in Bali in 2017.

It is time to give more attention to rural community to support improving their welfare. My education background is a Micro Master on " International Hospitality Management" from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on November 2017 and I have taken a certificate program of " Global Hospitality Management " at Cornell University on March 2015.

This was a truly amazing experience, extremely authentic, we were both made to feel very welcome like a part of the family. We got to meet many members of the local community as well as dining and living with different families. We got to experience the day to day life of the local people as well as explore the spectacular nature in the area. We had an overall amazing experience, ranging from a day spent on a private island where we caught our own food which we later cooked, unexpected snorkelling spots and a trip to a local market as well as so much more. It’s an experience that I would love to do again and would highly recommend to anyone seeking a genuine getaway.

This is a truly unique experience. Askar is a dedicated and extraordinary host who is passionate about the concept of community-based tourism. The people in the village were exceptionally welcoming and open to having visitors in their midst. My teenage daughter and I learned so much in the three days we spent in the village. The second day we were there was truly one of the most magical days we have ever experienced with travel to an uninhabited island where we searched for clams in the crystal clear water, ate amazing food cooked over the fire, and learned about ecological efforts in the area. it is important to note that this is not a luxury experience. This is true village living and you do as the villagers do including eating on the floor, using an Indonesia style bathroom facility, and getting muddy if the tide is low. You must be open-minded and willing to travel outside your comfort zone to enjoy this experience. If you are this type of travelers, then I know you will have a fantastic time!

This experience is highly recommended for people seeking an organic and ethical cultural immersion. Labuhan Burung is one of those places you never forget. In just a few days I fell in love with its people, culture and nature surrounding this beautiful village. For three days, I was a member of Daeng Aco’s and Daeng Rana’s family, a multigenerational host family that embraced me as their own. They taught me about family dynamics, ethnic and linguistic diversity and tolerance in the community as well as everyday activities for the people of Labuhan Burung. The strong familial ties were felt from the first greeting when everyone welcomed me to that last morning, when the neneks (grandmothers) dressed me with their traditional Sulawesi attire: this was a highlight for me as it symbolized acceptance and love on their behalf. Furthermore, the interaction with diverse languages and ethnic backgrounds was enriching and taught me about the acceptance and tolerance that exists in this village: there were times, when the people would be communicating in several languages at once! Lastly, the exploration and new experiences that took place were just phenomenal! From having lunch by untouched beaches, holding sea urchins in our hands, laughing with the youth as we walked along the beach, eating the most diverse and delicious home cooked Indonesian food, meeting other educators like myself and watching a beautiful sunset from a local sandbar! Every single experience was organic, “de la tierra,” from the womb. The village of Labuhan Burung is located in Sumbawa, a regency that is already off the beaten path and a paradise for those seeking unspoiled nature. While it does take time and effort to travel to Sumbawa, the collective behind “Labuhan Burung Rural Community Based Tourism” makes sure that every detail is taken care of so our experience is as smooth as possible: from the meeting points, drivers, ferry rides, food vendors, boat owners and homestay families. The design of this program is to have both the Labuhan Burung team as well as the travelers to have a positive interaction and experience from beginning to end. Special thanks to my now lifelong friends Daeng Askar, Daeng Buyung and Daeng Aco’s family for making this a memorable experience for me. I learned so much from each one of you. You made me feel at home and consequently, I learned how to love Labuhan Burung as my own Indonesian home. Terima kasih!
