O que você fará

All aboard! Set sail on an Islander 36 from the Berkeley pier to the historic Angel Island – the San Francisco Bay's largest island.

I'll show you the ropes as I cast off from the dock and hoist the mainsail and jib before exiting the harbor. From there, it's a long port tack toward our destination. Depending on the wind direction, we'll tack a few more times to reach Angel Island by late morning.

At the docks, we'll be greeted by park rangers and barking seals as we disembark. From here, we'll head past the beach toward the hills, ascending 788 feet up switchback trails to the top of Mt. Livermore. Pack a lunch and a pair of hiking shoes for a 3-mile hike up, followed by lunch at the summit.

While eating lunch, you'll be surrounded by a 360-degree panoramic view of the Golden Gate, city front, and the entire Bay Area. Then, we'll hike back down the other side of the ridge, and take time to smell the Eucalyptus trees before getting back on the boat for a downwind run as the sun comes down behind the Golden Gate.

I am a native son of California, and especially the Bay Area, but it wasn't until my twenties that I discovered the Bay itself as a sailing mecca. I began making up for lost time, sailing whenever possible, getting my USCG captain's license, and becoming a sailing instructor at a school in San Francisco.

I've also studied the early history of California and many uses of the Island, from its discovery in 1775 by Spanish explorers to the present day.

Putting both of these hats on, I offer a tour of Angel Island and San Francisco Bay that encompasses both its natural and human history.

Onde você estará

Six miles of wind-swept Bay water separate the Berkeley Marina and Angel Island – the most prominent island on San Francisco Bay. We depart from O Dock and arrive in Ayala Cove before picking one of the numerous hiking options to take on the island. This experience will give you a sense of where everything is located in the SF Bay Area – from the Golden Gate in the West to the Berkeley Hills in the East, Vallejo in the north and SF in the South.

This was such a great experience from beginning to end. Charlie was very friendly, but also chill, which is pretty much the perfect combination as far as I'm concerned. The sailing portion of the experience was wonderful. Charlie taught us a few sailing tips and let us participate if we wanted to. The path from his Berkeley dock to Angel Island was beautiful and just the right length of time. Then on Angel Island, he led us to the top of Mt. Livermore (a surprisingly easy hike) for the best 360-degree view of the Bay hands down. I highly recommend this experience!

Had a great experience sailing and hiking with Charlie today. Charlie taught us how to sail, and the view on the ocean is amazing. The hiking on Angel Island is magical, it was very refreshing to walk on the trail after a small rain. Highly recommended experience!

My son and I had an awesome day on the water with Charlie. The ride to Angel Island was really fun and my son really enjoyed being able to help around the boat. We'll be booking another trip with Charlie in the future!
