I am an experienced AirBnB host, and have been giving tours of the smallholding for almost a decade.

At Farlands, we are self-sufficient in growing fruit and vegetables. We grow a large variety of crops, from spinach to good king henry to globe artichokes. We keep chickens, and ducks, and rear turkeys at Xmas. We have two beehives.

We grow soft fruit, and have an orchard of 65 varieties of apples in addition to pears and plums. I graft all the trees. We’re experimenting with perennial veg, and trying to move away from sowing/planting every year. Although we’re not strictly organic (we’re not inspected) we stick to organic methods. We’re no-dig.

I give presentations to interested groups on self-sufficiency and apples, and I’m a member of the Northern Fruit Group.

This experience gave us great insight into living off a small holding. Having lived on the plot for 10 years, James has a passion and expertise that he freely shares and made us feel v welcome. He was particularly good at speaking to our children (ages 12 & 10) asking them questions and given them factual information that left them amazed and wanting to find out more. Their favourite part was feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs!

James is welcoming and from greeting you outside his beautiful historic home he straight away immerses you in all things smallholding with infectious enthusiasm. ‘Perennial veg!’, ‘Honey is amazing’ and ‘compost is the engine of the garden’! We had such fun and would have loved to stay longer and learn more in depth. A fun morning and a great introduction to smallholding ways!

We attended James' smallholding tour in January - even though the fruit and vegetables may not have been in full bloom it was an ideal time to go to learn about the techniques and work required to grow your own fruit and veg. We learned loads from James - and have been greatly enthused to become more self-sufficient (starting off with runner beans!). Came away with some freshly-laid eggs - Thanks James! A book pre-order has also been made.

We had a lovely time visiting James' smallholding and learing about him. He personalised the tour to our interests and the time of year. The tour was very interesting and fun! James also gave us tips to go walking from the smallholding afterwards. It was a great insight into James' way of life and he gave us some great tips for us to try in the garden!

We spent a lovely winter morning with James being shown around his smallholding. It was great to be let in to his world and be infected by his passion - especially in regard to his in-excess of 60 apples varieties grown around his home! Wonderful location in a secluded spot. Well worth a visit.
