O que você fará

My tour of Montreal history goes beyond the standard fare. This is a city of saints and sinners; of harmony and conflict. On this tour we will walk through the history of a city defined by its cultural diversity and clashing narratives. From the Haudenosaunee village of Hochelaga to the protests of 2021, all are covered!

Our journey takes us from McGill University through the Golden Square Mile to Concordia University. After taking lunch on St. Catherine's Street we will walk to Old Montreal. Exploring the history of this oldest of North American cities (and grabbing some ice cream) we will walk up "The Main" through Chinatown into the Redlight District.

The stops will include all manner of fascinating and historically significant locations. These will largely based around the contentious social and political history for which Montreal is famous. However, we will not neglect the fascinating life stories of so many great Montrealers. From Leonard Cohen to Marie-Joseph Angélique, all are given their due place in the rich tapestry of this city.

I am here to provide personal recommendations for where to go and what to see for the duration of your trip.

My name is Houston, I am a born and raised Montrealer and I have a passion for this beautiful place I call home.

I have lived in places as far away as Scotland and China but there truly is no place like Montreal. I would love to share my love and knowledge of this city with anyone interested in learning beyond the standard history found in the museums.

In terms with my life outside of the tours, I completed a degree at McGill in history and political science and I am currently a graduate student at Concordia. In my spare time I cook, I hike, I make maps and I research for projects such as this.

Fun fact: Montreal is 60 years older than Saint-Petersburg!

Onde você estará

The city of Montreal is a place of conflicting narratives. A place which has since time long past been a meeting point of peoples. The native Haudenosaunee people call this place Tiohtià:ke, the place where the people parted ways - Montreal is a gathering place, but also a place of division and strife. The city itself is a contested space which has for 200 years lain at the heart of the Canadian nation, her great metropolis.

Houston did a great job of leading us throughout the city and giving us a great overview of the beautiful city of Montreal, while educating us about the dark side behind some of the beauty. He definitely knows his city history, and does a good job of keeping everyone interested and entertained.
