I have been an outdoor educator since 1992 and it has become my passion. I am the founder and owner of one of the largest outdoor education companies in Costa Rica, where we offer canyoning, sea kayaking, multi-day jungle expeditions, tree camping, and climbing adventures.

My other passion is to share amazing experiences that promote stepping out of one's confort zone in order to grow.

In our team we all are Wilderness First Responders by NOLS, with CPR, and Swift-water Rescue international qualifications. We also are Coastal Sea Kayaking Instructors certified by the American Canoe Association.

We also use Garmin Satellite In-Reach two-way communications devices in all our adventures to provide the most advance tech at the moment of requesting Medical or Evac assistance in case of an emergency.

This was a wonderful experience that will last me a lifetime, however I feel like we could have been better prepared. We are not physically fit and this hike was extremely demanding on two of us. However, the other members of our group were in better shape and only found the hike to be moderately difficult with some challenging parts. Day One of the hike involved an elevation climb of 700 ft to the El Bonito ranger station. The distance we hiked was 5.6 km. We covered this distance before lunch to avoid the heat of the afternoon. My best recommendation for this (and the entire trip is to wear quick dry clothes and hiking shoes that dry easily or hiking sandals.) You will be hiking through several streams and it will be a pleasure to get your feet wet, however then you will be wearing wet shoes for the rest of the trip. In one of the streams you will have the opportunity to bathe in a waterfall. By lunchtime you will arrive at the rangers station where your accommodations will be bunk house beds. The do recommend you bring sleeping bag liners, you will need them. Showers, running water, and flushing toilets were available. We spent the afternoon resting and doing our best to keep cool. Our guide took us on a wonderful night hike after dinner. Day Two was more physically demanding, it involved another elevation gain of 700 ft followed by a decline of 1400 ft to the beach. The distance we hiked was 6.5km. Three of these kms were fairly flat with the elevation gain and descent taking about 1.5 km each. This means a good bit of the incline and decline were fairly steep. Once again we arrived by lunch. Once we were at the beach, our accommodations were tents set up under a roof with air mattresses. We were free to play in the surf to our hearts content. Showers, running water and flushing toilets were available. That night we were taken on another night hike. Day Three was kayaking back to Golfito. We stopped twice, once at a location to snorkel and once at a beach to enjoy the waves. I would recommend wearing water shoes because the rocks on the beach can be quite sharp. Finally we stopped for lunch at a restaurant the just across bay from our final destination. Our guides, Ferdinando and Daniella, did an excellent job of leading us and provided snacks of fresh fruit at most stops. I am overweight and a bit of an eater so I did wish I had brought my own to supplement the quantity. The quality was excellent however. Our guides were also very encouraging when the hike became too strenuous for me, allowing rest stops and slowing the pace when it became necessary. Fernando even cut me two walking sticks when my bad knee began suffering with the climb and descent. I have spent my review space here doing my best to help anyone interested be better equipped to face the difficulties of the trip and none of the space to tell you how wonderful it was. It was absolutely amazing to see the jungle flora and fauna and to experience Costa Rica in a way I never believed I could. It really felt that other than our party, we were completely alone in Piedras Blancas. Even though I found the experience to be extremely difficult and at times I feared it was beyond my abilities, I would definitely do it again. This time I would make sure I was about 40 lbs lighter and with better foot wear. Also, know when you book the tour through AirBnB, you must book it as private if you want it to be. I misunderstood and booked it as a group and we had other people join our experience. We made fast friends and I really enjoyed their company, but I did regret that they had to hike at our pace when it was evident that they could have handled much faster. If you do a group hike, know that you will be traveling the pace of the slowest member and that may mean hiking in hotter temperatures than you would prefer.
