O que você fará

A short walk through Congo Square culminating in a talk at my studio in the Treme neighborhood about Hoodoo, Voodoo, Black Carnival Traditions, the deeds and misdeeds of my own Louisiana Creole ancestors and other lesser known aspects of New Orleans history and culture. In my studio rum bar you will enjoy a shot of rum and a chance to check out my art and black masking Indian attire. My house has long been a place where friends come to ground themselves in the cultural vibration of the city. I am so excited to now share this experience with you!

Other things to note:

THIS IS NOT A TOUR. It’s not focused on site seeing but rather an EXPERIENCE that uses a few sites as a backdrop, so if you are looking for a site seeing tour this will not meet your expectations.
With that said, while the majority of my presentation will be at my studio, we will also walk the equivalent of six blocks through the park and stand in one place for long periods. Please wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated because the heat can be oppressive, especially in the summer. BTW - NO PHOTOS of my studio or myself are allowed, thank U.

I'm an artist and 12th-generation Afro-Creole. My family fled Louisiana in 1970 to escape racial oppression. I returned 15 years ago to reconnect with the land of my ancestors. I make art with wood salvaged from my Katrina-damaged home in Treme, and mask as a Medicine Man in the Black Masking Indian tradition. My art is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum and in the homes of art-lovers worldwide.

Onde você estará

The experience takes place roughly an hour in the park and an hour at my studio, which is seldom open to the public. After Hurricane Katrina, I converted former slave quarters into an art studio, Hoodoo shop, and guest rooms.

Beautiful, moving and informative. Jean Marcel is a wonderful, engaging story teller. My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. Very eye opening experience. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for something deeper and more meaningful than the typical haunted tours. Real New Orleans history from someone who's experienced it first hand.

This tour was an amazing way for me and my boyfriend to end our ValentinesDay trip in NOLA. We learned soo much rich History that sparked an interest in me to explore my own Family tree. This was the epitome of what I search for when traveling. An enlightening experience!!

Jean-Marcel speaks from the heart! He recounts an immense amount of history during this tour! Dating back centuries and spanning the global interactions, colonization and influences of the French, the Caribbean, Africa and the rest of the United States, on the developments of the city of New Orleans, both culturally and economically. It was eye-opening! It had much more to do with a charismatic, delightfully animated and hilariously entertaining, scholarly examination of French Quarter culture, as opposed to being a tutorial on how to do "Voodoo" as we know it. This experience helped us to understand where the stigma came from and what "Voodoo" really is, from the perspective of African culture. Jean-Marcel's Artwork is also very mysterious and beautiful. While inside his petite, cozy Art studio, we enjoyed viewing his pieces, along with Mardi Gras costumes that he has created through the years that have precious trinkets attached to them that have various mystical value and significance. The shots of Rum were smooth and rich! Loved the entire experience! My fiance and I left feeling more enriched, with a cultural context within which to understand this our first trip to Mardi Gras.

This tour went above and beyond our expectations. He was so knowledgeable and down to earth. The time flew by and I would gladly have paid extra to have spent an entire day learning with him.
