O que você fará

Work with biologists to conserve the sea turtle population at Pacuare Beach

Help trained researchers patrol the beach in Pacuare to look for nesting adult female turtles.

If we find a turtle, we’ll take biometric data from her before collecting the eggs from her nest and taking them back to the safe hatchery. We aim to relocate 100% of the nests we find in order to avoid poaching, predation, and erosion. Be prepared to walk 14km (8.7 miles) round trip on the beach during our shift.

This is a social impact trip where 100% of what you pay goes to the Latin American Sea Turtles Association (LAST).

Our three days at the camp were really impressive. We learned a lot about sea turtles and could watch them hatching during our night shifts at the beach. Only downside: The cabins would definetly need some renovation. We had a little termite nest in our shower and the matresses were super uncomfortable. Nevertheless it was the absolute highlight of our Costa Rica travels and I can totally recommend volunteering there.

Truly a once in a lifetime experience that has a positive impact on the marine environment! Be prepared for ‘roughing it’ while enjoying the nuances of many other cultures as you, other volunteers and the staff work and play together for the benefit of these endangered turtle species . I very much appreciate how the LAST program included some of the local people as part of the team. What a valuable and rich experience!

The folks at LAST are heroes for what they do. The work they are accomplishing is making a great impact on the survival of the endangered sea turtle species. The entire crew was welcoming and accommodating. During my particular experience, one issue that came up was that the bus industry went on strike, and we had to do a bit of figuring out how to get me where I was supposed to be. Of course the strike had nothing to do with LAST, but that’s just a bit of general information for future visitors. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend it to the adventurous, those passionate about conservation of endangered species, and those looking for a trip that’s off the beaten path.

Our experience with LAST was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Although the amenities were very basic (no hot water, limited electricity, limited cell phone service), the experience you will have here will be like something straight out of a national geographic documentary. We saw so much wildlife: iguanas, howler monkeys, crocodiles, basilisks, and leaf cutter ants, just to name a few. We were also very lucky to have witnessed a leatherback sea turtle on the beach during a night patrol, preparing to lay it's eggs. We also helped prepare the hatchery for sea turtle eggs by digging sand for a couple hours a day, which was a good workout. Fabian, the head biologist, was very knowledgeable and passionate about sea turtles, and has dedicated his life to the conservation of them. All the assistant researchers were also very knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, our experience with LAST felt like a summer camp with a unique hands on experience with the conservation of leatherback sea turtles. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who is passionate about helping with the conservation of leatherback sea turtles.
