Bab Taghzout (pronounced Bab Tarzout) is a popular district whose alleys are full of history ...
Bab Taghzout is located in the north of the medina, just 15 minutes walk from the Jemaa el-Fna square and accessible by car from the Koutoubia and the Bab Doukkala gate.

Unlike some neighborhoods,
Bab Taghzout did not give in to the sirens of tourism. Its narrow streets have preserved a real village life: a market on the ground, small stalls, a traditional oven where locals come to cook their bread. Of Almoravid origins, the Bab Taghzout gate and the Sidi Bel Abbès quarter to which it was attached in the middle of the 18th century, offers an important cultural and historical heritage.
Especially the zaouïa of Sidi Bel Abbès, who is the most famous of the seven protective saints of the city of Marrakech. A former teacher (12th century), fully devoted to Islam, he based his doctrine on the ethics of giving. He was the defender and the consoler of the poor, the disinherited, the unfortunate, the handicapped, especially the blind.
The religious complex that bears his name was built in different eras. While the madrasah and the mosque date from 1605, the fountain and the zaouïa (convent where the disciples devote themselves to prayer, incantations) are older.

The great philosopher Averroes who stayed in Marrakech at the height of the city before going extinct in 1198, was also buried in Bab Taghzout before being exhumed and buried in Cordoba his hometown.
