Bukit Cempaka or Frangipani Hill is a 20 acre oasis located atop a hill top with views in every direction and a short distance to the beaches below. Draw the curtains in the bedroom and you are instantly looking across the South China Sea sea to Pulau Kalambu.
Access is via a steep gravel driveway where you need to use a low gear. Electricity in Sabah is poor in country towns . There can be times when the A/C and water pump cut out. If you can work with these conditions you are welcome to book

O espaço
The home is equipped with a new washing machine and flat screen TV for guest use. There is no TV reception, as such so we recommend that you bring a USB with movies or an external hard drive. There is a portable bluetooth speaker to play music. There are towels and bodyboards for use at the beach. There are towels and linen for use during your stay.

Acesso do hóspede
With 20 acres to explore among a combination of gardens and natural tropical jungles. The experiences are never ending. We are continuously trying to make improvements at Bukit Cempaka.
The roads around the local area are under constant maintenance due to monsoonal rains in the tropics, as such many of the roads have many potholes and are gravel in some sections. The home is located on top of a hill, accessed by a steep gravel road that has some steep corners. Despite ongoing maintenance and improvements, maintaining the road all season with heavy rains remains an ongoing challenge due to the secluded location. It is our intent to keep making further improvements to the driveway. Currently the driveway can be a challenge to those only familiar with a bitumen surface. We recommend keeping your car in a low gear and maintaining torque on the drive up.
Our goal is to try and produce vegetables and source fresh food locally. Please help yourself to any of the fruits and vegetables in season on the property. We are growing a number of different mango species, rambutan, avocado, lemons, limes and of course bananas. As our name is Bukit Cempaka (in English Frangipani Hill), we have over 200 frangipani planted with many imported seed variants from Australia and Thailand as well as local variants, that we continue to add to this collection.

Communications / Directions
Given I live in Australia and am in a different time zone I urge visitors to obtain a local phone/sim to contact Paul. Using whatsapp or other apps with queries do not always come through in a timely manner to myself or Paul.
Finding Bukit Cempaka can be a challenge that's why one of the photos has a photo map . You will need this to find the property. Here are the GPS coordinates that can be used with google maps. 7°00'31.5"N 116°44'13.5"E

Cleanliness

We make every attempt to ensure the house is clean. However living in the tropics means we have little geckos (lizards running around especially at night leaving behind their poos on the walls and floors. The vacuum can be used to minimise the amount on a daily basis. There is also pre and post departure check list that Paul will attend to for your convenience.

Rubbish
There is no garbage collection at Bukit Cempaka. Therefore what you bring in, you need to take out. In each town there are large garbage collection points that you can dispose of your rubbish. Please do not throw food waste outside. This attracts rats and in turn snakes.

Electricity
Electricity supply can be somewhat intermittent, especially during the wet season when strong winds can knock over power lines. I therefore suggest that you maintain 2 large buckets full of water in the shower and one by the toilet. Refrigerated food should be placed in the freezer to reduce the chance of it going off. “ Brown outs” are common and during these occurrences the air con will struggle to stay on, fans turn slowly, etc. We have applied for a further upgrade, however like life in Sabah everything is slow.

Water
There is no town water only Tank water. Whilst we clean the tanks annually we suggest that you avoid drinking the water. We suggest that you buy a case of bottled water in Kudat. A minimum guide is 1.5 litres per person per day. There are also reverse osmosis refilling places in Kudat.
Albeit you are in the tropics, Sabah has a distinct dry season from April through to mid July. We therefore ask that you conserve water, as the only water available is that caught from the roof, feeding the tanks.

Food
Should you not wish to prepare your own food, there are a number of basic food outlets along the beach front . In Kudat township there are a number of basic supermarkets that have most of the essentials. I find Jaya Murni, on the Airport Rd in Kudat, to have a well laid selection, I also suggest that you try the local fish market and vegetable market for in season local produce.

Emergency
There is a basic first aid clinic in Tiga Papan and a Hospital in Kudat next to the main Police headquarters. For any serious bites or infections I suggest you go to the Kudat hospital. Any minor ailments please ask Paul to explain where Dr Angela’s clinic is located in Kudat.
