Wake up to the sound of birdsong and stunning views across the valley! We welcome you to stay in our beautiful Edwardian terraced house in our the aptly named "Sunshine Room", within the riverside village of Calstock, a World Heritage Site and within the Tamar Valley AONB. A perfect spot for peaceful relaxation and walking the many trails through the valley (less than 5 minutes from the back door). Only 40 minutes by car or train (on the scenic Tamar Valley Line!) from Plymouth city centre.

O espaço
Our house has a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of gentle light and space. Old rustic features such as fireplaces and exposed beams combine with modern design features and objects that we have collected from our travels around South and South East Asia, to create a truly unique place to spend time. The house has a long sunny back garden with apple trees and a large willow tree that feels private despite the gardens either side. A wooden table and chair set are available for guests to use for alfresco dining in the warmer months (we will upload pictures of the garden soon!)
Calstock is a quirky, lively village with extremely friendly locals (some real characters!). There is a relaxed atmosphere which attracts artists, musicians and many other creative souls. The village has a long and colourful history, it was once a flourishing mining, flower market and boatbuilding village. Mining for silver and copper, arsenic and manganese were historically important industries here. Calstock sits in a loop of the River Tamar, so much so that it has something of the character of an island. You drive into the village and turn around to go back out again - it's not on the way to anywhere. This makes it feel very special and it certainly has its own unique charm and old time character! It is a wonderful area to explore the wild ruins of the villages mining heritage, a peaceful place to be for nature lovers, bird watchers with wonderful walks directly from house.

Acesso do hóspede
The house is laid out over three floors, the entrance is on the ground floor. The ground floor includes a double bedroom " The Sunshine Room", and next door the shared living room which you are welcome to use. If you go downstairs one level there is a basement level with the shared bathroom and kitchen/dayroom which backs out on a long garden. On the first floor is "The Rose Room" which consists of two adjoining bedrooms one with a double bed and a smaller bedroom with a bunkbed (this can be slept on comfortably by children or adults). Both "The Sunshine Room" and "The Rose Room" are rented out to guests.
Use of garden with seating areas for relaxing or dining on warmer days!
Parking is on street parking so guests may not be able to park right outside the property if the street is busy but there is always a space available somewhere on the terrace.

You will not be short of stunning walks locally! There are numerous walks around the wooded valley particularly around the National Trust Tudor House, Cotehele House estate. Or you can acquaint yourself with the village by taking a circular walk around the riverside or stray off up into Harewood or through the woodlands to Danescombe Valley. The Tamar Valley Nature Trail sees you snaking along the River Tamar up to Chimney Rock with amazing views back down the river. A walk up Kit Hill, a 400 acre Country Park, the highest point in the Tamar Valley, is a must for the fine views and fascinating history. We have lots of ordinance survey maps of the area for guests to borrow and can recommend lots of other spots for local ramblings and ones further afield.

More information...
The house is a 3 minute walk to the centre of the village. Here you can find two cosy, dog-friendly pubs, which serve a good selection of food (and The Tamar Inn sometimes has live music!), The Boot Inn does a very yummy roast on a Sunday, Lishe, a idyllic cafe with delicious cakes and cream teas, an ice-cream parlour, an art gallery exhibiting art work, jewellery and ceramics by local artists in the tamar valley, a well equipped shop (with lots of fresh yummy fruit and veg, freshly cooked pasties and bread!), a small complementary therapy practice 'The Haven' offering massage, yoga, reflexology, homeopathy and shiatsu, and Calstock Arts, a community arts centre located in a beautifully converted Chapel on the banks of the River Tamar. Their carefully selected programme includes; folk, jazz, classical music, comedy, film, theatre, talks and exhibitions. Their current programme of events can be viewed at their website 'Calstock Arts'.

There is plenty of opportunity for river trips, kayaking and general watery activities or you can try out tree surfing at the 'Tamar Trails Centre', a 15 min drive away. The centre is the main hub for exploring the 25km of trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders that follow old mineral tramways and railways. We have plenty of pamphlets detailing all of these activities and with info on how to book.

The pretty market town of Tavistock is but a 20 minute journey by car or bus and has a really interesting old indoor pannier market and a stunning historic high street with ample opportunities for shopping in individual boutique shops and delicatessens. From Tavistock you can access the Dartmoor National Park for some breathtaking moorland walks.

If you have a hankering for some fresh sea air the nearest beaches are along the south coast, the closest being Seaton, Looe (which has a idyllic seaside town), the beautiful port and fishing village of Polperro. All about a 40-50 minute drive away. If you go a bit further and if you’re up for a bit of a hike then Lantic Bay will reward you with one of the most stunning locations in Cornwall without a doubt. The walk from Lantic Bay to Lansallos Bay is one of our favourites. You can also venture to the north cornish coastline. The beaches at Bude, Crackington Haven and Boscastle are all about an hours drive from the house. Crackington Haven is a small coastal village just West of Bude. Once a small harbour importing coal and limestone from Wales, which narrowly escaped industrial development in the 1800s, it is now a small unspoiled, almost secret, cove. Although is can get fairly busy in the summer, its a lot quieter than the beaches nearer to Bude. It is a great spot for body boarding and surfing with the right conditions!
