The Larimar Apartment is a gorgeous self-contained, roof-top self-catering penthouse with double bed & pretty en-suite shower room. Your kitchen is just a few steps across your airy private terrace. Located in a quiet cul de sac in the magical old medina, just a minute's walk from the crafts & cafés. You are also welcome to use the shared spaces in our riad - including elegant dining room, sumptuous Moroccan seating area & plant-filled second terrace. Monogrammed robes & towels. Super-fast wifi!

O espaço
** If you are already in Morocco at this time, Essaouira is the perfect place to relax during the 'lock down'. You can still walk on the beach and enjoy the seclusion of our beautiful roof terraces. There are little shops to buy food, restaurants are open until 8pm and we have two kitchens for your use. We can also arrange evening meals in the riad during your stay. The town is not full and our manager Corinne will help you in every way possible during your stay**

** We understand some travellers are concerned about booking a holiday during the Coronavirus epidemic. Please note that we offer a generous, fully flexible cancellation policy should your plans need to change at the last minute**

Very quiet and private, yet located in the heart of the medina.
One-minute's walk to shops/cafés - and two minutes to the fruit/vegetable market.
Six minutes' walk to the beach and port.
Free super-fast fibre wifi and internet access.
Romantic bed canopy, slippers, Azure House towelling robes, and high quality shower gel.
John Lewis high-quality cotton bedlinen, cushions and throws.

Your recently refurbished birds' nest penthouse with lovely, light-filled, en-suite wet room - with a brand new sky-blue tadelakt plaster finish - opens out on to the pretty blue terrace on the third floor of our beautiful 18th-century riad, where blue ceramic pots filled with plants create a relaxing place to drink coffee, eat breakfast, or read a book in romantic seclusion.
A few steps away at the other end of the blue terrace you will find your private well-equipped kitchen - including coffee machine - enabling you to self-cater in style and eat at your leisure.
New for 2021 is a covered dining area outside the rooftop kitchen with comfortable upholstered seating and a second table - the perfect place to read a book or eat a meal, whatever the weather.

With an en-suite wet-room with shower, adjacent to your bedroom, you will be able to spend as much time as you wish here, feeling completely relaxed and self-contained.

A flight of steps will lead you up to our second 'Richard' terrace - decorated in Marrakeshi-style with terracotta walls and a hammock, as well as a shaded seating area. After enjoying both sunny terraces, with their lush greenery, why not spend some time in our elegant salon downstairs where you can enjoy the sunlight that fills the central atrium. Here there is a lovely fireplace for cosy evenings.
Through an archway you will find the dramatic dining room with 8ft long table and soft lighting. The kitchen is fully equipped with a coffee maker, brand new fridge, electric oven and gas hob. It contains all mod cons to whip up that Moroccan meal or maybe just some toast, scrambled eggs and a nice cup of tea.
After dinner, you can curl up in the sumptuous back-lit Moroccan seating area and read a book, play a board game or enjoy a film on the widescreen TV. Or just retreat upstairs again to your private terrace and birds nest apartment with shower room and kitchen.

Dar Azrak - The Azure House - is the ideal location for your stay in Essaouira, less than ten minutes walk from Moulay Hassan Square, the beach, the port and the main places of discovery of the city.

It is also an exquisite showcase of high-quality Moroccan craftsmanship including such finishes as:
• Tadelakt - the beautiful, labour-intensive polished plaster that adorns the lower living area and your private bathroom.
• 'Bejmat' terracotta tiles laid in attractive herringbone style on the ground floor.
• Zellige - the intricate mosaics that decorate the downstairs kitchen.
• A 'sedari' - a Moroccan seating area where you can while away an idle hour or five, reading or watching TV.

PRE-VISIT LETTER

A pre-visit letter will be sent to all guests at time of booking, detailing arrangements to meet you as well as giving other useful information including airport transfers, as well as our bespoke tours, treatments and activities. We also offer the option of a restaurant meal delivered to the apartment on your first night (or subsequent nights) so you can truly relax and switch off.
We can arrange many activities including: Horse or camel rides, quad biking, hiking, surfing.
Corinne can show you the best shops for artisan handicrafts and house decorations.

Essaouira has a beautiful maritime climate averaging 17 degrees in winter and 28 degrees in summer due to the cooling sea breezes (the perfect escape from the searing heat of Marrakesh).

There is also a well inside the house - see if you can find it. All the houses in the 18th century medina of Essaouira traditionally drew their water from private internal wells. But today there is lashings of hot and cold water.

CHILDREN

Children are more than welcome to stay. We provide a travel cot for infants, with fitted sheet and coverlet.

Please note, we do not currently include breakfast as this is a self-catering holiday let with a private kitchen, not a guest house or B&B. However, we are delighted to provide guests with complimentary fruit, bottled water and traditional cakes on arrival. We can also recommend a wonderful little literary café under the ramparts, just two minutes' walk from The Azure House, where you can enjoy a beautiful breakfast (30-40 dhs), real coffee, and an extensive collection of Moroccan picture books - while listening to the pounding surf beyond the medieval wall.

FURTHER BEDROOMS AVAILABLE

* If you wish to travel with friends or family, then please consider booking the two other double rooms in our pretty riad which share a bathroom on the first-floor landing. The Azure House can sleep six people in total. You can either rent the entire house including The Larimar Apartment, or just add on one or both extra bedrooms. This makes it the perfect option for multi-family/multi-generational holidays as both the main house and The Larimar Apartment are self-contained units - each with a kitchen as well as a shower room. Please see our other listings for more information*

Onde você estará

Essaouira, Marrocos

The maze-like old medina of Essaouira is a pedestrianised wonderland. A laid back, but visually intoxicating place that is a bit like walking into an oil painting, and where it is safe to walk alone. There are innumerable coffee shops, cafés and art galleries to inspire and amuse. Fantastic and affordable restaurants abound, and the daily catch of seafood down at the harbour is a sight to behold as 500 blue-painted boats surge into the port and disgorge their catch to the merchants on the quay side.
There are roof top discoveries to be made for orange juice and coffee all over the old medina, while the new town rivals Marseilles for a beach-friendly vibe. You can surf here, ride dromedaries or horses in the surf, or learn to kite surf.
So, if you fancy art, music, a car-free medina, a slow-as-camels hippy vibe, seagulls, surfing, sea food, sand dunes, French cuisine, two cosy roof terraces and 3,500km of Atlantic coastline...then don't hesitate.

I'm an author, journalist and picture framer who has had a 30-year-long love affair with Morocco. I've created several homes with Moroccan interiors in the UK, including a house featured on Grand Designs in 2001, having first visited Essaouira three decades ago. At that point, the route to Marrakesh was a dusty B-road and much of Essaouira's new town was nothing more than wind-tousled sand. It has long been my dream to own a holiday home in Morocco, and I'm delighted to share Dar Azrak - The Azure House - with you. I have also been inspired by my travels in Morocco to create Bluebell - a shepherd's hut in West Sussex, UK, which features Moroccan touches in her interior design.

My French house-manager, the wonderful Corinne, will do all she can to make your stay as seamless and enjoyable as possible. She speaks French, English and some Arabic. Do ask her if you need help with excursions or a trip into the artistic heartlands of the Berber community who live nearby. She will be delighted to help. She can also offer treats including restaurant food delivered to the riad, massages with Wafaa, camel treks, and cookery classes. She is also a great local authority on the best interiors' shops, and places to chill out or eat.
