Meldola, Emília-Romanha, Itália

Meldola is located in the Bidente valley, about 12 km from Forlì, along the provincial road that goes up the river Bidente (the ancient river Aqueduct) which changes its name to Ronco in the vicinity of this town. According to the most recent hypotheses of historians, it was built on the remains of a Theodoric period villa (5th-6th centuries) whose surviving mosaics - visible at the Archaeological Museum of Forlì - denote Ravenna reference models.
Meldola was governed by the Calboli family, who obtained the vicariate from the Papal State, and later by the Ordelaffi, who definitively conquered it in 1350. They took over at the end of the 14th century. the Malatesta family, which was replaced by Duke Valentino, son of Pope Alexander VI, and then - for a very short period - also the Serenissima.
Between the end of the eighteenth century and the second half of the nineteenth century, without prejudice to the period of Napoleonic domination, Meldola belonged to the Doria - Pamphili family.
The town, pleasant to visit, is organized on levels that run parallel to the Ronco river. The great bridge of the Venetians, which leads to the city, would have been built according to tradition during the short period of Venice's government: the renovations of 1934 revealed that the foundations rested on stilts, suggesting the attribution to skilled architects lagoons.
The construction of the imposing fortress that still dominates it today is due to the Archbishops of Ravenna. And even before the year 1000 the fortress was the subject of conflict between the Ravenna Church and the local power; it then passed to the Guelphs and then to the Ghibellines until 1283 when Count Guido da Montefeltro made it his last refuge in Romagna.
The Rocca, which dominates the city and is today in an advanced state of conservative restoration, and recently the Municipality, owner of the building, has started consolidation and restoration works. Steep and cobbled streets branch off from the castle that lead in a few hundred meters to the central Piazza Orsini, overlooked by the most ancient and noble Meldolesi palaces and the Loggiato Aldobrandini, built in 1609 by the homonymous family, who landed the city walls to leave a tangible mark of their government on the city. The loggia is characterized by a long arched façade and by an architrave bearing the stars and saw, heraldic motifs of the patrons. The square is closed by the elegant bulk of the Orsini Palace, built in the 18th century, once home to noble families.
Along the central Via Roma, leaving the square, you will find the Church of S. Nicolò on the right, where the image of the Beata Vergine del Popolo, patron saint of the city, is preserved.
Half hidden behind the imposing civic tower (18th century), clearly visible from Piazza Orsini, there is a jewel in the panorama of the small theaters of the province: the Dragoni Theater, named after the famous Meldolese musician who lived in the sixteenth century. The interior consists of three tiers of boxes with a gallery and is decorated with Doric columns and arches in the late sixteenth century style. Next to the theater are the long arches of the Pavaglione, born in the nineteenth century as a space used as a silk cocoon market and now transformed into a place for meetings, exhibitions and fairs.
In Meldola we recommend a visit to the Silkworm Museum, dedicated to the memory of Ciro Ronchi, illustrious spinner of the city; the seat of the Museum - which can be visited by appointment - is in via Roma. The museum itinerary allows you to learn about the silkworm breeding cycle, which was particularly flourishing in this locality, the work tools, the first silk fabrics produced in an artisanal way.
In the vicinity of the apartment we find everything within walking distance: library, playground, restaurants, cellars, laundry, parking, sports facilities, green areas, pedestrian areas and cycle paths
