Lugares para ficar em Casola in Lunigiana
Welcome to my home, a large newly restored rustic country house offering peace, tranquility & beautiful views of unspoilt and undiscovered Lunigiana, northern Tuscany. It is a large house and I have 6 separate en-suite private rooms/suites available. Several common areas, terrace, pool, garden etc are available
A lovely quiet home offering sanctuary from the hectic outside world. This is a rustic historic country house, renovated whilst maintaining as many of the original features and paint effects as possible resulting in an 'authentic shabby-chic' style... Within easy reach of both skiing and the beautiful Tuscan coastline, including Le Cinque Terre. This listing is for a suite on the second floor consisting of a romantic painted double bedroom (king size bed), lounge/2nd bed and bathroom accessible from lounge. Luxury bathroom has double-ended bath, washbasin and toilet & bidet. All linen/bedding is pure white cotton and of superior quality. When booked together with the loft room on this floor you can benefit from a private lounge which links the two rooms to create a large suite for up to 6 people. Breakfast is included
This is an opportunity to visit a little known area of Tuscany called Lunigiana. Still unspoiled by commercialism and mass tourism, it retains a truly authentic Italian feel. The villa is at the centre of a small hamlet so not at all remote but there are no shops or services here. All usual services (bank, medical centre, pharmacy, trains, post office, shops, supermarket, bars, restaurants etc) are all just a 10-15 minute drive down the hill.

    Fazzano, Toscana, Itália

Villa Del Leone is grand, period villa with 5 large bedrooms • Beautiful landscaped garden with 3 terraces • Panoramic views over the town and the Apuan Alps • Original features including floor tiles, fireplaces and an ornate marble staircase • Just 10 minutes walk to the medieval, cobbled piazza where you'll find restaurants, bars and shops • 30 mins drive to the coast • Close to several airports (Pisa 1hr, Genoa 1.5hrs, Florence 2hrs and Bologna 2hrs)
This is the former house of the town Notary set on the outskirts of the medieval, market-town of Fivizzano. It is in an area of Tuscany called Lunigiana - which is famous for it's hiking trails, numerous castles and stunning hill top villages. The Italian Riviera is only 30 minutes drive away - where you'll find Lerici, Porto Venere and access to the UNESCO listed Cinque Terre. Bedrooms There are 5 bright, spacious bedrooms with beautiful views. 4 on the top floor, and 1 on the floor below. Each bedroom is furnished with bedside tables and lamps - and comes equipped with towels and fresh linen. There are hooks to hang things on, but there are no chests of drawers or wardrobes. Please note the downstairs bedroom has a (comfortable) inflatable mattress. Bathrooms There are 2 good sized bathrooms - one situated on the top floor with a bath and shower, and the one below with a shower. Please note that although clean and functional, they are quite dated. Dining Room The dining room (situated off the lounge area) is very spacious and comes equipped with a 10 seater dining table - perfect for a group dinner. Lounge The lounge has beautiful views over the town - with a large, comfy wrap-around sofa and a striking, original marble fireplace. There is a 55" TV with both Netflix and Amazon Prime available to watch. There are also Sonos speakers here and in the kitchen. Kitchen The kitchen is a good size and comes equipped with a large fridge-freezer, a toaster and a microwave. There are plenty of pots and pans, and all the crockery, cutlery and glasses you'll need. Aircon There is no aircon at the villa - however as this area is 300m above sea level it is cool enough at night not to need it. There are however fans in each of the bedrooms. Garden The house is set within a large, beautiful, landscaped garden - containing fruit & olive trees, palms and a range of mature plants. A long driveway takes you from the ornate gates to the house. In front of the house, a large sweeping set of steps takes you to another gate which the house can be accessed from. We have a gardener who visits regularly keeping it well tended.
The town centre is just 10 minutes walk from the house. Fivizzano is a market town - with regular events happening in the cobbled piazza. Although the outskirts contain many new buildings, the centre is a medieval, walled village with cobbled streets and beautiful old buildings. The town has everything you need including 3 restaurants, many bars and shops. It even has a hospital. Please note this is authentic, rustic Tuscany - so the restaurants, although friendly and serving delicious food, are not fine-dining.

This is a stunning and very large recently refurbished historic country house in the middle of wonderful Tuscan countryside. You will have exclusive use of the villa, garden and pool on a self-catering basis. 5 bedrooms, comfortably accommodating 12 people, encourage you to come together with friends and family to rest, recharge, relax and return to nature, or else discover this very special picture postcard landscape. This is the authentic Tuscany.
This beautiful rustic country house is of historic interest, having once been the home of the family of national hero Carlo Del Prete. Now sympathetically refurbished after decades of neglect the villa once again provides wonderful family accommodation. Ideal for large families or two families sharing the house offers a retreat from the busy-ness of life and surrounds you with nature and stunning views of this unspoilt area of Tuscany. Ideal for exploring the nearby villages, including the famous Cinque Terre, or for simply relaxing in the garden whilst the children have fun in the pool...
This is rustic, rural Tuscany at its best. There is plenty to do in the surrounding areas, two towns at the bottom of the hill with all services (bank, post office, first aid, supermarkets, bars and cafes etc) 10-15mins drive away. Also plenty of attractions just a few minutes further - natural spa with outdoor pool, prehistoric caves, bathing pools in crystalline rivers etc. Less than an hour away and you can pick from markets, large towns or an outlet mall for shopping, beaches including the breath-takingly beautiful Cinque Terre, mountains, walking, nature trails, zip-wire activity centres, ice skating and skiing in season. Just so much to do!!!!
Obrigado Kathryn!

  • A vila é linda.

Villa Isotta enjoys the view of the splendid Pizzo d'Uccello mountain (1,781 m) which stands out among the other peaks of the Apuan Alps above all for its North Face, an elevation of almost 800 m in altitude that places the mountain in comparison with the most famous Dolomite or western Alps walls. Another interesting aspect is the proximity of the house to the thermal baths of Equi, a famous spa town in Italy.

Lovingly-restored 6-bedroom villa, comfortable, spacious, and elegantly furnished with antiques and original art, set in tranquil surroundings far removed from the hustle and bustle of more touristy parts of Tuscany. Set in glorious unspoiled countryside of olive groves, chestnut woods, and rushing streams, the villa has breathtaking views of the Carrara mountains. It is within walking distance of a fine country restaurant, and only 45 mins from the Italian Riviera and 50 miles from Lucca.
The views from Casa della Quercia are simply stunning, and the sense of peace and tranquility are rare to find in our modern world. But the villa is not isolated -- it is situated at the edge of an historic village with many ancient footpaths linking it to neighboring villages, and there is an excellent agriturismo within walking distance (Spino Fiorito), with many other fine restaurants and attractions within a 20 minute drive. The furnishings of the villa are unique -- it is filled with original art and family heirlooms, many French and Italian antiques -- creating a beautiful space without being stuffy or formal. Rather, it is a comfortable and friendly backdrop for a holiday focused on relaxation and rejuvenation. In fact, this past summer, the cast of the movie "Mary Queen of Scots" stayed at the villa for two weeks, including Golden-Globe winner Saoirse Ronan and "Dr. Who" star David Tenant, who said they had "the time of their lives." CITRA CODE 045004LTN0008
Reusa is a very special place with a long history -- in fact, there is an ancient Roman road that runs under the top terrace of the villa, and the the Roman guard post is still there. This is part of the ancient pilgrims' way, the Via del Volto Santo, a section of the famous Francigena pilgrims' way that led from Canterbury to Rome; here it makes a detour over the mountains to visit the cathedral in Lucca, and the statue called the Volto Santo. An even more ancient settlement, going back several thousand years, has been discovered in Reusa.

Il Ponte Romano has the twin benefit of being private and peaceful and yet within easy walking distance of the medieval town of Fivizzano, with its cafes, shops, restaurants, post office and several banks. There are often summer concerts in the main piazza, to be enjoyed by young and old. Fivizzano is ideally placed for a wide choice of activities. We organize day trips to Cinque Terre park by boat, or Lucca, Parma and Florence, cooking classes, wine tasting... just ask!
The house is traditionally built, with stone walls and cottoned wood floorings. It's cool during hot summer days and fresh in the nights. The furnishing has been particularly designed and many of the furniture come from the far east experience of the owners, or are part of Tuscany tradition. The large double bedroom with ensuite on ground floor also has a door to a sunny terraced part of the garden, with a shaded pergola and dining table. The first floor is reached by an open stone staircase but, as the house follows the contours of the hillside, can also be reached by an entrance door higher up the hill. On this floor are an eat-in kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom that serves them all. A cosy living is also on this floor. The garden and the private pool overlook the river and the little medieval town of Fivizzano. A easy walk up to the main square (15 minutes, a bit steep) will let you enjoy an aperitivo in one of the bars, or a pizza in the pizzeria. Supermarket, bank, post office, even a hospital... everything is at easy reach.

Our house is a spacious and historic home with a pool in a quiet, friendly village. Pognana sits in the lush green hills of Lunigiana, in northern Tuscany. Untroubled by tourist crowds yet close enough for day trips to Florence, Pisa, Genoa and Parma, the village is under an hour from the sea, Cinque Terre and the Apuane (part of the Apennine) mountains.
Pognana is a small, peaceful village 2 kms from the town of Fivizzano. A quiet group of houses which bursts into life in August of each year when extended family members come back home. Its peaceful atmosphere is punctuated by cries of buzzards, barks of deer, the local tractor, sometimes the sound of the nearby river, sometimes the wind in the trees and sometimes moments of complete, unbroken silence. The neighbours are friendly and happy to meet you. The house is an old stone farmhouse built on a small piazza with commual water source and washing trough. Parts are medieval, the house has grown and changed over the centuries. Evidence that the central wall was once external can be seen from the window openings, and previous rooflines can be read off the walls in the attic. Made of up 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, living room and piano room, all the rooms are spacious. The thick stone walls and tiled floors mean the spaces stay comfortable in the heat of summer. Some of our older neighbours remember going to school in the living room, another learnt her seamstress trade skills working with half a dozen women together in what is now the piano room, and village weddings were celebrated with a meal in the large kitchen. Today the kitchen gives onto a balcony with spiral wrought iron staircase down on to the garden below. An open archway leads from kitchen to living room. Entrance from the piazza doors is via a wide corridor, which opens onto cantinas and garden and pizza oven at the back. A staircase leads up to the house which has a number of different levels, a quiet double room is off the entrance area, more stone steps lead to the kitchen, living room, piano room, a large bedroom and shower/WC. Continuing up the stairs are a further two bedrooms: a double and a twin room and shower/WC. Finally a modern staircase leads to another large double bedroom with bathroom (bath, shower, WC) and onto a private roof terrace which is not overlooked. The views are to the south and west, of Fivizzano, the valley and Alpi Apuane beyond, perfect for a spot of uninterrupted sunbathing or nighttime stargazing. In the garden is a wood burning pizza oven, plenty of room to kick a ball around, or splash in the pool (4m x 8m).
Pognana is located in the Lunigiana; Luni was a Roman settlement. Stone stele leave traces of human settlement since the Bronze Age. More hilly than southern Tuscany the village sits roughly half way between the sea and a ski resort – each roughly 45 mins drive. The seaside resorts of Marinella di Sarzana, Marina di Carrara and Massa are perfect for the beach lover, but busy in the summer. Alternatively Lerici, Ameglia and the tiny beaches of the National Park of Montemarcello-Magra with beautiful villages and quiet beaches. Montemarcello is reached via 700 steps down from the village above – bear it in mind for the return trip. On the other side of the bay of La Spezia, still easily accessible for a day trip lie the famous Gulf of the Poets, Porto Venere and the Cinque Terre. Drive or take the train to Genoa, Pisa, Cremona La Spezia for culture, shopping and fine dining. Going east from Pognana the road winds up over the pass and down again on the other side to Emilia-Romagna. The views are spectacular. Stop at Cerreto the ski resort, and take the ski lift up the hill fro walks, picnics and if you are lucky a view all the way across the Po Valley and to the Alps in the distance. Take the Lagastrello Pass road back for a long, meandering, beautiful drive home. The national parks of (LIST) have walks, refuges to eat at, cycling. For a rest go to Equi Terme with its natural springs. There is a spa and swimming pool, but many locals bypass this and settle down at the river which has been divided by small walls into warmer and cooler pools, help yourself to a mud face mask and bring a picnic. On the other side of these mountains lie Carrara, Massa, Sarzana and the smaller towns like Pietrasanta home to many artists and jewellery makers. Carrara is home to the world famous white marble, has an extraordinary landscape of quarries up above the city. The Romans mined this stone and it is believed they were far from being the first. The town is a vibrant evening destination, particularly in summertime and the Marble Weeks festival offers a view into workshops and galleries.

This beautiful twin/superking room is located on the first floor of this grand country house and has an en-suite shower room with a feature marble fireplace. Offering a rural setting with stunning views, space and clean, fresh air this is a real escape from day-to-day life in an area of Tuscany that is still undiscovered and unspoilt The villa has just undergone major refurbishment after decades of neglect and is once again a family home that we'd like to welcome you to. Breakfast is included
This spacious bedroom has a charming barrel vaulted ceiling which retains some of the original decoration and the en-suite shower room features an original marble fireplace. The bathroom was once part of the study of national hero Carlo Del Prete. This room may be booked to have one superking or two single beds and is an ideal room for single travellers. It also offers a comfortable seating area and wardrobe etc. The windows overlook one of the quiet lanes in the hamlet. All bed and bathroom linens are of superior quality.
The villa enjoys peace, quiet and far reaching views but is also a part of a tiny hamlet so does not feel in anyway isolated. There are no services in the hamlet but a 10 or 12 minute drive down the hill brings you to one of two towns offering all services (shops, bars, cafes, banks, post office, restaurants, police, health-care etc)

There are many undisclosed myths regarding the name of this area. The symbol of this ancient land is a crescent moon (luna in Italian) held in a bear’s claw. The Lunigiana is a land rich in history and things to do: fascinating castles, Romanesque churches, medieval villages and streets, prehistoric stele statues, ancient pathways of the Via Francigena and refined works of art dating from different centuries. It’s a territory to be explored slowly, taking your time to appreciate every single nuance, savouring the local food, such as testaroli, panigacci, chestnut flour, honey, olive oil, wines, cured meats and cheeses.

The house is an old country pile, just renovated to a high standard befitting such a property. This extremely large suite on the 2nd floor boasts an elegant drawing room with the best views of the sunsets, a large bathroom with twin basins and walk-in shower and stunning double-height bedroom with king-size bed. The bedroom is bathed in wonderful light thanks to windows on all 4 sides, amazing views to the Apuane mountains, over the garden and ancient yew tree and a Juliet balcony overlooking the terrace. This is beautiful countryside but with neighbouring properties so it never feels isolated or cut off here. The perfect balance really.

VILLA QUERCIA CITRA CODE: 045004LTN0008 Sleeps 12 Bedrooms 6, Bathrooms 6 Reusa-Casola in Lunigiana - Tuscany, Italy
VILLA QUERCIA CITRA CODE: 045004LTN0008 Sleeps 12 Bedrooms 6, Bathrooms 6 Reusa-Casola in Lunigiana - Tuscany, Italy The region of Lunigiana, in northern Tuscany, is a land of ancient castles, chestnut-wooded hillsides and tumbling rivers, protected by a ring of mountains — the Appenines to the north, and the Apuan Alps to the south. It is a place where timeless country traditions and seasonal farming cycles still govern the pace of life, and the region remains mostly untouched by our modern age. Here you will experience the tranquility and peace of the countryside, with only the sound of church bells to break the silence. Villa Quercia is a three levels listed historic villa dating from the 1500s, but with earlier (Roman) foundations. The villa is spacious and comfortable and was designed as the owners' second homewith renovations and furnishings of the highest quality. The villa has five bedrooms/bathrooms, with an adjacent converted barn adding a sixth bedroom, accommodating up to twelve guests in all. In traditional Tuscan style, the two main floors of the villa are connected by an outdoor staircase, creating two separate living quarters, perfect for two families or groups of friends who wish to share the villa. Smaller groups may rent the villa in May and September as a private two-bedroom villa. The terraced gardens and stone courtyards provide many enchanting areas to enjoy morning breakfast or lunch al aperto, evening cocktails by the pool, or a barbecue under the vine-covered arbor. There are many sunbathing areas and shady nooks for quiet contemplation on the various levels and terraces. The pool is accessed by two flights of steps that wind through the olive grove and terraces planted with lavender and rosemary. Beyond the pool terrace is a meadow and a chestnut wood with a stream running through it, delightful for kids to explore, and old mule paths that lead up to alpine meadows and down to nearby villages for those who are more adventurous. The villa has spectacular views across chestnut-wooded valleys and hillsides to the mountain peaks of the Apuan Alps National Park. It is located 50 miles north of Lucca, and is just a 50 minute drive from the coastal villages and famed seafood restaurants of the Italian Riviera and the Cinque Terre. ACCOMMODATION The villa has six bedrooms and six bathrooms in all, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms on the top floor, three on the two lower floors, and one bedroom/bathroom in an adjacent converted barn. In traditional Tuscan style, the two main floors of the villa are connected by an outdoor staircase, creating two separate living quarters, perfect for families or friends who wish to share the villa. The top floor has a fully-equipped kitchen and separate dining room, while the middle floor has a smaller kitchen and a dining area as part of the living room. The house is furnished with Italian, French and English antiques, original oil paintings, and oriental rugs, including some brought back from a trip to Morocco, and with quality linens and soft furnishings mostly imported from the USA. Smaller groups may rent the property in May and September as a two-bedroom private villa for 2 to 6 people—perfect for small families, honeymooners, or a couple looking for a peaceful and romantic getaway. TOP FLOOR The top floor is very spacious and features a large living room with high beamed ceiling, traditional stone fireplace, dining room, kitchen, and two bedrooms with private bathrooms. LIVING ROOM The spacious living room has seating that includes a sofa (seats 3), 2 armchairs and several occasional chairs and stools to accommodate 10 to 12 people. There is a TV with Sky channels, a DVD player with a large collection of DVD disks, and a small library of books about Italy. DINING ROOM The dining room has a floor of antique terra-cotta tiles salvaged from the old house, and a ceiling custom-built from chestnut beams to match the original. The antique Italian library table seats eight to ten, and a hatch through to the kitchen gives the room a sense of space. KITCHEN The kitchen was built by a local craftsman out of chestnut wood and has a floor of antique terra-cotta tiles. There is a five-burner stove with rotisserie oven, a large fridge with freezer, dishwasher, and espresso maker with a complimentary starter box of coffee. CANTINA The cantina holds several demi-johns of our neighbor's home-made wine and guests are invited to fill up their wine bottles any time they wish at no cost—drink up and enjoy! BEDROOM & BATHROOM Bedroom 1: Two French double beds, 4' 3" x 6' 3" The Zanzibar Suite (14' x 21") features a pair of canopied antique beds carved from rosewood and mahogany and inset with painted glass hearts imported from Zanzibar especially for this room (size: French double.) Two sets of French doors look out over spectacular views of the mountains. The en-suite bathroom has a combination bath tub with shower, sink, and wc, and underfloor heating. Bedroom 2: Two single beds that can make a king The Portovenere Suite (17'x15' including bathroom) is situated in what was a separate cottage now attached to the main house. It has two single beds which can be made up as a queen-sized bed. French windows look out onto the village (northeast) side of the villa. The en-suite bathroom has a shower, sink, and wc. Both bedrooms on the top floor have air conditioning and window screens, and both bathrooms have underfloor heating to warm up the floor tiles in cooler weather. Bedroom 6: King bed size Il Micino is a renovated chestnut drying house situated right next to the main floor of the house. It is a sweet little house with a high, beamed ceiling and consists of a spacious bedroom and en suite bathroom with shower. It has a queen-sized bed with a Tempurpedic mattress, air conditioning, and French doors leading out to the stone courtyard (see photo to the right). Il Micino means "kitten" and is named after our beloved cat Kaki who loved to hang out in this barn before it was renovated.  Middle Floor These two floors of the villa comprise three bedrooms plus a kitchen and living room with dining area. Bedroom 3: King bed (US queen) imported from USA The Venetian Suite (14' x 21') is a beautifully-proportioned room with two French windows affording spectacular views of the mountains. The room is decorated in Italian and French antiques, creating a romantic atmosphere reminiscent of a more elegant period. The pillow-top queen-sized bed was imported from the US, and traditional chestnut flooring guards against the cold-toes syndrome when your feet touch the floor first thing in the morning. A staircase within the bedroom leads down to a vestibule with French doors that open out onto a private terrace with incredible views, and the adjacent luxury bathroom has a Jacuzzi-type bathtub and separate jet-spray shower (bathroom size 8' x 10'). On the other side of these mountains are the historic towns of Carrara and Pietrasanta, where Michelangelo quarried his favoured pure white marble, and where famed sculptor Fernando Botero now resides. In front of the house is a large stone courtyard providing ample space for sunbathing, a patio for breakfast and morning coffee, and dining terrace with covered arbor and barbecue. The swimming pool is located on a terrace further down the hillside, and is accessed by two flights of steps. The pool size is 3.5m x 7m, and pool towels are provided. There is plenty of outdoor lounging furniture around the pool, and also an arbor for shade. The various terraces also provide many private nooks for sunbathing and quiet contemplation. The terraces and pool area are planted with lavender and rosemary, wisteria and jasmine, oleander and bougainvillea. The property continues down the hillside, across the meadow and into the woods beyond to a little stream, should guests wish to go exploring. Deer and wild boar are often seen in this area. Boats leave from both these ports for trips to the picturesque fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, and to Portofino. Locally, there are a multitude of ancient towns and villages to explore, each with their own personality, and often with a country restaurant or bar for a welcome pit-stop. The Mediterranean beaches of the Versilia coast are about an hour away, and provide a typically Italian seaside experience, with beach clubs, sun umbrellas, and beachfront bars and restaurants. Shops & Services Reusa is close to essential services; it is just five minutes from the town of Casola, which has a cafe, restaurant, bank, post office, chemist, and several grocery stores; 17 mins from the picturesque market town of Fivizzano; and 30 minutes from Aulla, with railway station, major shops, cinema, supermarkets (Conad), and the Autostrada to La Spezia/Parma/Genoa/Livorno/Firenze. Shops usually close from about 12:30 or 1:00 to 3:00 or 3:30, but the Conad supermarkets in Aulla are open all day. There is also a small supermarket in Pallerone, about 20 minutes, and new one has recently opened in the center of Fivizzano. Street Markets TUESDAY – Fivizzano (mornings until 12:30 in the Piazza di Medicea) THURSDAY – Sarzana has an all day market, great for clothes stalls, but you have to get there early to get a parking space; there's also an all-day market in Castelnuovo in Garfagnana (about an hour’s drive along the road to Lucca) FRIDAY – La Spezia (all day), a big market, about 50 mins. Away SATURDAY – Aulla (mornings until 12:30, 1/2 hour drive) Worth going to, parking usually no problem, a really fun market where you can buy fresh produce, local cheeses and meat, fish, flowers, clothes, just about everything. Airports From Reusa, it is about one-and-a-quarter to one-and-a-half hours to Pisa airport, depending on the traffic. On Saturdays, the traffic is no problem, but on a week day, allow longer for possible traffic delays. Genoa airport is about the same distance as Pisa, and Florence Airport is about 30 mins. further. Places of Interest Nearby The nearest town is Casola (3 miles), a medieval village with an antico borgo, an ancient town center of narrow cobbled streets and winding stone stairways connecting the different levels. There is a bank and ATM machine, a post office, and a handful of shops, including two green grocers, a restaurant/pizza parlor, and cafe. This cafe also sells interesting edibles, such as local jams and honey, chestnut bread and pasta, and local wine and olive oil. Next door is a delicatessen, owned by the same people. A stroll through Casola is delightful, and you can walk down to the bridge over the river to the other side and ramble along the various footpaths. The museum in Casola is open by appointment. Fivizzano, about 15 to 20 mins. away (depending on how fast you like to drive on mountain roads), is a beautiful Renaissance market town with a large square, the Piazza Medicea, dotted with outdoor cafes centered around a large fountain. This is a good place to go for food shopping; there are three butchers on Via Roma, who will chop, slice, fillet, and de-bone the meat you choose. They also bake daily a delicious local delicacy, torta verde, a kind of spinach tart, which you can take home for a treat. There are also several greengrocers on this same street. Down Via Roma a little further is the Antica Pharmacia, a pharmacy with antique fixtures which is worth a look, and it also sells really nice Italian smelly stuff, soaps etc, which make great gifts. Market day in Fivizzano is Tuesday, when the square fills up with stalls, including a fish stall that sells really fresh fish—the fishmonger will gut, fillet and bone your fish for you, but  you must ask. There's also a fishmonger on Via Roma, next to the newspaper stand. You can usually get English-language newspapers in Fivizzano at the edicola (newsstand) by the main parking lot. Sarzana is a beautiful medieval town about 45 minutes from Reusa. The ancient center is closed to all but local traffic, making it a delightful place to stroll through narrow cobbled streets full of small boutiques, outdoor cafes, and little restaurants tucked down alleyways. Our favorite is a cafe serving homemade (artisanale) ice cream. You can also take a walk along the top of the old town wall and the main gate (see photo) which affords great views of the castle on the hill above and the narrow streets of the town below. Lucca (50 miles) is beautifull city to visit, known world-wide as the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, born there in 1858. You can get to Lucca along the old mountain road through Castelnuovo in Garfagnana, about 1-1/2 to 2 hours—it’s a beautiful drive through the wild landscape of the Garfagnana, though the road is windy and narrow in places. On the way there is an interesting town to visit, Barga, just a few miles off the main road. You can return via the Autostrada, which is further in miles, but takes about the same amount of time. Lucca is the only major Tuscan city center not built on a hilltop, and you can rent bicycles as a fun and relaxing way to tour the town, since most of it is pedestrian-only. Florence is about a 2 hour drive on the motorway, and not really recommended for a day trip, it really requires more time there. It is of particular interest for art lovers and museum goers, but for general sightseeing, visitors will find it is packed with tourists, especially in summer. The Italian Riviera Lerici, Tellaro, Portovenere and the Cinque Terre (Five Lands) are picturesque fishing villages set along the southern-most end of the Italian Riviera, all with great seafood restaurants. You can park at both Lerici (45 mins. away) and Portovenere (50 mins.) and take the boat to the villages of the Cinque Terre. Lerici is an especially attractive town with a beautiful harbor full of colorful boats and edged with palm trees. It has a promenade the length of the town, and the harbor’s entrance is dominated by a magnificent castle. There is a parking lot in Lerici on the hill before you drive down into the town, and from here you can walk down the narrow streets to the shore. The best seafood restaurant in Lerici is Il Pescatore—there is no menu, they will bring you dish after dish of delicious seafood with as much white wine as you can drink. From here you can take a boat to Portovenere and the towns of the Cinque Terre, and as far as Portofino if you wish. Portovenere (Port of Venus) is the gateway to the Cinque Terre, consisting of five tiny fishing villages clinging to the cliffs of the rocky coastline. There’s usually plenty of street-side parking in Portovenere, but weekends in summer are busy, and all the good restaurants will be booked for lunch. You can take a boat from here to the Cinque Terre villages, stopping for lunch at one of them if you like (our favorite is Vernazza); from here there is a cliff path where you can walk to the next village. This boat trip is highly recommended on a sunny day.
