“For a moderate challenge, starting directly from downtown, visitors can test their legs on the Queenstown Hill Loop Track up to the ‘Basket of Dreams’, a favourite lookout spot. The three-hour walk starts and finishes on Belfast Street, and offers views over the Wakatipu basin to Cecil Peak, the Frankton Arm and Queenstown Bay.”

“From the car park, the track descends through native bush with plenty of bird life to Bobs Cove. It has a stunning view over Lake Wakatipu and offers swimming and shore fishing. A historic lime kiln remains from the 1800s, when the Wakatipu Lime Company quarried and processed Bobs Cove limestone. Gum trees here were planted to fuel the kilns. This track connects to the Twelve Mile Delta Track.”

“The walk around Lake Hayes will reward you with beautiful views, especially on a still day, when the lake is like a mirror. Allow 1 1/2 hours for the full loop walk. Then perhaps reward yourself with coffee and cake in Arrowtown.”

“Child friendly walk up to a small hidden lake. Decent hill at the beginning but easy from there - our 5 and 8 year old managed it. You could take a buggy, but would have to navigate the style at the bottom.”

“OK, definitely one of my absolutely favourite local walks. But the first 30 minutes is a solid uphill slog, following by crossing a path built over a water pipe. The track is very safe, but if you don't have a head for heights, the pipe section might be challenging. I'm not great with heights, and manage this ok, because the views from the platform on a clear day are well worth the effort!”

“When you need to sit down and watch the scenery pass you by grab the Earnslaw steamer across the lake to the farm. Explore the steamer and learn about the history of lake and how the old girl made it to the lake. Have a coffee or bite to eat onboard but don't spoil your appetite if you are heading across the lake for dinner”
