Discounts available on stays of 3+ nights during October to February. Simply click on CONTACT HOST below to enquire. Our lovely holiday home, Mary's Cottage, is set in the beautiful North Northumberland countryside just a few miles from the Scottish Borders. In a peaceful village it offers country walks from the door, and combines tranquility and style with warmth and comfort. The perfect romantic, rural retreat at any time of the year.
Our cosy, romantic cottage has been renovated and insulated to a high standard. We've used gentle Farrow & Ball colours, comfy sofas and bed plus beautiful pieces of art by local artists to create a lovely, relaxing environment. The cottage is our own holiday home and as we don't live locally we employ a housekeeper to clean and prepare for our guests. This means you can expect a high standard of cleanliness and professionally laundered bedding and towels. LIVING/DINING ROOM: Comfy sofas to snuggle on, a log burner with fuel supplied and a cosy corner for dining. There's a wide range of books and DVDs (including some about the history of the local area), Country Living and Dog Friendly magazines, games and colouring books with coloured pens/pencils for time spent relaxing indoors. KITCHEN: Well equipped and modern, the kitchen contains a large fridge-freezer, a wine fridge, dishwasher, single oven with induction hob* and a microwave. Complimentary tea, coffee, sugar, sweetener, herb teas and a basic range of herbs, spices and cooking oil are supplied. (*Please note that the British Heart Foundation recommends that people with a heart pacemaker should get no closer than 60cm to an induction hob). UTILITY ROOM: The utility room houses a washing machine (washing capsules supplied) and separate tumble dryer, iron and table-top ironing board plus room for coats, boots/shoes and doggy paraphernalia (bowls for food and water, poo bags, tick remover and shampoo). A fire blanket, fire extinguisher, basic first aid kit, insect repellent, sunscreen lotion and torches are also kept in here. BEDROOM: Comfortable double bed with Egyptian cotton bedding, plenty of hanging/drawer space for clothes and remote controlled bedside lights. SHOWER ROOM: Modern shower/wet room with underfloor heating and a heated towel rail. We provide fluffy towels and quality toiletries including shampoo and conditioner, body wash and body lotion. TECHNOLOGY: Free wi-fi. Television with DVD player and eclectic mix of DVDs. Chromecast: enables you to 'cast' your favourite TV shows, films, music, sport, games and more from your phone or other mobile devices straight to our TV. Hepburn radio which enables you to play music etc from your mobile/tablet via Bluetooth by simply downloading the View Quest app. OUTSIDE: At the back of the house is a sunny south-facing area for sitting out, with table and chairs provided. The stone bench outside the front door is the perfect spot to sit on a summer's evening with a glass of wine to watch the sun setting. The side/rear area is gated and secure for dogs. Guests have access to a lockable outbuilding enabling secure storage of fishing rods, bikes etc. We have left our own bikes and cycling helmets in the outbuilding and guests are welcome to use them AT THEIR OWN RISK. We've also left folding chairs, a windbreak and a coolbox for picnics and days out at Northumberland's coast. The house is situated on a quiet road just a short walk from the centre of the village of Branxton with its charming village hall, beautiful 12th century church, the 'smallest visitors' centre in the world' and a way-marked walking route around the historic Flodden battlefield. The village, with just 60 dwellings and no shops or pubs of its own, is surrounded by farmland making it wonderfully free from traffic noise and unusually peaceful, especially in the evening. FACILITIES FOR BABIES: A high chair is available upon request. DOGS: Two small or one medium sized well-behaved dogs are welcome but, for the sake of our other guests we'd appreciate it if you would try to keep them out of the bedroom and off the furniture. We provide dog towels, bowls, torches for late night wee-walks and a supply of emergency poo bags. There's also a handy outside tap for cleaning up boots and paws after muddy walks. Please mention if you are bringing your dog at the time of booking so we can leave them some treats. PARKING: Parking on the quiet road right outside the cottage is free and unlimited. The area behind the property is our neighbour's access route to/from his garage so must be left clear at all times.
The peaceful village of Branxton is perfectly positioned for exploring the Northumberland National park, walking in the Cheviot Hills, fishing on the Tweed, or visiting Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and the Farnes. It is just a few miles from the border with Scotland and roughly equidistant from the lovely market town of Kelso with its Flemish-style square and coastal Berwick-upon-Tweed. The cottage is also a perfect base for trips to explore the wonderful cities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh as they are both just over an hour's drive away. The village itself is rich in history being adjacent to site of the Battle of Flodden, fought in 1513. The battlefield trail, with interpretation boards explaining the stages of the battle which led to the tragic death of James IV of Scotland, provides a fascinating walk around the area with beautiful views over the village and across the countryside. There are many other lovely walks to be taken direct from the cottage or just a short drive away and OS maps of the area are provided for guests' use. We also provide a selection of books and DVDs about the history of the area, the Battle of Flodden and the Border Reivers who raided the entire Border country along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the 17th century.

Our spacious and comfortable Victorian home has 2 sitting rooms, 10 seat dining room, 4 bedrooms (king, double, twin and single), 2 showers, 1 bath, 2 WCs and a fitted kitchen with breakfast table, all in Spittal's tranquil and pretty Conservation Area and one minute's walk from the beach. We are a few yards from the Spa Well and there's a public garden beside the house: there is parking for one car, and street parking otherwise. Regular buses to Berwick stop just outside the house too.
This is a spacious family home, well decorated and maintained. Most rooms have corniced ceilings and pine wooden floorboards. The house is fully double-glazed and cosy in the winter and cool in the summer. It can accommodate two sets of parents and children in comfort, and has enough space for privacy even when it's full of guests. The kitchen has a large "American" fridge, and a second under-the-counter beer fridge, two electric ovens and a four-ring gas hob. There's a large ceramic sink and a dishwasher for clearing up the mess afterwards. There is a door at the back of kitchen to the Utility/Drying Room, which has not yet been renovated, but is very warm with the boiler, washing machine and tumble dryer. Also, there's a very useful pulley for drying wet clothes and washing. Coming into the hallway, the next doors are to a downstairs shower room, handy for larger groups, or seriously dishevelled children. The TV Room is our main living room - there's a Smart TV with internet access to Netflix, Amazon, BBC iPlayer, ITV, 4OD etc. whose sound plays through a JBL soundbar. You can hook phones or laptops up to the soundbar via Bluetooth for decent sound reproduction for your music too. Past the small loo is the staircase and then the dining room, which will seat ten people at a large oak table. This room has also been used as a child's bedroom - hence the unusual wall decorations ... The front room is very comfortable, with two soft and large sofas, as well as a nice rocking horse for the kids - please make sure they're supervised when they use it. It also has a very good hi-fi system, with a bluetooth adaptor for playing your own music. Upstairs there are four large, airy bedrooms - the king-size one is the best: bright and beautiful - make sure you claim it first! To its left is the other double room - a sizeable room too, just not so big. The two other bedrooms look over the public garden. The twin room is definitely the most colourful in the house, and the small fourth bedroom is very comfortable for one person, and has a TV too. We have blinds on all windows when pulling up or down hold on until you feel it catch or the blind will shoot right up! We do have a hook pole to bring them back down usually found in the grey bedroom. The windows also have safety catches and/or locks which if opened must be supervised if children are in the room. The house is in a pretty part of Spittal's Conservation Area, one of the older of the houses built for Georgian and Victorian holidaymakers who came to swim and take the waters from the Spa Well. Spittal itself has a wonderful beach, which kids and dogs adore. The village is very dog-friendly: dogs and owners are made very welcome - one family nearby leaves out a water bowl for doggy passers-by. Also on the beach is the Italian Pavilion, which sells ice-cream, candy floss and hot and cold food and drinks. Some mention should also be made of the bakery at the local shop - people come far and wide for their produce, particularly the pies: go in the morning because they are usually sold out by lunchtime. Spittal is near the historic town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, and within sight and sound of the sea and a magnificent 2km long beach which has seals, dolphins and even the occasional otter. Next door is Tweedmouth, where most of the big supermarkets are, and also the Swan Centre, which has swimming and other leisure facilities. Spittal is on National Cycle Route 1 and the Coast and Castles South route. The house is in a great location for exploring the Northumberland coast (by foot, bike or car) and its amazing castles and hinterland. It also is less than an hour away from the city centres of Edinburgh and Newcastle by train. The house is close to the superb golf course at Goswick, as well as the Magdalen Fields golf course on the clifftops in Berwick and lastly to the Tweed itself. Fishing gear is available if pre-booked. Some more information is available at flodden.house on the internet.
Spittal is a pretty little coastal town sitting where the mouth of the River Tweed joins the North Sea. It's a fine location for a holiday by the sea (as painted by L.S. Lowry), and has been a popular destination for generations with one of the finest beaches in Northumberland, and, next to the house, a Spa Well whose water people have been drinking for centuries (personally I'd boil it first). Spittal has a wonderful family friendly beach with sand for sandcastles, an excellent play-park and an exciting splash-park area as well as amusements, toilet and café facilities in the Venetian pavilion of 1928. Dolphins, seals and otters can be seen all year round. To find out more about the dolphins, join the Berwick Dolphin Watch group on Face book. Every year there is are Seaside Festivals with fairground rides, food and other entertainment, perfect to tie into your holiday. You can see Lindisfarne and Bamburgh castles from the beach, and on a clear day you can just make out the Longstone Lighthouse, where Grace Darling became renowned (it's much easier to spot at night). Nearby Tweedmouth has the Swan Center which offers family swimming and a range of sporting and exercise facilities. There are several supermarkets and large shops, for food, clothing, pet supplies etc. On the south side of Tweedmouth there is a large outdoor activities retailer - GoOutdoors - for those forgotten waterproofs! Spittal has long been known as a holiday resort, since the 18th century when visitors were keen to bathe in the sea here and drink from the nearby well. The promenade is very popular for strolling by the sea, taking in the fresh North Sea air and the beautiful views across the sea, of Berwick and its photogenic lighthouse (good for dolphin spotting). In the other direction the beach leads to the Northumberland Coastal Path heading south to Holy Island and onto The Sandstone Way – a new long distance mountain bike route from Berwick to Hexham. Just over the Tweed sits the historic and fascinating coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed: it's a half-hour walk from the house along the sea and riverside then across the magnificent old bridge (it's also a short drive, but you must cross the newer Royal Tweed bridge). Enjoy the individual shops, cafés and amenities and walks around the Elizabethan fortifications, the parks, old castle ruins, Berwick Barracks and museum.

Originally built as a Quaker meeting house in 1749, the interior has been skillfully designed to create a pure, pared-back style which is the epitome of understated elegance. Using a colour scheme of gentle whites and tranquil neutrals, there is a sense of flow and harmony throughout this apartment which will quickly ease you into a holiday mindset. Sitting just off the A1, the Apartment is perfectly located for short breaks or longer stays throughout any season and provides an excellent base to explore the wider Northumberland and Borders area. With the main East Coast Rail Line running through Berwick it is also an ideal car-free destination served by good local services. Sitting just a five minute walk from the town centre, the property benefits from excellent amenities right on the doorstep. In one direction, you will find a selection of characterful shops on Castlegate including a book shop, an antique centre, a deli and a fantastic vintage shop, as well as ‘Pier Red’ where you can sip a rich espresso whilst browsing art works and collectibles by popular Northern artists. Also look out for their regular jazz evenings where you can unwind to the smooth, mellow sounds of talented local musicians. A walk in the other direction will take you to Marygate, the town’s main street where you will find a mix of high street names along with local traders. Other small independent names and quirky shops can be found around the cobbled lanes and closes of the historic old quarter, as well as Hide Hill shops and cafes for a coffee and cake stop. There is a good Antique Centre and gift/interior shops on Bridge Street including one or two great eating spots - Audela for incredible cakes and Gasparo for hearty Italian fayre. Two large supermarkets including a Marks & Spencers food outlet sit on the edge of town. The area has a rich food heritage and there is something to cater for all tastes and budgets here from tasty fish and chips on the promenade to cosy pubs, characterful cafes or bistro restaurants such as The Maltings Kitchen serving tempting light-bites or a pre-theatre dinner. Alternatively, why not pop the wine in the fridge and arrange for a platter of seafood to be delivered straight to your door by the Berwick Shellfish Company - oysters reared in the clear North Sea beds of Lindisfarne, lightly smoked kippers from traditional local smokehouses, or perhaps some freshly dressed lobster or langoustines - perfect for a romantic evening-in! With its rich history, charming Georgian architecture, vibrant cultural and arts scene, golden beaches, superb wildlife, extensive leisure opportunities, as well as links to long distance walking and cycling routes, the whole area is quite simply packed with interest. Walk the outstanding Elizabethan walls of the Old Town taking-in ancient bastions, watchtowers and gun batteries - testament to Berwick’s turbulent past defending England from the Scots. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the coast and Tweed estuary before a visit to the Hawksmoor-designed Berwick Barracks with three separate museums showcasing its military history, as well as part of Sir William Burrell’s art collection. Next follow Berwick’s Lowry Trail and discover the cobbled streets and seaside scenes depicted in the paintings of the great ‘matchstick men’ painter who was captivated by the town and the area. If that sparks your creative side, why not spend an afternoon out-and-about drawing and painting under the tuition of a renowned local artist. Berwick has a thriving arts scene at the centre of which is the charming Maltings Theatre which hosts a packed diary of theatre, cinema, dance, comedy and music. There are also a number of galleries in the town, including the Watchtower which hosts a diverse number of events, guest artists and musicians. For something a bit different, take a boat trip from Berwick upstream to Paxton House, a superb Adam mansion which is home to the largest private gallery of any country home in Scotland with an extensive collection of paintings dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many of which have been loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland. The town hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Riding of the Bounds in May which follows the ancient tradition of riding the town’s boundaries to guard against thieving Reivers; the Seaside Festival in August which includes street entertainers, Punch and Judy, live music, and sandcastle competitions; the Food and Beer Festival in September which is a mouthwatering opportunity to sample all the region’s superb produce; and the Film and Media Arts Festival, the largest of its type in the region. The area has over 26 miles of fantastic beaches just made for lazy picnics and outdoor adventures. Spittal beach is popular with families with wide golden sands, an attractive promenade and fun splash park, while Cocklawburn, Goswick and Cheswick beaches all sit close by. The stunning beach at Bamburgh is a also a must-visit, sitting just a short 20 minute drive from Berwick. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is about a 20 minute drive from Berwick, only accessible by a causeway at low tide. A designated National Nature Reserve, this tiny, picturesque island is often described as ‘The Jewel of the Northumberland Coast’. It is an overwhelmingly mystical place, home to the evocative remains of a ruined eleventh-century priory, a beautifully restored castle and the infamous Lindisfarne Mead. There is excellent bird watching on the Tweed estuary around the town and also further afield at St Abb’s Head and the Farne Islands - home to a resident colony of grey seals in addition to an impressive array of birdlife including puffins, guillemots, razorbills and terns. There are two golf courses close by; Magdalene Fields five minutes from the town offers superb views of the famous Elizabethan walls, the cliffs leading into Scotland and the iconic castles at Bamburgh and Holy Island. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles south of Berwick, Goswick is a highly-regarded links course selected as an Open qualifying course. For a city day out, Berwick Station is about a 10 minute walk from the apartment offering an easy day trip to the magnificent sights of Edinburgh, just 45 minutes journey by train.

This is a small but friendly village, 5 miles from Kelso & 3mls from Coldstream. Berwick can be reached by bus every two hours.

Bridge Street contains a vibrant selection of independent shops, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs. Parking is located in the Bridge Street car park (100m, 2 hours max, free) and the Quayside (400m, 24 hours, free). To the rear of the flat is the multi-award winning The Curfew Micropub and its sheltered courtyard. The Curfew is also owned and run by us. Access to the flat is down a short shared, covered alley with The Curfew. The Curfew was opened in June 2014 and has won multiple awards from CAMRA since then, including Overall Pub of the Year in Northumberland and Overall Cider Pub of the Year in Northumberland. The pub has no tv, music or any kind of amplified sound. When the courtyard is busy, there is an audible buzz of conversation and laughter. We do not, however, tolerate rowdy behaviour in the pub. In addition to a rotating line-up of 4 casks ales sourced from UK micros, 2 craft keg lines, 4 still ciders, the best-stocked craft beer fridge in the town and a small selection of fine wines (plus soft drinks), The Curfew also has a selection of traditional bar snacks including haggis scotch eggs, pork & game pies from the renowned Foremans Butchers of Norham, pork scratchings etc. Pub opening times are 12.00 to 21.00 Monday to Thursday and 12.00 – 22.00 at weekends. Staff ensure that everyone is off premises by 21.45/22.45. The Curfew also hosts a number of beer festivals each year including the Spring Beer Festival (1st bank holiday weekend in May), Oktoberfest (October….) and a Winter Beer Festival (January or February). The pub storeroom, where casks and other supplies are kept, is located underneath the rear bedroom in the flat. Access to the flat is separate and secure.
Where do I start! Bridge Street is the place to be! Literally a stones throw from the Lowry trail, the old Jacobean bridge and the Quayside, its perfectly placed. On the doorstep is one of our favourite cafes in the area, The Mule on Rouge. It specialises in filled bagels, excellent coffee which is locally roasted and has a collection of Vinyl to browse through. Almost right next door to the property is another of our favourite haunts, Gasparro's. Italian food done really well, a small menu using local and fresh ingredients and with pizzas to die for! Its a cosy little place with limited seating and only one sitting per evening so make sure you book in advance for this one! There are so many more I could mention...The Barrels Ale House, Audela, The Queens Head & Foxtons to name a few.

Stunning secret cottage located just steps from Berwick's most vibrant street. Bridge Street is home to 3 pubs, 3 cafés and numerous restaurants. Next to the two-storey smithy (a former artists studio) , you'll find hidden steps opening up to a large garden complete with free-range chickens. The Smithy is an oasis of peace nestled in the centre of the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Dogs are welcome to stay; the chickens are kept in a separate space so that curious canines aren't tempted :)
The smithy is a warm open-plan space with a semi-industrial feel. Guests have the entire space to themselves, full central heating, kitchen, double oven and luxury bathroom.
There's a vegan cafe directly opposite the front door. It's a 15-minute walk to the beach, a 5-minute walk to the river and a few steps from Berwick's trendiest street which has plenty of live music, art galleries, restaurants, a charcuterie and organic/vegan shops. Further afield, Holy Island, Alnwick Castle (the venue used for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh Castle are definitely worth a visit.
