Our favourite restaurant, with seasonal menus and home-grown and locally-sourced foods. It has a Michelin star but remains completely unpompous and welcoming! A beautiful place to eat in, with lovely views across the fields. You will need to book in advance and can do so easily via their website, as well as by calling them. The Woodspeen is within walking distance, but is also just a 5 min drive away. Bookings: 01635 265070 https://www.thewoodspeen.com/dining/

City/town information

Newbury is our closest town. It began as a Saxon settlement, witnessed two battles in 1643 and 1644, and housed the American 101st Airborne Division at Greenham Common during the Second World War and throughout the Cold War. Nowadays, it’s well known for its racecourse – proud home to the Hennessy Gold Cup – and its location on the idyllic Kennet canal. This historic market town and hosts a wide variety of shops - from high street brands to independent stores. For convenience we prefer to use the parking at the Parkway Shopping Centre which has direct access to M&S and an outdoor shopping area including H&M, Lakeland, Hotel Chocolat, Paul… There is a Farmer's market on the first Sunday of each month selling great local produce.

Hungerford, famous for its antique shops, is just 8 miles away. It's easy to spend hours looking for treasures among the variety of shops and arcades. There are also some lovely independent shops, including the Hungerford Bookshop. Hungerford also has an annual Food Festival with food stalls, street food, live cooking demonstrations, a cook-off, pumpkin challenge, apple identification quiz and lots more. Tutti Day, once a nationwide affair, takes place on every second Tuesday after Easter. Hungerford residents are the only people in Britain still to don their costumes as part of the Hocktide celebrations. The Tuttimen follow the Orange Man to each residence in the town, climbing their ladders to present the ladies of each house with an orange, in return for a kiss. Gentlemen then offer up their penny to the Tuttimen as ‘rent’. The town is also home to the July Hungerford and District Community Arts Festival (HADCAF) where local talents are showcased for an enraptured audience and a pre-Christmas must, the Victorian Extravaganza.

One of the UK's most successful regional producing theatres is located just a mile from our gate! It is an intimate 220 seat auditorium in a converted corn mill. Booking in advance is essential. The Watermill also offers 2-course pre-show meals. There is also a bar, and during the summer, you can enjoy drinks and afternoon tea by the river. From the Watermill website: "In the early 1960s David Gollins, with the support of his mother Judy Gollins, had the vision and the foresight to create one of the smallest and most beautiful professional theatres in the country from the derelict watermill. The existence of a mill at Bagnor is recorded in the Domesday Book and the building itself dates from 1830, being used as a corn mill, a fullers mill and a fine paper mill before it was converted for the first professional theatre season in 1967." https://www.watermill.org.uk

Explore our local ruins - the striking Donnington Castle on top of a hill provides stunning views all around. It's easy to walk there, but there is a small car park if you prefer to drive instead. The striking twin-towered gatehouse of 14th century Donnington Castle, near Newbury, survives within impressive earthworks. It shows the luxury enjoyed by Sir Richard Abberbury, Donnington’s builder, whose private quarters lay within it. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are thought to have stayed here. The large defences built to protect the castle during the English Civil War still survive.

The Common was used by the RAF and United States Army Air Forces during WWII and the US Air Force during the Cold War, also as a base for nuclear weapons. After the Cold War ended, it was closed in September 1992. The airfield was also known for the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp held outside its gates in the 1980s in protest against the stationing of cruise missiles on the base. It has since been designated as public parkland, effectively returning it to its pre-WW2 status. Greenham and Crookham Commons became a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Cold War era control tower has recently been redeveloped and is now open as a visitor centre with a historical exhibition and community cafe.

Beacon Hill is near the village of Burghclere and Watership Down. The hill's name is derived from the fact that it was one of many Beacon Hills in England and beyond. It is reached up a steep slope, reaching 261 metres high and has one of England's most well known hill forts on its slopes. The views from the top are superb, and you can get a clear view of Highclere Castle and the surrounding estate. The climb and circular walk around the old hill fort take around 30-40 minutes in total.
