The Lincoln memorial is the beautiful and impressive site of so many important civil rights events, not least of which Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington. It's especially beautiful at night, however, and with significantly fewer people!

There’s a station at the Ice Area, less than a mile from the house, and you can bike across the river, or rent one at any of the 440 stations around DC. capitalbikeshare.com.
Also, public skating sessions on the weekends in the winter. It’s about a 15 minute walk from the house. Adults $5, kids & seniors $4, skate rental $3.
