The local Lenape tribes from whom they purchased the swath of land guided them to build in this spot, just on the east side of the Wallkill River. If you are interested in early American history, don't miss having a tour of these houses.

Not only does the Preserve have the cliffs ("The Gunks") world famous among climbers, but it also consists of huge swaths of conserved land. Starting at the Gateway (which is in itself worth visiting), just west of New Paltz, the trails go all the way up the mountain, connecting to the those at Mohonk Mountain House and Minnewaska State Park.
