City/town information

Our local town of Saint Johnsbury full of history from the Victorian era. It was fortunate to be the homeplace of the Fairbanks family who were an active part of the Industrial boom in this country. They were best known and for the Fairbanks Scale, the first platform scale manufactured in the US. The Fairbanks family left their mark on the town with the building of outstanding public institutions as well as beautiful private homes. The Fairbanks museum, the Saint Johnsbury Atheneaum (our library) and several of the buildings associated with the Saint Johnsbury Academy are from this era. Saint Johnsbury has two 'main streets' with shops and restaurants and in the Cabin is a notebook with various flyers, walking maps and ideas for places to visit and eat. In our downtown we have a good bakery called Boule, Whirligig Brewery, The Kingdom Table and Taproom, Saint Jay Distillery, a couple coffee shops and a fun bookstore with a candy shop inside! You'll find places to shop and browse as well! Saint Johnsbury is also the beginning of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail with a place you can park for biking and walking access on this extensive trail system. There is more to explore in our area and we've put together a binder with brochures and maps for you to have at the Cabin so you can plan your adventures while you're here!

Food scene

Nice microbrew, the brewer is experimenting with local hops and barley. The barley is grown on the farm across the valley that you can see from the property, the Gingue Family Farm!

Wow! Amazing rum, gin and vodka! Beautifully restored building with history from the Prohibition era and its end. The proprietor loves to talk about his passion in distilling and gives a great tasting experience!

Shopping and dining

Our next closest town, 14 miles away and it is one of those small towns that has been able to combine both the usual 'big box stores' as well as keep a very vibrant and active downtown! So, this is the closest Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, TJ Maxx but, more fun is the downtown area where you will find wonderful shopping and eating opportunities!
