Beaches

Hire a paddle board, take a guided kayak tour, surf or sit back with an ice cream (or a G&T on the balcony) and watch the kids in the rock pools and the lifeboat launch from the slipway below. Swimming best at mid or low tide.

Not for the faint hearted to find, please go on foot to avoid littering the narrow and steep track with vehicles. It’s a lovely walk up and over Wheal Kitty with a barbecue to catch the last light (or pick up lunch at Canteen on your way). The beach is more pebbly and the foreshore rockier than Trevaunance, so not advised for a swim especially if there are any waves at all. No lifeguard.

This is our favourite beach. The car park is small so we recommend walking the 35-40 minutes from the house (consider going over the beacon for views of St Ives on your way, or taking the coast path from Trevaunance for world class sights). In season there is an overflow car park at the top of the long steep hill, as an alternative. The sand here moves all the time so at high and mid tides, depending on recent storms, you may find either beach or rock pools and flowing water. But at low tide you will always find a huge expanse of golden sand with caves to explore and world class views of cliffs and sunsets while you surf or swim.

Views

The Beacon shelters the village from the atlantic wind and storms and shelters the Giant Bolster in his bloody cave. It is a sublime, if windy, place to watch the sun rise or set.

Hard to believe that this breathtaking place was once an industrial landscape covered with mining works, a WWII gun emplacement and training camp and even a housing estate. Now there is a lookout station which sees mostly sealife and birds, several free car parks and stunning cliff top views wrapping all around. Part of the walk from Trevaunance to Chapel Porth via Wheal Coates. We bring a ‘Wheal Busy’ from St Agnes Pizza Co for a sunset on the cliff - or we used to before the kids came along!

There is a reason why this place is so often used on adverts, TV shows, signs, brands and websites about Cornwall. We’ve even seen it on ‘places to see before you die’ lists. Its not subtle! It’s quite the scene if you catch it out of season with the sun low in the sky and the salt rising over the cliffs… We like to explore and play make believe with kids but it’s not a playground, there are lots of dangerous drops and falling rocks.
