The best view and the best home cooking in Lisbon can be enjoyed at Ristorante Ponto Final. Take the 10-minute ferry ride across the Tagus from Cais de Sodre to Cacilhas then swing right, past the fishermen, towards the ocean. The catch of the day, served with Alentejo bread and wine for €15 is a delight, especially if you get there early and grab a table outside.

Great Vegetarian The Food Temple is a small, hard-to-find vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the gorgeous medieval Mouraria neighbourhood. It serves delicious, good-value tapas-style meals and the (creative) menu changes frequently. The plates are around €4 and there are also delicious desserts. More than the food here though, the atmosphere of the place is wonderful. You can sit at a table or on outdoor steps where people mill around and order food and eat alfresco (they double as seating for live music events). The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic.

Unless you are a geography buff, São Tomé e Príncipe might not ring a bell. To the Portuguese, though, these words mean coffee and cocoa of supreme quality. Bettina & Nicola Corallo, an austere coffee shop in the hip Príncipe Real district, maintains a direct line to their producers down in the islands. Roasted in-house, their coffee is a rare chance to taste the small-batch product of São Tomé, and the chocolate sorbet puts to shame any gelato in town. Take one of each and enjoy them on a bench under the centenarian cedar tree in the park across the street. By the best chocolat in town Rua da Escola Politécnica 4, Príncipe Real | +351 21 386 2158

Built in 1553, the Church of São Roque (St. Roch) is one of Lisbon's most magnificent monuments, due to its historical significance and artistic richness. A plain façade hides a rich interior, including the exuberant Chapel of St. John the Baptist, considered "the world's most expensive chapel." Built in Rome between 1742 and 1747, using the most precious materials, it was transported to Lisbon on three ships.
