Around the Neighborhood

Our Neighborhood
Local sights, rustic sounds & rich flavors! If you want to experience the LOCAL side of Makati, then our laid-back and delightfully down-to-earth neighborhood is the right place to start. Tucked between Guijo Street and Sacred Heart Street, our location is a big BONUS because we are on a safe & peaceful semi-residential area that is situated at the more accessible part of San Antonio Village, home to the Sacred Heart National Shrine (a popular Catholic Church) and the Makati YMCA. Our UNIQUE neighborhood is easily accessible from the main public roads and shopping malls and YET it is a hidden gem, a slow-paced refuge from the hustle and bustle of nearby Buendia and Ayala Avenue. Sacred Heart Street has small eating places such as Galli Spanish restaurant, Purple Oven & Bebe Rouge Patisserie. Next to YMCA is a beauty salon that also offers massage services. Across is a BPI ATM machine inside the church compound. BDO bank is few meters down the same street. Guijo Street is fast becoming popular, thanks to Guijo Suites (a small but busy hotel) plus the trendy 12/10 Japanese Izakaya (tiny but upscale food venue/ top ten in Makati) located 2 minutes walk from us. Around the corner is Solace Hotel with a bar/coffee shop called Nipa Brew (they make their own tasty beers!) and Satinka Naturals offering vegetarian meals. Just a few meters further after you make a right, are fastfood places like Chowking, Kentucky, McDonalds & Shakeys (the latter 3 are open 24/7). On the opposite end of our street is Bagtikan Street where you can find a Filipino restaurant Mang Rudy's. Across it is ARKIPELAGO- a large complex of various types of eateries with nightly Live band performances. Further ahead is Dalat, a Vietnamese eatery. Nearest to us on the same street is SaGuijo, a decades-old & still very popular venue for alternative LIVE bands that perform few days a week. There are times when the music manages to escape their airconditioned closed-in band area, but so far, none of our guests found the escaping noise bothersome . Young groupies love to linger outside the bar but this gated village remains to be one of the safer spots in Makati. Most buildings here, including ours, have its own security personnel 24/7. Two large supermarkets Shopwise and Rustan's are both within 10-15 minute walking distance from our building. A low-end (no aircon) Fitness Gymn is 7 minute walk away. Ask your host about the best deals in Laundry service as there are too many laundry shops in the area. Our peaceful residential neighborhood is gradually evolving into a gentrified semi-commercial area, with many young entrepreneurs converting older residential bungalows into trendy cafes and boutique inns. Fortunately, it has not yet lost its rustic charm and slow pace. Here is where you can still find vendors selling fresh fruit or sticky rice sweets from wooden push carts. The biggest push-carts belong to the coconut vendors who will gladly break open a coconut for you. Have a taste of local delicacies such as "balot" or taho". These local vendors do their daily rounds all day, passing our street frequently, even past midnight. More street favorites: Hot Bibinka and Puto Bumbong vendors make their delicious Christmas goodies from scratch (while you wait) right in front of Sacred Heart Church during the Simbang Gabi season (Christmas midnight Mass).
Comfort food at affordable prices with nightly Live Bands, mostly Acoustic performances. From rice meals to burgers, shawarma, and finger food that pairs well with your beer. A variety of Filipino favorites, Korean hotpot, Japanese sushi and ramen bar, Thai dishes and many others. Best of all, it's a 3 minute walk away. The downside is... too hot during the day because it's an open-air food complex.

Owned by a young Vietnamese family who run another Vietnamese eating place somewhere in Makati where they offer PHO dishes (Vietnamese noodle soup). Unfortunately, they do not offer it here. We recommend the Vietnamese coffee and NEM (deep fried spring rolls). The fresh spring rolls would have been better but they do not offer this option and in fact they only have few items in their menu. They also sell snacks such as freeze dried jackfruit which is worth a try!

A Japanese fusion Izakaya that has become very popular in Makati. Even those who do not live or work in Makati would go all the way to Guijo Street just to sample 12/10's delectable appetizers and flavorful main courses. Candle-lit ambiance and a cozy atmosphere. May get fully booked quickly in the weekends. Expect to spend around P2000 per person if you want to eat well and drink well at this place.

Well-known for their cakes and pastries such as lemon bars, mango bars, brownies - all sold per box. Sold per piece are croissants, tuna turnovers, mini pies and cakes. They also serve brewed coffee in the morning. Best of all, they bake the goodies right at their shop and it's highly recommended to get them when they are freshly baked, just off the oven. Check out their blackboard where they list down the different times of the day they bake the various pastries. Open from 7 am to 9 pm. Located next to them are 2 long-time franchised stall brands: Potato Corner (french fries in different flavors; favorite of every kid I know!) ---- and ---- Burger Machine (cheap burgers at around P45 to P60 and you get two burgers for the price of one! )

They have their own signature craft beers and soda drinks that come in small or medium servings. They also sell Belgian beers and other international varieties. They serve pizza, pasta, chips and french fries. Pleasant surroundings and relatively new compared to other places in the area. When it's too hot and humid to work at home, I take my laptop to this quiet decent bar with full blast (new) aircon. It rarely gets busy here, they close around 11 PM and they have good wifi.

All-day breakfast, panini and pasta dishes under P140. It's an old bungalow-type home converted to a humble coffee shop. Despite the "run-down look" of the cafe, it has become a favorite evening hang-out of young people in the neighborhood. You may not find a vacant table during the late evenings when it gets busy but never gets noisy. They close at midnight and on Sundays.

Known for their crispy and tasty BAGNET (fried pork cutlets) and other dishes under P150. Aside from the generous serving size, the best thing about their Bagnet dishes is the perfect pairing with different vegetable sidings such as Pakbet, Kangkong, Kare Kare. Another hole-in-the-wall favorite that has that "run-down look" and badly needs interior renovations, if not a fresh coating of paint.

Authentic Japanese eating place specializing in crispy tonkatsu with heaps of shredded cabbage on the side. They also serve genuine ramen and other Japanese favorites. It's a hole-in-the-wall type of place but the Japanese owner makes sure it's clean and cozy. A bit pricey compared to most of the restaurants in this list, but not as expensive as 12/10 Izakaya.

SaGuijo has become a well-established "Live Music Institution" since the '90s. Many bands who are now famous had started performing publicly at SaGuijo decades ago. Locals who enjoy alternative or original music performed LIVE by their favorite bands come to SaGuijo. The live jamming start from Thursdays through Saturday evenings. When the bands performing are not that famous, they charge only P200 at the door and you get one free local beer. When the bands are FAMOUS, expect crowds of groupies spilling unto Guijo Street from 10 PM until 2 AM. Check out their schedule on their Facebook Page. SaGuijo is a few steps away from our door!
