Sightseeing
A favorite local hangout for generations, this swimming hole is part of the San Gabriel River hiking trail system. Blue Hole is a scenic lagoon on the South San Gabriel River. The entrance to Blue Hole Park is located at Second Street and Rock Street, one block west of N. Austin Avenue. This scenic park lined by limestone bluffs is a good wading spot to cool down a little bit in the summer! Blue Hole Park is open from 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. Free public parking is available at the corner of 3rd Street and Rock Street in the parking lot or the parking garage. Wear your water shoes, the surface is mostly limestone rocks. The water level gets low when we have been without rain for any significant amount of time.

Along the banks of the San Gabriel River where the two forks meet, between the river and Austin Avenue, you’ll find one of the most beautiful parks in the state of Texas.
San Gabriel Park was designated a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation & Parks Society in March 2012. San Gabriel Park is one of only nine parks in Texas to be awarded this designation in its inaugural year. These parks were chosen for their historical prominence within their communities and the state by providing natural respite and social interaction as those communities were founded, developed, and prospered.
San Gabriel Park is graced with 200-year-old oak trees that offer shady spots for family picnics. The 180-acre park also provides space for concerts and festivals, as well as fields for soccer, football, lacrosse and baseball.
A hike and bike trail goes through the park, including a 1.6-mile loop in the park and other segments that connect to Blue Hole Park, Rivery Park, Chautauqua Park and all the way to Lake Georgetown. For kids who might find this scary they sell little miner hats with headlamps. An unforgettable experience!

The best time to view them is30 to 60 minutes prior to Sunset in August, off the Congress Avenue Street Bridge. Bat Fest has become one of the biggest bat viewing parties of the year, but July-Sept are all great. You can view them for free, or choose a Sunset Bat Watching boat excursion. Be sure to book in advance.

Another little park very close by. Better for younger kids. Beautiful poppy display in the Spring. Look for the historic and curious rock Sphere will you are there! Located at 704 Ash Street, which is 7th and Ash basically. Ash Street runs parallel and is right next to College Street. It also has a volleyball pit.

A little further away but a nice park for mixed ages. We have a little water splash pad here which is free and a wonderful way to cool off. Usually there is a spot in the shade for the adults to sit. You may want to bring a blanket. Located at 1707 San Jose Street.
