The Viking stronghold town of Bridgnorth consists of two parts linked by the Cliff Railway. The lower town in the Severn gorge formed the navigable limit for Viking traders, while the fortified hilltop endured a long siege during the English civil war, until the castle was undermined by tunneling from the Lower Town. The remains of the castle keep now lean more than the tower at Piza.
