The closest store to the house - A small grocery store with the essentials, coffee, canned goods, bread, deli meats, cheese, some coffee, extra water. Head south for a few miles, on your left. *Turns into a bar / local hangout on certain nights (Usually Sat/Sunday). Give Tony a call to see if he’s open for dinner.

Sightseeing / Adventures

A less-secluded and more affluent area of Eleuthera, technically its own small Island (Dunmore Town). Drive past the ELH airport to the water taxi ($5 cash each way) and spend the day on Harbour Island! Be ready for local gift shops and dives, fancy restaurants/resorts, golf-cart rentals (bring more cash for this, should be about $50 for a regular cart for the day), pink sand beaches, and big yachts at the marinas. Bring a bathingsuit, change of clothes, sunscreen, and cards+cash!

Bring backup headlights and flashlights! It's pitch black down there but so fun for friends and family (adventurous kids only). Trek through the stalactites and stalagmites of the cave of hatchet bay. It takes about 30 mins to walk through if you’re meandering. Wear good shoes (sneakers or strapped-on sandals). Don't worry, you can't get lost unless you lose your lights.. 1 entrance leading to a tight exit (see photos). If you don’t want to climb out then just go back through to the entrance. If you do climb out of the exit (beware of broken ladder), walk left up the grown-in road until you come to the farm/Queens Hwy and go right along the hwy to get back to the entrance road where you parked. BE CAREFUL anytime you walk along the Hwy!! Cars drive by very fast.

A not-so-short drive south will bring you down to Davis Harbour, one of the safest and largest marinas on Eleuthera. We usually meet up there for charters or with friends with large boats down there to head out to sea for the day.

The most famous bridge in Eleuthera! You will drive across this bridge when coming North from ELH airport to the house. It is a 1-way so be prepared to stop for oncoming traffic, hop out and take a photo or video if you want. Deep blue Atlantic on one side, bright turquoise Caribbean on the other, beautiful!

Conselho para os viajantes

O que levar

Don't under pack! Think cool and casual.

Don’t forget your travel essentials - there’s not much shopping in Eleuthera! Expect a couple gift shops around each township but everyday items are sparse and expensive - all other shopping is essentially small convenience food stores. Dress is casual everywhere, some people wear resort beachwear to nicer restaurants or for photo-ops but mostly everyone wears comfy/breathable casuals and beach attire..It can be hot! Bring a variety of types of shoes, sneakers or water shoes for adventuring, waterproof sandals for daily activities, and a comfy pair to wear around the house & out to dinner.
Como economizar

Don't plan on buying many non-food items on the island

Very limited shopping options. Don't forget vacationer essentials like bathing suits, comfortable sneakers, waterproof sandals, sunscreen, etc. Gift shops will have some clothing, local handmade trinkets, hot sauce & jams, but there are no chain stores or wide selections, + prices can be high!

Rental Cars are the way to go

Check out the house manual for more tips and call Kean Stubbs - He has great prices, friendly service, and good Island vehicles. (242) 335-6111 (242) 422-9611 We recommend 4wd for any driving off main roads.
Como economizar

Bring food items for longer stays

If you plan to stay longer than a week and cook the majority of your meals, it might be worth it to check a cooler of meat/cold items and/or a suitcase of non-perishable foods. Local seafood is the way to go but food can get expensive quickly in Eleuthera, especially any meat fancier than chicken. Don't expect normal selections or prices, like in the US!

Beware of (but enjoy) Bahamian Time

In "Lutra," locals have told us you have to "think slow to stay cool" -- funny but true! That being said, please anticipate somewhat slow service at restaurants and tardiness... It's Island-time bey! Enjoy the ride.
Como economizar

Bring a good amount of Ca$h

US dollars and Bahamian dollars are 1:1 and treated equally, you do not have to exchange money before you arrive! Most establishments take cards but might be limited, it’s always a good idea to bring cash with you in Eleuthera! Bahamians appreciate cash tips as well.

Driving in Eleuthera: KEEP LEFT!

PLEASE BE CAREFUL DRIVING AT NIGHT! It is very dark and people drive fast between towns! *STAY LEFT!! *Side roads get washed out often—We recommend 4wd for any driving off main roads.
