The territory of Borjomi had an important strategic position in the Middle Ages. The shortest roads from Borjomi passed in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Kartli and short trails in Imereti. Some fortresses were supposed to protect these roads, including Gogia fortress. Gogia Fortress is mentioned in historical sources from the XVI century. The name Gogia comes from its owner.The fortress was under the ownership of the Borjomi rulers, and feudal lords, the Avalishvilis. The gorge and the fortress witnessed a battle between external enemies and between the Avalishvilis as well. In the second half of the XVIII century, the constant attacks of Lezgians made life impossible in the valley. Due to this, the Avalishvili family settled in Shida Kartli.
