Portara (the Great Door) is a massive marble doorway which lies close to the port of Naxos, on the islet of Palatia. Myth says that the islet of Palatia was exactly where the Minoan princess Ariadne was abandoned by her lover Theseus. Around the year 530 B.C when Naxos was at its peak of glory, the ruler of that era, Lygdamis, wanted to build the highest and most magnificent buildings in all of Greece in Naxos, but the work stopped abruptly. Lygdamis was overthrown in 524 BC and the temple was never completed. Today all that remains of the temple is the Portara. Portara is almost 6 m. high and more than 3.5 m. wide. It is believed that this temple was to be built in the honour of Greek God Apollo. Proof of this lies in the fact that the temple faces in the direction of Delos island, which is believed to be Apollo's birthplace. • Location: Chora / port of Naxos • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+Plaka/%CE%9D%CE%B1%CF%8C%CF%82+%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85+%CE%91%CF%80%CF%8C%CE%BB%CE%BB%CF%89%CE%BD%CE%B1,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+843+00/@37.0797297,25.3675011,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980a2ca64fffff:0x8c2cd3253f72f58a!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%9D%CE%B1%CF%8C%CF%82+%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85+%CE%91%CF%80%CF%8C%CE%BB%CE%BB%CF%89%CE%BD%CE%B1,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+843+00/@37.0530279,25.3828698,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980a2ca64fffff:0x8c2cd3253f72f58a!3e0

The Glezos tower (Krispi) stands near the northwestern gate and extends in part along the western and northern side of the fortress (Castro). The Venetian Markos II Sanoudos built the fortress of Chora in Naxos with circuit towers, one of which, the Glezos tower (Crispi) is still preserved. The remarkable statue of Kouros can be seen outside the village of Melanes. There is a second Kouros statue located outside of the village of Apollonas, in northern Naxos. The statue is 6m. long and dates back to 7th century. Historians assume that the statue depicts god Apollo or god Dionysus. Others believe that the statue represented a local hero, which is why it is so large in size. Remains of ancient temples surround Kouros statue. The Castle of Apaliros is located in southern Naxos, built on a privileged bastion. It was one of the most important settlements from the Byzantine period and it is believed that the entire Byzantine city of Naxos was concentrated around it. In 1207, the castle was occupied by the Venetians and then abandoned or destroyed by them. According to tradition, Marco Sanudo destroyed it, fearing its capture by his enemies. On the 12th Km of the main road linking the capital city of Naxos (Chora), with the inland (Halki, Filoti), the Bazeos Castle dominates the land leading to the seacoast of Agiassos.  The tower dates back to the 17th century and belongs to the most typical group of monuments in Naxos, dating from 13th to the 18th century. The reason for the common presence of such buildings has its sources in the social and historic conditions prevailing in post-Byzantine years. At first, this castle functioned as a monastery and was called monastery of the True Cross (“Timios Stavros”). In the first decades of the 19th century however, the last remaining monks abandoned it. By the end of the 19th century, the castle was bought by the Bazeos family. In 2000, the first phase of restoration was completed and since then it has functioned as a cultural activities space. • Location: Damarionas (on the road to Agiassos) • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/Bazeos+Tower,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.0562295,25.4092879,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980f47896f23ff:0xeb2e5f1ff2e5a33d!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/Bazeos+Tower,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.0028598,25.4317155,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980f47896f23ff:0xeb2e5f1ff2e5a33d!3e0

BAZEOS TOWER

One of the greatest temples of Naxos was established in Iria in the 14th century BC. The temple was dedicated to Dionysus. The worship of the gods from the Mycenaean (14th century BC) to the mid-Geometric period (800-750 BC) took place outdoors. Then four successive buildings were built at the same location and this is the birth of the marble architecture of the Greek islands. • Location: Iria • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/Temple+of+Dionysus,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9+%CE%9C%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%AD%CF%82+%CE%9A%CF%85%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%82/@37.0649915,25.3716164,13z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x149809637a1313b5:0xd76edd04dd8a176f!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/Temple+of+Dionysus,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9+%CE%9C%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%AD%CF%82+%CE%9A%CF%85%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%82/@37.065528,25.3747603,13z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x149809637a1313b5:0xd76edd04dd8a176f!3e0

The Archeological Museum of Naxos works of art and objects of every day use dating from the Late Neolithic period to Early Christian times (5300 BC - 5th c. AD). These finds came to light in the excavations which have been continuing on the island since the Second World War. Naxos is the largest and most important of the Cyclades, a rich island with a natural environment suitable for the development of farming and stock-raising. It is also an island with good natural harbors, a circumstance which has contributed much to its strong continuous cultural presence in Greece from the end of the 4th millennium BC to the present day. Naxos first flourished during Early Cycladic II period (about 2700 - 2300 BC), during which, along with the small nearby islets, it evolved into one of the most important commercial and cultural centres of the period. Excavations over the last forty years have brought a large number of archaeological sites (Grotta, Aplomata, Pithos in Chora, Melanes, Sangri, Iria, Tsikalario in central Naxos, Panormos, Korphi t'Aroniou in east Naxos), and also the many finds that are now housed in the Naxos Museum. The archaeological collections of the Naxos Museum include some important finds, especially from the Early Cycladic periods (3200 to 2300 BC), though also from the earlier historical phases; many of these finds are unique. The collections of Early Cycladic marble figurines is second to only to that of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, and there are also some very fine collections of vases dating from the Mycenaean (late 2nd millennium BC) and Geometric periods (9th - 8th c. BC). The Archaic (7th - 6th c. BC), Classical (5th - 4th c. BC) and Hellenistic (3rd - 1st c. BC) periods are represented by characteristic examples of pottery and terracotta figurines. The Roman period (1st c. BC to 2nd c. AD) has yielded not only pottery but also a large, highly interesting collection of glass vases. Archaic sculpture is represented by a few important works. • Location: Chora / port of Naxos • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%91%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B1%CE%B9%CE%BF%CE%BB%CE%BF%CE%B3%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%8C+%CE%9C%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%83%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%85+%2F+Naxos+Archeological+Museum,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9+%CE%9C%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%AD%CF%82+%CE%9A%CF%85%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%82+843+00/@37.0526969,25.3696759,16z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980bd5b1d8b04d:0xe7b4475157ea42db!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%91%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B1%CE%B9%CE%BF%CE%BB%CE%BF%CE%B3%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%8C+%CE%9C%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%83%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%85+%2F+Naxos+Archeological+Museum,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9+%CE%9C%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%AD%CF%82+%CE%9A%CF%85%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%82+843+00/@37.0376655,25.4136072,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980bd5b1d8b04d:0xe7b4475157ea42db!3e0

Very close to the Baroji Tower, ascending from the village square, there is Panagia Filotitissa (Virgin Mary Filotitissa). It was built in 1710 by residents of the village who had clashed with the lord of the Baroji district because they wanted to build a large church on a property he owned. The inhabitants somehow prevailed and built an impressive temple dedicated to Our Virgin Lady. In the courtyard of the church there is a sculpture of the Assumption with the inscription that it was made in 1779. On the plaque there are still depictions of angels and the two-headed Byzantine eagle decorated with flowers. The right gate is particularly interesting as it is adorned with sculptured capitals. On the façade of the church, at the gates and at the belfry, there are sculptures with inscriptions of the chronologies created. The central gate appears to have been painted in 1875 and the left in 1718. • Location: Filoti • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AF%CF%84%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B1,+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8C%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0523021,25.4992189,16z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d1c6c3ffd:0x175072aeacdf27f!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AF%CF%84%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B1,+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8C%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0123019,25.4564658,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d1c6c3ffd:0x175072aeacdf27f!3e0

The central gate appears to have been painted in 1875 and the left in 1718. • Location: Filoti • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AF%CF%84%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B1,+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8C%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0523021,25.4992189,16z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d1c6c3ffd:0x175072aeacdf27f!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AF%CF%84%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B1,+%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8C%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0123019,25.4564658,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d1c6c3ffd:0x175072aeacdf27f!3e0

The church Panagia (Virgin Mary) Drosiani is located between the Chalki and the village Moni. The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin of rain, since according to tradition; the faithful locals were trying to exorcise the problem of drought that plagued the island for many years. The cluster of temples of Drosiani was built in the 6th century and is one of the most important early Christian churches. According to archaeologists it features the best preserved murals with the oldest one dating back to the 7th century and reaching up to the 14th century. The most famous of these is a double play on the dome of the church showing Christ at an early age and then as an adult man. • Location: Moni • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1%CF%82+%CE%94%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%AE%CF%82+-Panagia+Drosiani+church,+%CE%95%CF%80%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BA%CE%AE+%CE%9F%CE%B4%CF%8C%CF%82+%CE%A7%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%BA%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%8D-%CE%9A%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BC%CF%8E%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.0793688,25.49236,15z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x149807b5666f1257:0x8cb01fe5f00a41b2!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%95%CE%BA%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%AF%CE%B1+%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82+%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1%CF%82+%CE%94%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%AE%CF%82+-Panagia+Drosiani+church,+%CE%95%CF%80%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BA%CE%AE+%CE%9F%CE%B4%CF%8C%CF%82+%CE%A7%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%BA%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%8D-%CE%9A%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BC%CF%8E%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.0235415,25.4538622,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x149807b5666f1257:0x8cb01fe5f00a41b2!3e0

Nature (beaches, mountains)

Opposite Irakleia island is the southernmost beach of the island, in the bay of Kalantos. An excellent sandy beach but not organized which on one side is the sea and on the other side is the well-known Kalantos marsh, which is the first station of migratory birds flying from Africa. The beach has golden sand and turquoise waters but it is not sandy in all places, since it has many plaques in some places. In recent years it has taverns for food, coffee and refreshments. There is a harbor for small boats in Kalantos. By private car or motorbike you will follow the route: Chora-Galanado-Chalki-Filoti-Kalantos (42.2 km). Kalantos is not connected to Chora with a direct bus service. You can visit Filoti village which the largest village of Cyclades. There are many taverns and café bars there. *** Recommendation: There is asphalt road, but you have to drive slowly & carefully, because you cross mountains! • Location: Kalantos • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/Kalantos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.001893,25.4442182,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498107793b035ed:0x234a3ddd0c8b4a43!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/Kalantos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/@37.0409634,25.4647983,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498107793b035ed:0x234a3ddd0c8b4a43!3e0

Approximately 22 kms from Naxos Town to the southwest of Naxos island one can find the bay of Agiassos with its clean and calm waters even when the strong north winds are blowing. The road to Agiasos is all made of asphalt, except coming from Pyrgaki where a serviceable dirt road continues on after that for about 3.5 kilometres. Local bus shuttle service is very poor, so it is advised that visitors who decide to stay there should also rent a car or motorcycle / scooter. The beach of Agiassos is a big sandy beach, not organised beach, almost 700m. long, ideally for families with children and elderly, with blue-green crystal clean and shallow waters, where part of it borders a wetland with many bird species. It is one of the most unspoiled beaches in the island and is characterized as one of the most seductive beaches in Greece and its coastal zone has been classified as a site of particular ecological and social value and has been included in the European Natura 2000 network. The place is ideal for exploring nature. The verdant hills match harmonic with the turquoise color of the sea vastness and the peaceful scenery. Here you will find some species of plants such as: erysimum naxense, allium luteolum, tordylium aegaeum, muscari cycladicum and limodorum abortivum, as well as species of meadow vegetation, such as carob, lettuce, sage, and cumara. Also the phrygana, with representatives such as myrtle, aspalathi, helix, asphodelos, skina, oregano, mulberry and thyme, are diffuse in the mountains from which Agiassos is enclosed. Crossing a 10 km of asphalted road to the east, you will probably find the most beautiful Tower of Naxos, the Bazeos Tower, built in 1671. Until the 19th century it was used as a Monastery of the Holy Cross, but since 2000 it hosts the Naxos Festival, which includes many artistic and cultural events. Praia de Agiassos
Plaka beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches of Naxos and is the natural continuation of the beach of Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios. It is located in the center of the west coast of the island in an open bay and 8 km south of the port of Naxos. Overlooking Glaronissia and the island of Paros, it was a favorite destination for hippies in the 1970s. The beach is very long with a length of 4 km, while impressive sand dunes form at the back of the beach which in August with the white lilies that sprout create a magnificent setting. The immense golden sandy beach with shallow turquoise waters as well as the fact that it is protected by the summer north winds make it a favourite destination for all ages and ideal for families with children. Organized with umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, in some places you will find a natural shade of cedars that grow near the sea while there is also plenty of space, thanks to its large size, to make use of your own equipment. There are cafes, beach bars and taverns all over the place for the necessary supplies and to enjoy Greek cuisine after your swim. On the beach there are also organized facilities for all kinds of water sports, either for rent or learning, offering moments of relaxation and fun to the 'active' visitors. It is also ideal for diving enthusiasts who can explore the marine rocks. Look for "Naxos eye" in and out of the sea, a unique shell jewelry of nature that you will find only here. Access to the beach is very easy by car and with the possibility of full-length parking or alternatively with regular bus services from Chora. The magnificent backdrop of the beach and the magnificent sunset overlooking Paros will surely leave you unforgettable! Mountain Zas, which extends southeast from the village of Filoti, is the highest peak of both Naxos and the Cyclades (1,004 m). At 600 meters above sea level lies the cave of Za, one of the most impressive natural attractions of Naxos. The cave was excavated in 1962. Excavations made in the cave between 1985-86 and 1994 have revealed findings from the Neolithic to the Classical and Roman times, many of which are on display at the Naxos Archaeological Museum. The cave is of great interest also from a speleological point of view. The cave is 115 m. long and 10 m. deeper than the entry level, and it contains large stalactites and stalagmites. Also near the entrance to a small chamber there is a nave of Zoodochos Pigi, built during the Turkish rule, when the cave was a refuge for the Christian inhabitants of the area. North and South of Keramoti two major rivers of Naxos are created, which start respectively from the mountains Koronos and Fanari. These two rivers are united at the west end of the village, at Dipotamata. Continuing its course through rocks and lush vegetation, the water joins the brook that runs from the source of Kanafi and creates the waterfall of Rutsunas, 20m high. Where the waters of the waterfall fall, there is a plane tree and a lake with sufficient depth. The water continues its course until it reaches the plain of the Eggares, irrigating the area before reaching the sea at Ammitis beach. The running water, which keeps its flow even in summer, creates a lush magical image. There is a path of unique beauty that starts near the old bridge of Keramoti and leads to the waterfall. *** Recommendation: There is asphalt road, but you have to drive slowly & carefully, because you cross mountains! • Location: Keramoti • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.gr/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%9A%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BA%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82+%CE%A1%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%84%CF%83%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%BD%CE%B1%CF%82,+%CE%9A%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BC%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AE+843+02/@37.1062377,25.4963555,14z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498078b71ba279b:0x99f69639ddbde86d!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.gr/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%9A%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BA%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82+%CE%A1%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%84%CF%83%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%BD%CE%B1%CF%82,+%CE%9A%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BC%CF%89%CF%84%CE%AE+843+02/@37.0410898,25.4585174,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498078b71ba279b:0x99f69639ddbde86d!3e0

Villages

Halki or Halkion is a village in central Naxos. The central settlement (Chalki) is located 15-16 km from Naxos Town. It is a particularly beautiful and fertile village that stands out for the architecture of its houses, which are typical examples of neoclassicism. The local community of Chalkio includes the villages of Akadimis, Kaloxilos, Kerami, Rahi (or Monoitsia), Metochi, Koutsoherado, Tsikalario and Chalki. Just before entering Halki, from Chora, there is an old narrow (preserved) bridge that needs special attention. Continuing to the exit, towards the mountainous villages, there is a road junction to Filoti - Apiranthos - Stavros Keramoti and Naxos Monastery - Stavros Keramoti from where a single road continues to Apollonas village. At this intersection of Halki lies the Heron monument of the village. Halki is a small but unique headland village. It stands out for its old tiled mansions, classic balconies with nice railings, rooftop garlands and paved courtyards. It is next to the stream, with its tall trees and running water, the troughs that washed their clothes in other seasons and the small green gardens. Inside the village and around it there are many archaeological monuments, Byzantine churches full of frescoes and tall Venetian towers. In general there are many churches from the Byzantine period in the area. Important monuments are Panagia the First (6th century AD), dedicated to the Annunciation of Virgin Mary, Saint George Diasoritis (11th century AD), Taxiarchis at Monoitsia (first millennium) and Pyrgos Barozzi or Gratsias later, a magnificent building built in the early 17th century by the Venetian Barozzi family, as well as by Papadakis (Markopolis) at the Akademies. Halki has grown rapidly in recent years. It has the mountain headquarters of the Municipality and various shops serving the wider area, such as cafes, pastry shops and restaurants. Finally, there is the "Vallindra" distillery, which offers guests and passers-by its exquisite citrus distillate. • Location: Halkion • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%A7%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%BA%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF+843+02/@37.0632098,25.4818597,18z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498063d725e6779:0x48902734b03b3e00!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%A7%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%BA%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF+843+02/@37.0145361,25.4478814,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498063d725e6779:0x48902734b03b3e00!3e0

The largest village of Naxos lies not at one of its beautiful beaches, but at an altitude of about 400 meters, between two hills, at the foot of Zeus or Za mountain. Lively, beautiful, bustling and vibrant, the beautiful Filoti with its 1.800 inhabitants is one of the most active and interesting hubs of the Greek region. It consists of three settlements, Rachidi on the right, as one can see the village reaching from the main road, Klefaros on the left and the younger Lioyri opposite them. The look is shortened in the village square, the so-called Bridge, dominated by plane-trees over a century old. In the past, squares were used elsewhere in the two settlements, such as the vegetable square at Klefaros and the squares of Agios Konstantinos and Fasola in Rachidi. The first is dominated by the church of Panagia Filotitissa, a basilica built in 1718 on the site of an old Byzantine church and dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Nearby is the Barozzi Tower, reminiscent of the era of Frankish rule on the island. The cobblestone streets of dodgy formations, arches and stables, make up the fascinating mosaic of the village, where the Cycladic tradition remains alive and reflected in every corner. The cultural richness of the village is evident even to the visitor who arrives at Filoti for the first time. The cultural centers, the sights, the Heron monument with 100 names of fallen Filotites, the Cultural Center of the Filotite Association, which houses the Anomerite Library, the Cinema Club, the heart of the village and the rhythm of the daily life of hundreds of inhabitants, who love and continue their traditions. The festival of August 15th lasts three days. It is one of the largest in Naxos, with Panagia Filotitissa celebrated with honors, dances and Naxos violins. • Location: Filoti • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8E%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0420155,25.4290522,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d361be687:0x6742d8133500885e!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%A6%CE%B9%CE%BB%CF%8E%CF%84%CE%B9/@37.0123019,25.4558801,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x1498066d361be687:0x6742d8133500885e!3e0

Its narrow, winding steps and endless houses are almost built on top of each other. The traditional stone-built village of Apeiranthos is built at an altitude of between 570 and 640 meters on the eastern slopes of Mount Fanari. The residents who are completely authentic, are the ones who managed to stop the time, not to touch the Apeiranthos. They wake up in the morning, most have animals, some make cheese and others work in emery, the island's most valuable "capital". The local dialect has been kept intact and is completely separate from the rest of Naxos. The first historical reference to the village dates back to 1420, when the Italian traveler Christopher Buondelmondi mentions it in his book "Liber insularum archipelagi". The name Apiranthos is considered to be the newest name of the village. The name was given a few years before the Revolution of 1821. Others come from the Perinth of Constantinople, from which proven settlers of the village who fled here in order to evade the persecution of the Turks. The village is developed around two 17th century towers. One of them is Zevgolis Tower. The settlement still retains its Venetian architecture, with narrow cobbled streets that feature arches, with each corner a separate creation of folk architecture. The emerald of Naxos is located on the "viscera" of the Ammaksi mountain in northern Naxos and between the villages of Apeiranthos and Koronos. Naxos emery has been one of the most important Greek minerals for a long time, as Naxos is Europe's only emirate and one of the few on Earth. Naxos emery has been one of the most important Greek minerals for a long time, as Naxos is Europe's only emirate and one of the few on Earth. Apeiranthos is the village of National Resistance fighter Manolis Glezos and the birthplace of former Prime Minister Petros Protopapadakis. *** Recommendation: There is asphalt road, but you have to drive slowly & carefully, because you cross mountains! • Location: Apeiranthos • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/%CE%91%CF%80%CE%B5%CE%AF%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B8%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%85/@37.0718571,25.517851,15z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x149806a60049242d:0x500bd2ce2ba6410!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/%CE%91%CF%80%CE%B5%CE%AF%CF%81%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B8%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%85/@37.0358373,25.4718358,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x149806a60049242d:0x500bd2ce2ba6410!3e0
Hora, the capital of Naxos, is built in the middle of the west coast of the island, in the place of the ancient city of Naxos. Visitors and especially lovers of ancient monuments will have the opportunity to get to know many and important monuments of Hellenism, such as the Portara, the archaeological site of Grota but also the Venetian Castle and the Archaeological Museum. Chora is a beautiful Cycladic state. Chora has banks, a health center, a post office and a very good market where you can find all the local products, folk art, clothes, jewelry etc. Distances in Chora are covered on foot. There are two large municipal parking lots, one at the seaside and one at Grota. The vehicles move on the Chora ring road that starts from the port. The highway closes for all vehicles, in the afternoon and evening. Chora is connected by regular transport to the villages and beaches of Naxos. Naxos has been inhabited continuously since the end of the 4th millennium BC. until today. Here, according to mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication, was born and raised. Zeus, the father of the gods of the ancient Greeks, was also raised in Naxos, though he was born in Crete. This is due to the name of the highest mountain on the island, Za (1004 m.). Excavations in the last 40 years have brought to light a large number of archaeological sites (Grotta, Plinth in Chora, Aptomas, Panormos, Pythos, Sagri, Melanes, Iria, Tsikalario, etc.) and important finds, most of which are in the Archaeological Museum of Naxos. The Naxos Archaeological Museum exhibits works of art and objects of daily use dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Christian period (5300 BC - 5th century AD). Since 1973, the Naxos Archaeological Museum has been housed in the building that housed the commercial school, among which students is Nikos Kazantzakis. It is a monumental historical monument, built in the period from 1600 to 1800 and is an imposing example of the architecture developed in Naxos during the heyday of the island during the Frankish period. But the monument that impresses the visitor and is considered the "emblem" of the island is Portara. Locals have long called it "Portara" because of its large size. This time-honored monument here is the giant, marble temple gate dedicated to Apollo. The temple was built in the 6th century BC. century. Today the islet that hosts it is called "Palatia". Christians built a church on the ruins of the ancient temple, as was customary at the time, and an important settlement was developed around the church. On the hill that is the city's natural citadel, Markos Sanoudos built the Castle of Chora, on the ruins of the ancient citadel, using materials from the ancient city, which had been destroyed by pirate raids. Passing the "Trani Door" we enter the mysterious, medieval castle settlement which was not only a place of residence but also an administrative, educational and religious center of the Venetian conquerors. In the center of the castle settlement is the square with the catholic cathedral and the ruins of the tower, which tradition wants to be the palace of Sanoudos. The magnificent castle houses of the Castle are now inhabited by Catholics, descendants of the Venetians. Each of these mansions hides stories and legends. One of the old mansions is open to the public and functions as a Venetian museum. Exhibitions and music nights are hosted on site. In the alleys of the Castle you will find shops of all kinds, coffee shops and taverns. • Location: Chora of Naxos (port of Naxos) • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/Port+Of+Naxos,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82/@37.0784273,25.3742165,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980bd3840e5205:0x929f2807581962bd!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/Port+Of+Naxos,+%CE%9D%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%BF%CF%82/@37.0366688,25.4097147,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x14980bd3840e5205:0x929f2807581962bd!3e0

Apollonas of Naxos was formerly a port of call for ships operating the "barren line" of the Cyclades. It was not until about 1960 that the carriageway began to open. Today in Apollonas there is a small pier that serves mainly fishing boats and small yachts. The homonymous bay is wide enough for water sports and provides safety mainly in south and southwest winds. Apollonas is connected with Naxos Town and all other villages with the west axis (Naxos Town - Egares-Apollonas) and the central axis. To the west and above the seaside village of Apollonas lies one of the two ancient quarries of Naxos where the greatest art of antiquity, marble sculpture, was first discovered. The "kouros" of Naxos are the oldest in the Greek world and from this ancient Apollo quarry they were transported to Delos, but also to hundreds of statues and marbles. In the ancient quarry of Apollo is the oversized Kouros (11 m.) of God Dionysus, dozens of marble sections and many pieces of architectural remains. At the top of the quarry hill there is the inscription "Mount Apollo's sanctuary" dating from the 5th to 4th century BC and probably belongs to a sanctuary of God that existed there. On the mountain "Kalogeros" east of the bay of Apollo lies the ruins of the "castle of Kalogeros", which operated from prehistoric times to Byzantine times and Turkish rule. A prehistoric tower with Cycladic walls and some of the Byzantine buildings (towers, rooms and tanks) are preserved. The remains (old mole) of the "ancient port of Apollonas" were discovered recently, from which antiquities were loaded in antiquity to be transported by sea to Delos and elsewhere. The marble cobblestones have also been found on which they were transported to the sea with the sliding system for marble cargoes to load. Other prehistoric castles are found in the areas of Miris-Kana and Ginaikopetra. *** Recommendation: There is asphalt road, but you have to drive slowly & carefully, because you cross mountains! • Location: Apollonas • Route from my house in Plaka: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Petrino+Beach+Restaurant,+%CE%A0%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%BA%CE%B1/Apollonas/@37.1831065,25.5394785,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a1a4aaceb4d2cf:0x6a09f7f73c39a300!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a2a9485ceae58d:0xba2ecc09ffa71729!3e0 • Route from my house in Agiassos: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Agiassos+beach,+%CE%94%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1/Apollonas/@37.0612839,25.5309899,11z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x149811cd4cc64b25:0x8cecacb422c2916c!1m2!1m1!1s0x14a2a9485ceae58d:0xba2ecc09ffa71729!3e0
