Herdsmen’s huts at Velika Planina The end of spring is when the cowbells out on the Alpine pastures of the Velika Planina plateau start ringing, announcing the arrival of herdsmen. It’s a magical plateau with one of the largest herdsmen’s settlements in Europe. And you’re invited to learn about the fascinating life on the mountain pasture and sample the dairy goodies they’ll prepare for you. Go for a walk through the meadows or take a hike (or mountain bike) across the plateau.

The Krka spring is located near the town of the same name in the northern part of the Dry Landscape. The excursion is a combination of the beauty of the numerous karst springs of one of our most beautiful rivers and its tributaries, the old rural architecture, the cultural landscape nurtured by its inhabitants and the medieval castle heritage. Upon arrival in the village of Krka, we will be surprised by the size of the village church, and even more so by the spring of Poltarica a few hundred meters ahead. The stream, which could also be called a small river, is the first tributary of the Krka River and springs at several places below the rocks at the foot of a steep, forested slope. On the rock above the spring once stood a heavily fortified medieval castle Vrhkrka from which only traces of ruins can be seen today. The entrance to the Poltarico Cave is also located at the springs, which is closed to tourists. The path leads us through the village Gradiček. When Vrhkrka Castle collapsed, a more comfortable successor was built in the village, but it was later rebuilt into a farmhouse. After Gradic, we walk to the spring of Krka. Just above it is the Krška jama cave, which can be viewed with prior notice. It is a dry spring cave that only eats groundwater during prolonged rains. In particular, water flows from Radensko polje flow into it. We return through the village of Krka, where we are fascinated by the long Javornik dam and the footbridge that leads across the Krka. The Krka spring is located in the Dolenjska region and in the sub-region Novomeško-Krška. In particular, water flows from Radensko polje flow into it. In the southern hilly part of the Posavsko hribovje hills lies the village of Gradišče, a popular scenic and hiking destination. Primskovo was first mentioned in 1258, by the name of Prinskau. In the past, this region was especially known by the cone-shaped Primskova gora mountain with a famous pilgrimage trail and by numerous vineyards. At the top of Primskova gora mountain, the remains of one of the most magnificent defence camps in the region of Slovenia can still be seen. The camp dating from the beginning of the 15th century was designed as a fortified signal point. Legend has it that despite numerous invasions the Ottomans did not succeed in breaking the defence, the reason for this being Mary, the protector of the church. Special attention is attracted by three shrines in the middle of the camp. The heart of them all is the parish church of Mary's Birth which has been famous as Mary's pilgrimage. St. Peter's church dates from Roman times and is between 800 and 1000 years old. It houses the tomb of the Bogenšperk castle nobility. Both churches, along with the youngest St. Nicolas church, are mentioned as soon as in Slava Vojvodine Kranjske (The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola) by Janez Vajkard Valvasor. As a remembrance of the days gone by, a mighty linden tree grows in the middle of the camp. Moreover, a visitor is reminded of the strong religious legacy of this place by the chapels of the Stations of the Cross skirting the road to the hilltop. In Primskovo, Jurij Humar, »the wonder-man from Primskovo«, a homoeopath, people's doctor, an outstanding practitioner of rediesthesia, bioenergetics and telepathy, used to work in the past.

1. Bogenšperk Castle The Heart of Slovenia can be seen best from a lookout point, such as the mighty Bogenšperk Castle in the proximity of Šmartno pri Litiji, situated at the altitude of 412 metres. The renowned polyhistor Janez Vajkard Valvasor enjoyed this stunning view in the 17th century. Today one can visit a collection of attire, superstition, copper typography and alchemy magic collection andstylistically arranged castle halls, such as Valvasor’s study with an original copy of the book The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1689). In addition to individual visits, large groups of visitors can make prior arrangements for an animated tour around the castle with the baroness Ana Maximila and the castle keeper Jurij, as well as for pedagogical programmes. Bogenšperk Castle is an excellent place for weddings – in the castle hall or under the mighty treetops of the castle tree alley. There is also the Castle tavern, where you can make arrangements for the wedding ceremony or other personal and business celebrations. You can even organise a picnic here! Bogenšperk Castle is a unique environment for various business events: seminars, conferences, presentations, banquets and picnics. You can reserve individual rooms or the whole castle! You will remember Bogenšperk Castle for its unique souvenirs: the Valvasor silver coin, a graphic sheet with castle print, a miniature copy of the book The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, castle spirit and herbal oils, all available at the castle shop. Also, visit the castle for itsnumerous events hosted all year round or for the many opportunities it offers for hiking and recreation along the circular running trail.

The ascent to the Šmarna Gora hill, 664 metres above sea level, takes from half an hour to a little over an hour, depending on the route taken. The top of the hill, accessible by 15 well-maintained, waymarked and mostly relatively easy routes, offers beautiful views of the Kamnik and Julian Alps, the Ljubljana basin and the distant Dolenjska region with Mount Trdinov vrh. The hilltop is occupied by a restaurant and a Baroque church of the Mother of God, built in the first half of the 18th century. The church was the work place of the "Priest of Triglav", the legendary clergyman, composer and mountaineer Jakob Aljaž, born in the little village of Zavrh at the foot of the hill. Šmarna gora's oldest sight is a plague column erected by those who survived plague and the struggle with the Turks. Another attraction sited on top of the hill is a famous wishing bell, believed to fulfil the wishes of those who ring it. The western peak of Šmarna Gora, called Grmada, is seven metres higher than its eastern peak. During the time of Turkish invasions, bonfires were lit on top of it to warn of danger. Across Grmada, a 4.5 kilometre nature trail leads to the top of Šmarna Gora. It is marked with information boards giving descriptions of 832 plant and 263 fungus species.

The Venice of Dolenjska – Slovenia’s only town on a river island Kostanjevica na Krki is not only Slovenia’s smallest town, but also the only one which stands on a river island, with the green Krka winding its way around it. The meandering river offers charming reflections of the Gorjanci hills, about which stories were written by Janez Trdina; the Krka flows slowly and lazily, and in summer generously offers refreshment to hot swimmers and beckons you over for a boat trip around the town. The Venice of Dolenjska has its own gondolas – characteristic wooden boats that glide silently over the water and let the tired oarsman rest peacefully by the river bank. Kostanjevica na Krki is romantic and beautiful; in the local area you can enjoy walking, cycling and horse riding, or you can go out exploring the diverse cultural offer. Only a small town offers so much luxury in such a small space – the art of sculpture at Forma Viva, a look around the Cistercian monastery or a visit to the Božidar Jakac Gallery. Last but not least, Kostanjevica na Krki is a treasure for food lovers – you can enjoy local specialities, Cviček and high-quality wines, freshly picked fruit and local fruit juices.

Nanos is a high Karst plateau, which rises steeply above Postojna basin and Vipavska Brda wine region. It has several summits, but the most popular one is the panoramic edge by a television transmitter and 'Vojkova Koča' hut. The ascent runs on a steep and a bit more difficult path; however the descent past a charming church of St. Hieronim is really easy. In nice weather you will enjoy a first-class view.

The village of Rakitna lies in the heart of a large karst plateau surrounded by the Krim-Mokc Hill Range, at a height of 800 metres above sea level. Famed for its healthful climate, which is due to the mixing of air currents coming from the Mediterranean and the Alps, it is the location of a children's health resort. The scenic Lake Rakitna is a popular day-trip destination and base for walks and hikes around the area. Next to the lake is a modern hotel offering comfortable accommodation for the most discerning guests. The lake, suitable for swimming in the summer and ice skating in winter, offers an opportunity for common carp, grass carp, European perch, and trout fishing. Lake Rakitna is the base for a popular 40-minute circular walk and a one-and-a-half-hour archaeological trail leading to the remains of a 3rd century tower and wall, part of a Roman defence system known as Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. The village of Rakitna is also the starting point for several longer hiking and cycling routes, the most popular leading to the nearby Mount Krim (1,107m). The area offers ample opportunity for cross country skiing. In the centre of the village of Rakitna stands a Baroque church of the Holy Cross, first mentioned in 1420. The church has two side chapels and two marble altars. Its main altar is adorned with a painting by Henrik Langus and sculptures by Ivan Šubic. Its Christmas crib, handmade from tree roots, attracts large number of visitors at Christmas time.

The Cistercian monastery located in the village of Stična (Sitticum) is one of Slovenia's most important historical monuments. It was built in 1136 by Peregrin I, the then patriarch of Aquilea. It soon became one of the major cultural and economic centres of the Slovenian inhabited areas of the time, best known for the so called Stična Manuscripts (Stiški rokopisi), a famous series of illuminated medieval manuscripts written by Cistercian monks. The monastery, which continues to be home to monks, now houses the Slovenian Museum of Religion. The architectural features of the monastery complex reflect all the main European architectural styles, from early Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque. The oldest part of the monastery, which consists of a cloister and a monastic church, has survived until the present day. The Slovenian Museum of Religion (Slovenski Verski muzej) shows a permanent collection on the history of the Stična Monastery and the most important chapters in the history of Roman Catholic religion in Slovenian inhabited areas, as well as a number of works of sacral art. Visitors to the museum can view the parts of the monastery open to the public, including the monastery's basilica, famous for its Baroque altar and frescoes. Each year in November or December, the village of Stična hosts an arts festival known as Festival Stična. The places particularly well worth visiting in Stična's surrounding area are the Cvinger archaeological site above the village of Vir and the Gothic Church of St. Lambert in the village of Pristava.

Ljubljana Castle, standing on a hill above the city for about 900 years, is Ljubljana's main attraction. The castle's Outlook Tower and ramparts offer some of the most beautiful views of the city, while the castle houses a museum exhibition on Slovenian history, a puppet museum, and a number of historical rooms such as the Chapel of St George, the Prison, and a video presentation room called Virtual Castle. Ljubljana Castle, which can quickly be reached by funicular railway, also provides space for art exhibitions, houses a café, a nightclub, and two restaurants (Strelec and Gostilna na Gradu), and serves as a venue for cultural events, family entertainment, dance evenings, and open-air film screenings held under the title of Film under the Stars in the summer.

This is actually not a lake but a moor with several tiny lakes that gave the moor its name "Lovrenška Lakes". It is located near the ski resort Rogla and spreads over 22 ha. A neat path on wooden footbridges takes us into the heartland of the moor, and a wooden panoramic tower provides a nice view "from above". The moor presents a natural habitat for rare plants and animal species. It takes 3 hours for a circular route from Rogla to the lakes. How to get there: Leave the motorway 'Ljubljana – Maribor' on exit Slovenske Konjice and simply follow signposts for Rogla. It is 16 km and 1200 m of ascent from the motorway to Rogla. Park by a football field and hotel Planja. Description: Start the circular route at Rogla ski slopes. Follow a trail between a football field and a water reservoir and continue underneath a chairlift towards a large meadow (direction north-west). Soon you will notice the first signposts for Lovrenška Lakes. Follow route no. 2 on a rather wide road. All intersections are nicely marked and the path runs mostly through the woods. In a good hour of walking you will come to wooden footbridges that start in front of the moor. Ascend onto a wooden tower for a view of the moor, which actually has two parts separated by a strip of forest. The moor was created as a mineral moor on a impervious geologic surface. Peat has piled on it for 8000 years and is almost 3 meters thick in the central part. There is no river or stream flowing into the moor - it fuels only with rain water. The number of the lakes and their size varies throughout the year, and the color of the water is nearly black as the bottom of the lakes continues into the peat. On wooden footbridges you can walk into the heartland of the moor where the lakes are. The nature is tranquil and intact, so let's keep it that way. Return to the outskirts of the moor and proceed to the right. Follow the wooden footbridges towards 'Ribniška Koča', and when the bridges come to an end, turn sharply to the left towards Rogla. The path is well marked and very panoramic and sunny. We are back at Rogla in a good hour.
