It is hard to describe this place but basically it is a lake view small organic grocer plus snack bar and grill, with micro brew bar in the back, with a picnic area. Best soups, dogs, burgers all made from scratch. The best lunch destination for the locals. Get a few groceries and supplies while having an egg sandwich or a red hot (hot dog) on the back patio while staring at the gorgeous lake. And here is a major tip: ask Seth the owner if he has any soup and then buy a cup. I’m not really a soup person but their soups are fantastic.

This is a great winery a few minutes drive from our place. Beautiful view and every Sunday afternoon in August they are having live music and a food vendor - by reservation only and yes, it's during COVID. Check their web site and enjoy! My favorite wine there is the Epic Reserve Red.

The best small diner in upstate NY. The best biscuits, hash pancakes and eggs. Very tiny and housed in an old rail car, family run. Locals know it and love it.

This is a cute little local museum run by locals about the great Glenn Curtis who is the father of the seaplane and grew up in Hammondsport. Be sure to watch the great introductory film and learn about the history he forged.

Every Saturday morning until 12:30 pm the mostly Amish farmers set up a farmers market along downtown Penn Yan. If you are in town on a Saturday it's a great way to shop for fresh things for your evening meal and interact with the Amish who live mostly in Yates County.

This is our local movie theatre. They have movies every weekend in winter and every day in summer. Usually always at least one kid movie playing and a major blockbuster or two. Support local!

Favorites of ours are Tops Market for all your groceries, Long's stationary store for books and art supplies, Seneca Farms Ice Cream, BBQ Shack and Donuts Dine Right, Water St Wine Bar and the Penn Yan Diner for breakfast or lunch in an old rail car. (PS someone wrote in the local tips below that there is a Walmart and a Lowe’s here — there is not. Maybe they mean Canandaigua which is 45 min away). There is a McDonald’s however.

"Do not dress up for the Finger Lakes!"
This is a rural area so you need never dress up and if you do, people may stare. Bring old comfy and cool clothes, flip flops, old t shirts, shorts and etc. Bathing suits and watershoes for the lake bottom, sunscreen and hats, beach towels and water or sand toys. slippers for inside the house if your feet get cold on hardwood floors. For the woods, pack light colored and fully covering summer clothes such as cotton pants and long sleeve shirts, tuck your pants in your socks and use DEET type bug spray and check for ticks.
