Grocery stores

A very short ride from the house. This is the closest grocery and general store to Due West. It has been in business since 1886. You can get everything from crabbing pots and crabbing licenses, ice coolers, bait, fresh produce, dairy, toiletries, wine and more. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s close and convenient. A very casual breakfast and lunch spot. It too overlooks the marina. (See a theme here?) It’s mostly a traditional American omelette, burgers and fries kind of joint, but they also make fresh world-famous donuts in the morning and have counter service for espressos, lattes and the like featuring Starbucks coffees. They do takeout too. So, grab a breakfast sandwich or a few donuts before you head out on your boat or seaplane tour. (360) 378-9892

This is the McMillin family mausoleum. We highly recommend reading up on the history before you go. Or, if you’re a podcast listener, listen to the Lore podcast’s spooky episode 4 titled “Dinner at the Afterglow”: https://www.lorepodcast.com/episodes/4. You can walk or bike here. It’s a little over a mile from the house. You can also drive, but the parking area is still a ways away from the mausoleum. The trail from the parking area leads through the old cemetery.

If you’ve gone to any of the above places, you’ve probably already passed by the sculpture park several times by now. The sculptures are constantly changing as pieces are rotated and sold - every piece is for sale. So, the artwork you see on this trip is unlikely to be there the next time you visit. Or, maybe you’ll just buy a sculpture to take home with you. The park is 20 acres and also includes 5 marked trails and a pond. Off leash dogs are welcome. 9083 Roche Harbor Rd

Also known as Whale Watch Park, Lime Kiln Point State Park is a 36-acre day-use park with an iconic lighthouse set on the west side of San Juan Island. You may see orca whales swimming through the kelp beds in the waters off Lime Kiln, looking for salmon, since this park is considered one of the best places in the world to view whales from land. The shoreline viewpoint is about a 300-yard walk from the parking lot, restrooms, and seasonal interpretive center. The park, which features a richly diverse environment, includes the remnants and landscapes of a history filled with change, along the rocky shoreline and through the wooded uplands. Minke whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, otters and bald eagles also cruise the shoreline. The lighthouse was built in 1919 and still serves as a navigational beacon for ships in the Haro Strait. Interpretive programs, an interpretive center with gift shop and lighthouse tours are available during the summer months.
