The Cedar Creek Grist Mill is a historical mill built in 1876 by George W. Woodham family and A.C. Reid. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is an amazing place to visit. Our family absolutely loves watching the volunteers run the mill and explain how it was saved and lovingly restored by all the volunteers. There are picnic tables and a nice walking trail along the creek. The wooden covered bridge overlooking the mill is a wonderful place for photos. They host special events and music throughout the year so definitely plan your trip to this beautiful sight. NOTE: If you have a bit of whole grain or corn you want milled, bring it with you and watch them mill it before your eyes. Definitely worth a donation to keep this beautiful place running for generations to come. Located at: 43907 NE Grist Mill Rd, Woodland, WA 98674 Website: https://www.cedarcreekgristmill.org/

It's worth the drive to take in the most amazing views of Spirit Lake and Mount Saint Helens. Windy Ridge Interpretive Site is located on the northeastern side of the mountain and is about a 2-to-2.5-hour drive from the guesthouse heading East through Cougar. Located just five miles from Mount Saint Helens, the site provides a close-up view of the volcano's crater, a breathtaking panorama of a landscape radically changed during the 1980 eruption and landslide as well as Spirit Lake. Be sure to pack a lunch, extra water and snacks for this day trip. Always check the road and driving conditions, and parking pass requirements through the USDA Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot National Forest website. It typically opens around late June or early July. Located at: Forest Rd 99, Cougar, WA 98616 Website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=81498

Lakes and Day-Use Parks

This area has so many wonderful lakes and day-use parks to choose from, you won't run out of new places to visit.
If you are fishing, boating, kayaking, or just going for a nice picnic and swim this is a great park to enjoy all of the above. Speelyai is just a 10 minute drive East from the guesthouse along the Lewis River Hwy. As with most of the lake and day-use parks in the area be sure to plan ahead and get here early in order to get a spot. This park is one of the most popular on the lake and fills up quickly. It doesn't help that the parking lot is on the smaller side, but if you get a spot it is a beautiful location to enjoy. If you don't get a spot in the morning, then head out for an early evening swim. Most people from the morning are heading out by 4pm so that is the perfect time to arrive and enjoy an evening BBQ and swim by the lake. Speelyai Park is run by Pacificorp. Check here for openings and day-use fee information. Website: https://www.pacificorp.com/community/recreation/washington.html

One of our favorite parks to visit during the summer on Yale Lake. We usually have better luck getting a spot here either early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the morning groups are leaving. There's more parking here so a better bet and also our favorite because of the views. On clear days enjoy amazing views of Mount St. Helens while you swim, picnic, boat, fish or kayak. There is also a hiking trail along the lake from the picnic area. Website: https://www.pacificorp.com/community/recreation/washington.html
