River experience
The Jordan Valley is one of the most beautiful and rugged rivers left in MI. It can be difficult to navigate. You can rent kayaks, canoes or a raft to maneuver 2, 4, 6 hr trips down the river. It's chilly and be sure and let Dan and Melanie know we sent you. You can also rent paddleboards from them to paddle the lake and they have Saturday morning paddleboard yoga for your enjoyment. Be sure and bring water shoes if you plan to float the Jordan River and you can paddle all the way to the house. I love a late night - 7 pm paddle in from Rogers Bridge Road. It's gorgeous and has eagle and swan nests and unique waterfowl habitat. The river is slow in this portion and enjoyable. They have winter raft trips that are gorgeous with the snow as well. Be sure and touch base with them before your visit to make a reservation. You will NOT regret this river experience. Oh, and rafts to float leisurely with the kids. Don't forget snacks and drinks.

If you're in town and looking for a great 9 hole course and some delicious burgers, fish and shrimp then don't miss either a meal or some golf at the Mallard. Be sure and let Arnold and Angie know Jody sent you. The course is beautiful and they also have a driving range. The beauty of golf in northern MI is that you can tee off at 8 and still get in 9 holes in the summer due to the late sunsets. Especially in July. You can also usually find raspberries growing along most of the local courses in the late summer for a snack.

My favorite baker
We have a large Amish community just outside of town and they have a grocery store and the best bakery I've ever been to. Fresh fried pies on Friday am's and Saturday am's are doughnuts. If it's summer be sure and make a reservation or get up early because they usually sell out. Their bread, pies and whoopie pies are delicious and get some to take home with you. In June/early July they also have strawberries which are DELICIOUS!!! MI strawberries are a bit smaller than the ones you see in the market but much, much sweeter and they make great freezer jam. As a matter of fact, check in the freezer and see if we've left you some to try.

If you LOVE walley, lake trout, salmon or seafood in general, this is a must visit at the beginning of your trip to stock up on local smoked and fresh fish. There's nothing like beer battered walleye or perch if you ask me:). My Grandmpa Mick was a great lakes fisherman for them years ago and I've been eating their fish since I was a wee tot. They have incredible walleye fish dip as well.

John Cross Fisheries

This restaurant is in Ironton, halfway between East Jordan and Charlevoix where you can also experience riding on a car ferry or visit by boat. The boat visit is my personal favorite. They have great views and you can sit inside our outside but the whole restaurant has an open concept with great drinks, local beers and wine as well as some delicious food. I love the lobster roll and caesar salad with a crabcake on top. The fries are incredible - beach style of course and the picnic basket is great to share. There are folks to help you dock your boat so don't be intimated by that, but do leave them a tip. Occasionally, they have gas on the water.

My Moms favorite was a cherry milkshake. They have broasted chicken but the chicken size is very small. Their burgers are all hand made and delicious!! I also love their olive burger and onion rings. You need to walk over through the tourist park to burn some of those calories needed to indulge. As my kids became older I let them ride their bikes through the park.

Directly across the street!!! There's a local sand beach, or you can set up right across from the house on the grass. Playground, volleyball net, boat launch, basketball courts, tennis courts, softball and baseball fields. And most importantly, its FREE!!!!
