Sightseeing

Kilchurn Castle is one of the most photographed ruins in Scotland. Built in 1440 it was unroofed in 1775 and in 1879, a large section blew down during the same great storm that destroyed the Tay Railway Bridge. However, there is still much to see and it is definitely worth a visit. A few minutes drive from the apartment or a 30 minute walk.

This little church is one of Argyll's hidden treasures and is well worth a visit. Construction commenced in 1907 and was completed in 1930. Work was slow as only local labour was used. Stones were not quarried, but were rolled down the hillside and split and shaped on the spot! Turn right at the bottom of our drive and follow the footpath until you come to the kirk on your left hand side (approx. 20 mins walk). The kirk is open all year round and during the summer season there is also a tea room selling delicious home-made soup & sandwiches, cakes, tea/coffee and cold drinks. You might also be here when the kirk is hosting a musical event; if so, do not miss it - all to date have been excellent. Tours can also be arranged.

A great walk (or cycle - if your fit enough!) with excellent views. On the right hand side of the road, just past St. Conan's Kirk, you will come to St. Conan's Road, turn up here and follow the road until it joins with the Hydro Electric Board's road. This tarmac road takes you all the way up to the dam. Worth taking a packed lunch - good to have a reward when you get to the top. If walking from the apartment this will take you roughly 2-3 hours there and back.

A day out in Inveraray is a must. Only a 20-25 minute drive from us. Overlooking the still waters of Loch Fyne, Inveraray is a beautiful, traditional county town of Argyll. It is a former royal burgh and is the ancestral home to the Duke of Argyll. Both the castle and it's gardens/grounds are worth exploring. The Dun na Cuaiche woodland walk and climb to the watchtower are great for a bit of exercise and beautiful views. The castle also has a lovely cafe and interesting gift shop.

Home to a beautiful and peaceful 9 hole parkland course bounded by the river Orchy and set in a rich wildlife habitat of native Scottish woodland. It sits at the head of Loch Awe with its brooding Kilchurn Castle; to the west is the mighty Dalmally Horseshoe of the Cruachan Massif and to the east the majestic slopes of Ben Lui. Formed in 1987 through the hard work of local enthusiasts, the course boasts interesting par 3's and 4's that put more of a premium on shot making and shaping than on distance. It will test the most able golfer but at the same time offer fair and fun golf for beginners, occasional players, families and juniors. Every hole offers a differing challenge with two tees at 6 of the 9 holes.
