Cranny Crow - White Oak Trail to Cranny Crow Overlook is a 4.1 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Mathias, WV, that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, bird watching, and is best used from April until October. You can see 5 counties from the summit. If you want a horseback experience, call the Hidden Trail Stables at (304) 897-5621 - it's about $45 a person for a 2-3 hour ride up and back.

This is a three mile out-and-back hike that has beautiful views and a rocky climb along the WV border in the George Washington / Jefferson National Forest. Views from the summit are spectacular. This hike is less busy than some of the others.

Big Schloss Trail is one of the prettiest and most interesting hikes near Northern Virginia. The hike feels more remote than hikes in nearby Shenandoah National Park. Aside from the 270 degree views at the summit, you get intermittent views along the way, and the trail itself is filled with lichen-covered boulders and has a wonderful enchanted forest feel.

Thomas, WV is a great day trip, and one of two sister towns (the other being Davis, WV). It's about 75 minutes from the cabin, and is known as an artist enclave with many unique shops and live music at the famous Purple Fiddle, all situated along a roaring river.

The sister town to Thomas, Davis is known as the entrance to the Canaan Valley, and has a wonderful main street filled with interesting shops, places to eat, and my favorite brewery in the state - Stumptown Ales.

Get your groceries before you arrive!
We are truly in the middle of the national forest, so it's recommended that you stop on your way here in a city to get your provisions for your stay. If you need something during your stay, most stores listed in the guidebook are a 15-30 minute drive away.

HVAC
Cooling is provided by the wall-mounted air conditioner in the living room/kitchen. Press the power button and you can choose a mode: Fan Only, Cool, or ECO. Use the up/down keys to set the temperature.
TIP: On warm/sunny days, close the blinds in the bedrooms to keep those rooms cool.
Heating is provided by wall-mounted fan heaters located in the living room/kitchen, bathroom, and both bedrooms. **DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING IN FRONT OF THE HEATERS** We have found that the setting of 3-4 on the dials provides a comfortable temperature of 68-72 degrees.

FIREPLACE
The fireplace is a wonderful feature of the cabin. Please do not adjust the knob on the front of the fireplace - this will actuate the flue, which may result in a very smoky experience if closed.
Please keep the fire reasonable in size, and the metal curtains drawn when not actively tending the fire. COLD ashes may go into the metal container located on the back deck. Do not empty the metal container - we will do this for you if the container gets full. Firewood can be purchased at nearby stores, or at the firewood sheds located on Thorne Bottom Road. FIRE EXTINGUISHER UNDER KITCHEN SINK
