History

Peterborough is a city with a long and illustrious history. Occupied since before AD655, this city was once inhabited by the Romans and a fort that was home to a thousand soldiers in the past was found at Longthorpe. Peterborough has long been associated with the brick-making industry thanks to the large amount of clay deposits in the local area. When the railways arrived in the city in the mid-19th century, the industry took off in a big way, and for most of the 20th century the city was the biggest brick producer in the country.
