You’re only an hour’s drive from beautiful Killarney, our tourist capital for good reason. A lovely day out is to go to Muckross House and Gardens. There’s a beautiful cafe there with lots of outdoor seating. You can take a stroll around the grounds and/or a tour of the house. You can take a jarvey ride (horse and cart) from Muckross to the beautiful Torc Waterfall, the jarvey will let you hop out and walk up to the falls and get some photos and then will take you back again. You can also walk to the falls, it’s a beautiful walk through pathways by the lake and the woods. It’s a nice walk for adults and teens but might be a bit too long for little ones. My favourite thing to do is walk towards Torc waterfall but turn off at the Boathouse. You can get a boat trip there across the lake to Dinis Cottage. At Dinis you can get tea, coffee and scones, or hot chocolate and yummy desserts and the boat man will take you back again across the lake. Killarney town is also worth a stroll around. There are lovely shops and cafes and pubs.

John Rs Foodhall on Church Street - 068 21249 Everyone in town raves about John Rs. You can see their website here https://johnrs.com/ I think they don’t have enough outdoor space to open their cafe but they’re still doing a full range of gourmet food and desserts for takeout.

A lovely, family-run takeaway. They do all the usual suspects in terms of burgers, chips and snackboxes (that’s southern fried chicken for those not from Ireland). They also do pizzas and kebabs.

Small supermarket with great deli food: Centra at the corner of Ballygologue Road and Church Street - this is nearest to the house, you can take a short stroll down there in 10 minutes, they’ve got petrol pumps also to fill-up before you set off exploring. They do lovely food here including the usual breakfast rolls, pastries, freshly baked bread and freshly brewed coffee, etc. Get in early for breakfast, they get sold out quickly. They also do yummy cooked dinners but again you’ve got to get there early, they’re usually sold out by 11.00am on the dinners. You can also get anything you want here to cook at the house. They have a small selection of wine also.

I love Supevalu and the one in Listowel is top notch. They’ve got all you want in terms of household goods and food. They’ve got a full off licence, and they’ve a great deli counter. They’ve got a full range of sandwiches, dinners and cooked chicken. Full bakery with freshly baked bread and rolls and glorious cream cakes and buns.

Listowel Garden Centre Thyme Out Cafe - 068 22908 Lovely selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads, waffles and a range of hot and iced coffees. I believe they’ve got good outdoor space. And they’ve got a great garden centre and shopping for clothing and giftwares inside. A gem of a place to visit.

City/town information

Ballybunion is a seaside town about 20 minute drive from Listowel. It has a beautiful beach. My favourite place for swimming. Great waves almost all the time. Don’t go out over your head as there are strong currents but during the summer months there are lifeguards on duty. You can check tide times on this app that you can download called The Sea. You launch the app and click on Activities and click on Swimming and it’ll let you choose the beach, you kinda have to do a bit of zooming in and out but you should find Ballybunion on the map slightly north and west of Listowel. Low tide is great for exploring the caves and there are these amazing blackrocks with tide pools, you can sometimes see little shrimp and crabs in there. There are bigger pools on the rocks that you can swim in but you should have reef shoes for walking on the rocks, the rocks can be hard on the feet and the seaweed is super slippy. Ballybunion also has glorious seaweed baths. You don’t book, you just turn up at Collins Seaweed Baths and they’ll give you a time to return. You can have a coffee or tea and cake while you wait sitting outside watching the waves. The cost is around 25 euro. The best job is a hot seaweed bath and then run straight into the sea after for a swim. Ballybunion also has amusements, penny slots, games and little bumper cars, the amusements are perfect for teens and little ones, but I’m not sure of the covid situation with these. I was there for a weekend in June and they still weren’t open. But they were open last summer so I think they might be able to open again soon. While you’re in Ballybunion make sure to go to Sundae’s on the main street for their home-made ice-cream and they make these wickedly tasty little donuts, deep-fried and shaken up with sugar. There’s also a nice cafe called Coast also on the Main Street with outdoor dining. If that’s too busy there’s a great Supervalu with a hot food deli counter where you can also get sandwiches etc to have for a picnic on the beach. Surf School in Ballybunion https://ballybunionsurf.com/ An kayak around the cliffs and in and out of the caves is a great experience. Again maybe more for adults and teens than little ones. Jason who runs them can be found on facebook https://www.facebook.com/Ballybunion-Kayaking-tours-100604785567773 and only responds on messenger. The tour is tide and wave height dependent eg. you need a calm sea and high tide. The cliff walk is a must do activity in Ballybunion. When you’re on the beach ask any local to point you to the cliff walk. You’ll get to see a blow-hole (9 Daughters Hole), Starlings roost and the Virgin Rock near the Nun’s Strand. The Nun’s strand is the most beautiful beach in the area but it’s not an official beach, no lifeguard and access to it is kinda treacherous. More for teens and adults than little ones. It’s only accessible at low-tide.
