Skakavac (lit. "grasshopper") is a waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) northeast of Sarajevo, above the village of Nahorevo.[3] At 98 metres (322 ft), it is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Balkans[4] and traverses a vertical limestone face. The waterfall freezes in winter into a number of shapes.[5] Part of a stream of the same name, it flows below the peak of the 1,532-metre (5,026 ft) Bukovik into Perak Creek. Vegetation around the waterfall consists of endemic and relict plants. Nearby trails are frequented by mountain bikers and hikers. In 2002, the waterfall and its surroundings were declared a natural monument by the Sarajevo Canton government.[6] Tourist attraction The main tourist attraction of the park - Skakavac waterfall - can be reached by trail.[7] The trailhead is accessible by bus or car and by foot.[8] Visitors can travel to the waterfall trailhead from Nahorevo or hike from Sarajevo through Nahorevo and the Skakavac Nature Preserve.[7] The waterfall may also be reached by vehicle, with rest areas available along the trail.

This beautiful museum is located in Despićeva br. 2, 71000 Sarajevo. Tickets: Adults 3KM, Children 1 KM. Despić House, the oldest part of which was built during the 17th century, was bequeathed to the city of Sarajevo at the end of the 1960s by Pero Despić. Open For Visits: Yes Guided Tours Available: Yes As a descendent of this prominent Sarajevo family, it was Pero’s wish that Despić House, now an annex of the Museum of Sarajevo, serve as an exhibit that would show the way of life for one old Serbian family. It was also a way to preserve the memory of the Despić family, which left an indelible trace on one period of Sarajevo history. The Despićs, who made their fortune as artisans and traders, were members of the Sarajevo elite at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Despić House even served as a precursor to the city’s modern theater, with the first theatrical performances given in the drawing room of the home. The house contains many interesting items which belonged to members of the family, including the will made by the most famous and influential Despić, Hajji Makso, as well as the piano that belonged to his Austrian daughter-in-law, Wilhemina “Mina” Despić, which was produced by a family-run company, Neubauer, in Vienna. "Walter the Hero," which has been installed in Despić House as part of its permanent exhibit, looks at Vladimir "Valter" Perić, leader of Sarajevo's underground resistance movement during Nazi occupation. The exhibit includes some of his personal items and also looks at Sarajevo and surrounding areas during World War II. Igor Radovanović has created the exhibit. The Despić family also donated another house to the city of Sarajevo, which is now the Museum of Literature and Performing Arts of BiH.

Sarajevo war tunnel | Best kept secret of besieged city. The total length of the tunnel was close to 800 meters, 785.5 meters to be exact. The whole tunnel was dug in less than 4 months, imagine that? It gets even more fascinating when you know that Army did not have anything else than their bare hand, showles and picks. With that, they also had wheelbarrows to carry the detritus out of the tunnel. The total amount of soil removed was close to 3000 m3, while on the other hand, 45 tons of steel and close to 200 m3 of wood were used to construct the tunnel. The biggest problem while constructing the Sarajevo war tunnel was underwater which was frequently thrown out by hands as no other equipment was available.

The Emperor’s Mosque is Sarajevo’s oldest mosque and one of the oldest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Open For Visits: Yes Reservations: No Reservations needed Guided Tours Available: Yes Sarajevo was attacked in 1480 by the despot, Vuk Grgurević, leader of King Matija Korvina’s Hungarian troops. The mosque suffered extensive damage and a total reconstruction was carried out during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and it was at this time that the mosque took its current form. During the period of Austro-Hungarian rule, some of the adjacent structures were knocked down and a new building was erected which would come to house the seat of the Reis-ul-Ulema, office of the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is a cemetery behind the mosque where prominent Sarajevans were buried, such as Sheikh Ibrahim Bistrigija; Mula Muhamed Emin and the Bosnian muhafiz, Abdulah Pasha. Atomic war command, also known as the Ark and nicknamed Tito's bunker, is a former nuclear bunker and military command center located near the town of Konjic in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built to protect Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and up to 350 members of his inner circle in the event of an atomic conflict, the structure is made up of residential areas, conference rooms, offices, strategic planning rooms, and other areas. The bunker remained a state secret until after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Built between 1953 and 1979 inside a hill at the foot of the Zlatar Mountain, the ARK is the largest nuclear shelter, and one of the largest underground facilities, ever built in the former Yugoslavia. For over a decade after its completion, it was the most secret military installation in the country. All construction workers were carefully selected and vetted, signing a contract of silence, and all staff members held the highest security clearance. In 1979, when work was completed after 26 years and $4.6 billion in construction costs. The best would be to go with a car (Sarajevo-Konjic route). This is the location close to the Rafting at Neretva.

The Aškenazi Synagogue was built in 1902 for Sarajevo’s Jews, who began to arrive in greater numbers once BiH was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Open For Visits: Yes Reservations: Accepting Reservations Guided Tours Available: Yes The temple is located on the left bank of the Miljacka River, between Drvenija and Ćumurija Bridges, and was designed by the famous architect, Karlo Paržik. This was the first religious object to be built in Sarajevo in the Pseudo-Moorish style. It is believed that Paržik’s designs for this Sarajevo synagogue (at that time, the third largest temple in Europe) were based on the synagogue in Budapest. Construction was entrusted to Ludwig Jungwirth and the work and painting done on the interior was carried out by master painter, Ludwig Oisner. Even after the Second World War, with the high number of Sarajevo Jews who were lost, the Aškenazi Synagogue remained the only active Jewish temple in the city.

The Old Jewish Temple, also known as the Old Synagogue and the Great Temple (Il Kal Grandi), is the oldest place of worship for Jews in Sarajevo. It was built at the end of the 16th century in the part of town then known as Velika Avlija, a small Jewish neighborhood in Sarajevo’s Baščaršija. It was engulfed in flames on several occasions, suffering the worst damage in 1697 and again in 1788. After the fire of 1788, which also spread to the Jewish neighborhood and adjacent dwellings, the synagogue’s roof collapsed. The temple’s current appearance dates from 1813, when it underwent reconstruction. After Nazi occupation began in 1941, the synagogue was looted and demolished. It was here that Sarajevo’s Jews were detained before being deported to concentration camps. At the end of World War II the temple was used as a repository. Some time after the war (in 1957) the structure underwent massive reconstruction and in 1966 it became the Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and an annex of the Museum of Sarajevo. The Old Jewish Temple was made a National Monument of BiH in 2003. Ticket price for adults is 3 KM and 1 KM for children. The Museum is closed on Saturdays. A must see.

The house was built by the prominent Glođo family from Sarajevo, one of whose members is the famous kadija (judge) Munib ef. Glodo was known for his fight for Bosnia's autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. Left without male heirs, the house passed through family ties into the ownership of the also distinguished Svrzo family. Svrzo's house is a typical example of the architecture of that time, divided into selamluk - public part and haremluk - family part. Bought from the Svrzo family, renovated and opened to the public in the 1960s. After the siege of Sarajevo, the house was reconstructed and reopened to the public in 1997. During 2005, another major reconstruction of the building was carried out, primarily the renovation of the roof, cobblestones, dilapidated installations and the restoration of the paintings on the musandari in Veliki Halvat, which had lost their color over time. For this cultural monument, the Museum has published the Monograph of Svrza kuća in Bosnian and English. Address: Glodjina 8 (not far from the War Childhood Museum)

Products of those two companies are representable in case you would like to buy Bosnian products as a present to someone who deserves it back home :)

Rafting

Only 50 minutes by vehicle from our apartment is Konjic and rafting on Neretva river with this excellent team. My family and I did it three times and we plan to go for it again :) The best would be to rent a car but you can also go by train (Sarajevo-Konjic). Rafting equipment and tasty breakfast and lunch are included in the price. In 2023 the price was 80 KM per person (42 EUR).
