It’s a lovely walk either up over the top of Mount Edgcumbe grounds through the deer park or through the woods and gardens with regular glimpses of the sea and Plymouth Sound. There’s a beautiful Camellia Trail when in season too.

This is a lovely beach just outside Crafthole and once down the lane to get to it, there are a number of steps to get down onto the beach. There is a beach cafe at the top (not got a great reputation unfortunately!) but the beach itself is nice to walk along and if you go around the corner at the end, there is a smaller sandy bay too.

Fantastic beach at low tide with wide open sands and interesting rock formations on the cliffs. Park at the top and take the path down (it’s steep in some places) then treat yourself after the climb back up to a drink from the red snacks van that is often parked up in the lay-by.

Port Eliot is another beautiful estate with stunning gardens and grounds. There are some gorgeous walks through woodlands and parks and there is also a tea room and a pretty old church that you can go into too. Once a year they hold the Port Eliot Festival which is a music event held over a few days. They also have other acts and events throughout the year, including Tom Jones in 2022!

Things To Do

There are some great places to visit and things to do near the Fort, so hopefully here are a couple of ideas.
Royal William Yard blends Plymouth’s historic naval past with award winning design and beautiful architecture. Home to a stunning collection of Grade 1 listed properties, the yard has converted previously used Victualling buildings into a wide variety of shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation. It has its own marina and a lovely artistic community which holds a range of events throughout the year. You can either catch the Cremyl Ferry (foot passengers only) from Mount Edgcumbe or you can drive around and park in the Pay & Display car park on site.

Why not do a lovely walk around the gardens of Mount Edgcumbe and then treat yourself to a tasty meal or drink at The Orangery - a beautiful big traditional glass building that offers lunch, snacks, ice creams and cream teas. You can sit inside or out and in front of the lovely garden that bursts into colourful bloom in the spring and summer.
