It has been the center of Christian worship in the town for over 700 years and is central to a large group of parishes in the area. It was originally founded by Robert de Betun, Bishop of Hereford, in the 13th century. The church, in its current form, was dedicated in 1316. There is evidence that suggests that there was a Saxon and Norman church there before the current one was built. The Chapel within the church, currently called the Markye Chapel, has undergone a number of name changes over time in commemoration of various Ross-on-Wye families. During the 17th century, Philip Markye gave an almshouse in Edde Cross Street but this has since been removed but the family name is commemorated. The Chapel has undergone restoration and is currently used for meditative prayer and weekday services. The Chapel commemorates the armed services associated with Ross in World War I and their regimental badges are on its screen. In the churchyard is the Plague Cross that was erected to mark the graves where the three hundred or so townsfolk who were buried by night and without coffins during a savage outbreak of the plague in 1637.

Symonds Yat is one of the most iconic and beautiful locations in the Dean Wye. There are three distinct parts: Yat Rock, a viewpoint with incredible views over the River Wye; and the villages of Symonds Yat East and Symonds Yat West on either side of the river. The only way from one side to the other is a long drive or a passenger ferry. Canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular, guided tours can be taken, or equipment hired. The lower river has rapids making it popular with kayakers, and the area is perfect for birdwatching.

Well known for its cider and cattle, did you know Hereford has given its name to two Parisian suburbs and been home to both saints and kings? Indeed, Saint Thomas de Cantilupe was a former Bishop of Hereford whilst King Henry the IV based his secure stronghold in Hereford to repel Owain Glyndwr. Adding to the wider county’s impressive heritage are its alumni of famous former residents – Sir Edward Elgar, Nell Gwynne, David Garrick, Ellie Goulding, and even (the voice of) Miss Piggy! But it’s the city’s current residents and visitors that bring it to life.
