Walking on Anglesey

Walking on Anglesey. There are loads of great walks around the island that we are sure you will be able to enjoy whatever the weather. Indeed, Anglesey walks have often been rated as some of the best in the country, with some fabulous secluded beaches as well as woods and forest. Anglesey Coast path. The Anglesey Coastal path is a network of paths, about 130 miles in total, that surrounds the island. You can walk to the coastal path directly from the cottage door and then either turn left and walk either towards Red Wharf Bay or right and walk towards LLanddona with it’s remote and windswept beach. (It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to the beach from the cottage) For a more serious walk the coastal path has been split into sections that can be walked in a day. Use the following link to see the suggested routes. https://www.visitanglesey.co.uk/en/about-anglesey/isle-of-anglesey-coastal-path/ For many of them you would be able to get public transport back from the start of the walk. For example you can get a bus to Beaumauris and Benllech from the main road in the village making it easy to walk from the cottage and get public transport back. Local walks from the cottage. There is a public footpath almost opposite the cottage that takes you down to the beach (15 min walk) once there you can go either direction on the coastal path. If you turn left you can walk around Red Wharf Bay to village where you will find The Ship Inn, a very old pub trading since the early 1700’s. The walk to the bay from the cottage is about 40 mins (one direction) It serves traditional pub meals, not a huge menu but decent food. I’d check the opening hours as they have been very varied over the past year. Also in Red Wharf Bay is The Boathouse restaurant which is open every day. The cottage is also on the Pentraeth Heritage trail circular walk. Details of this are on the information boards in the carpark at the top of the road in the village. The walk takes about 2 - 2.5 hours There is a 5k circular walk to the Beach from the cottage. Go out the cottage and turn left to the main road. Walk past the Bull Inn pub and you will find a lane. Turn right down here and it takes you to the beach. Turn right on the beach and walk around the foreshore towards the beach carpark (on the sand) Once you have gone over the old stone bridge turn right and walk back up the hill to the village. Go right at the top and it will take you back to the village carpark at the top of Chapel street. (About 1 hour) You can also walk from the cottage to Pentraeth forest where there are many trails. To get there walk to the village centre and turn left. As you walk past the village hall/playing field follow the road around the corner to the right. Continue walking along this road (be careful as there are no pavements) until the get to the forest on your left. Once there you can follow many different paths) If you are lucky you might even spot the Red Squirrels that live there. Walks further afield Further afield we would recommend driving to Moelfre and picking up the coastal path and walk around the coast towards Lligwy beach. This will take about 1 – 1.5 hours if you don’t stop. (2-3 round trip) It passes some stunning beaches and goes over fabulous cliff tops giving amazing views over the sea. Lligwy beach has a woodfired pizza shack and coffee shop which are great. (Check the opening times if relying on these as they vary according to the time of year.) Moelfre itself has a range of places to get food and drink. South Stack lighthouse has some good walks although the lighthouse is currently shut. You can pick up the coastal path and easily walk up Holyhead mountain for some amazing views of the island. During the Summer season the cliffs are covered with nesting seabirds and you can even see puffins if you look carefully. Year round you should be able to see the resident Chough’s flying over the cliffs. There is an RSPB centre there with a café which is open everyday. Another great place to visit is Llanddwyn Island which you can walk to along the beach from Newborough reserve. There are also many trails through the woods on the reserve. Snowdonia Mountain range It only takes about 30 minutes to drive to the Snowdonia mountains where you can pick up walks to the summit from Pen-y-Pass (LLanberas) it is possible to do the walk in a day – plan first and take food and drink as the restaurant at the top is often shut. There are OS maps in the draw to help you plan your routes if you are considering a longer walk. Generally, there aren’t many walks that have pubs or restaurants on them. However, there are flasks, picnic ware and rucksacks in the cottage so please feel free to use them if you want to. We hope you enjoy walking (or driving) around this beautiful island.

South Stack light house is well worth a visit, particularly if you are interested in bird watching. During the Summer months the cliffs are teaming with nesting sea birds. It is even possible to spot the odd Puffin or two if you look carefully. There are also resident Choughs that live on the cliffs and you can often see them flying low over the cliffs. Once at South Stack you can follow the coastal path and pick up the footpath to walk to the summit of Holyhead Mountain (not as high as it sounds). A gentle climb to the top will take about 40 minutes from the carpark and is well worth it with views over the island towards the Snowdonia mountain range. There is a RSPB visitor centre that is open year round for information. It also has has a shop and a cafe. Currently the lighthouse is closed to visitors due to Covid 19 restrictions. There are a few tours of the external site. Information can be found on their website https://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthouse-visitor-centres/south-stack-lighthouse-visitor-centre

A visit to Plas Newydd is a must for lovers of architecture as well as those who enjoy walking around the gardens. There is also a lovely national trust cafe in the grounds. The house is about a 20 minute drive from the cottage on the edges of the Menai straits. Plas Newydd, which means new mansion in Welsh, sits along the shore of the Menai Strait. The ancestral home of the Marquess of Anglesey, its history stretches back over 5000 years to a Neolithic burial chamber nearby. With superb views of the mountains of Snowdonia across the Menai Strait, it’s easy to see why a house has stood in this same spot since the early 16th century. The house itself has changed over the years, from the original Tudor house, to the changes made by the fashionable architect James Wyatt in 1793-9 and the modernisation during the 1930s when the family of the 6th Marquess made Plas Newydd their main residence. It is also home to a collection of Rex Whistler artwork from the early 20th century.

Beaumaris is a lovely small town on the banks of the Menai Straits. There are lots of small independent shops and restaurants to visit. There are also regular weekend craft fairs and antique markets, especially during the holiday season. There is a lovely small pier where you can get on a boat for a trip to Puffin Island or a rib ride down the Straits. Why not try crabbing off the pier - there are crabbing buckets in the cottage if you want to try this out - don't forget your bacon! Best place to park if you are going for a visit is in the main carpark alongside the Menai Straits near the pier. It's only £5 for the whole day so you do not need to worry about rushing back to your car. It is also well worth a visit to the castle if you like looking round historic buildings.

The Golden Fry (Finney's at The Golden Fry Benllech ) serves the best fish and chips we have ever had, and we've tried many around the country. We would definitely recommend this fish and chip shop. It's just off the main road in the centre of Benllech, next to the Tesco Express. You can then walk or drive down to the beach to eat them with a fabulous view over the sea. The Ship Inn has been trading as a public house since 1740. It is a very traditional pub in a fantastic setting overlooking the sea with easy access to the beach when the tide is out. The menu is traditional and fairly small although the food it serves is good. Best to check on opening times if you are making a special visit as it can close quite early. It is usually open for the lunchtime period and then it re-opens for the evening, often closing quite early (by 9pm) especially during non-peak times. (Stays open later in the Summer) It's a great place to sit and have an early evening drink, especially on a warm night. You can walk to The Ship Inn from the cottage in about 40 minutes. The walk itself is lovely and goes around the bay on the coastal path. (details in the cottage booklet) It is a 5-10 minute drive http://www.shipinnredwharfbay.co.uk/

The beach can be accessed by walking from the cottage down the track/path just down the lane. It is about a 15/20 minute walk down to the beach. Or, you can walk/drive down the road from the village centre. Turn left at the church/pub junction. Turn 1st left after the football pitch. Turn left down towards the beach ('Traeth' sign) It's about 1 mile by road. You can park your car on the beach ( don't park to far away when the tide is out as it comes back in and up into the car park area!) At high tide the sea comes right up to the coastal path that goes around the bay. Although it's usually possibly to walk round, even at the highest tide. There are marshy grassland areas that are uncovered as the tide goes out making it a haven for wading birds. You can spot many species, little egrets, curlews, redshank, dunlin, shell duck to name a few and you don't even have to get out of your car if the weather is awful - just park on the beach and watch from the comfort of your car! The tide goes out a huge distance at low water, often it's hard to see where the sea has gone! This leaves a huge expanse of sand. Be careful if you try to walk out across the bay as there are areas where it is very soft mud and you can sink in quite quickly. It's a fascinating beach and bay to explore and a place where you can sit peacefully and take in the amazing scenery of the bay.

This is probably the best beach to go to if you have small children with you. 3 miles - approx 10 min drive . Lots of lovely clean sand to dig in with other interesting areas to explore. The tide does go out quite a long way (as is the case with most of the beaches on this coast) so a bit of a walk to the sea for paddling at low water. There is a large pay and display carpark with public toilets. There is also a beach shop/cafe and an ice cream shop by the carpark. It is a short walk up into the town to access all the other shops and cafes there.

There are public carparks - a small pay and display at the harbour and a larger free car park as you enter the village. The main harbour beach is pebbles and slopes quite steeply but is a great place for a swim. If you walk around the coastal path towards the life boat house there are a few other smaller beaches, each slightly different, some sandy and with good rocky spots to sit and fish from.

A glorious sandy beach just outside Moelfre - 7 miles approx 15 - 20 minute drive. Some good rock pools when the tide is out. Shallow beach with the tide going out a long way. There is a pay and display car park next to the beach and public toilets (not sure on opening times especially since covid changes) Just by the car park is an independent cafe and wood fired pizza shack. Opening times vary ( although always shut by 6pm) They tend to be open in the school holidays, particularly during the better weather and at weekends.

Llanddona beach can be reached by walking along the Anglesey Costal path from Pentraeth beach (pick it up at the car park - turn right) This is a lovely remote walk that takes you around the bay. It takes about 40 - 1 hour to walk to the beach which is a long, open stretch of sandy and pebble beach (amazing shells can be found there) You can also drive there - 7 miles from the cottage. Be prepared for an interesting descent down to the beach from the main village - very narrow and very steep roads! (fabulous views from the top of the cliffs looking over the bay) There is pay and display car parking at the beach , public toilets (check opening) and a small cafe that sells drinks, hot food and ice creams.
