If you want to get off the beaten track, take a half day to visit Lake Bafa. If you can find a tour guide, you might have the pleasure of seeing some pre-historic cave drawings or an old monastery.

If Ephesus is too far, or too crowded for you, don't miss the ancient city of Priene. Just as impressive (possibly more scenic with the towering cliff as a backdrop) with far fewer tourists. Also, it's closer with about a one hour and fifteen minute drive.

Visit the ancient city of Iasos without setting foot in your car. Just walk down the hill to the end of the bay and you can enjoy the ruins practically in your backyard. We like to visit the site at dusk and then head over to Ceyar's for a fish dinner.

There's a small (nearly private) beach down the hill!

Continue down the street past our house and at the last road to your right, there's a gate and a footpath leading down the hill to a small beach used by the locals. The state of the beach is a little hit and miss, as occasionally people leave garbage behind or it washes up. But it's close and fairly easy to access!

Find the ancient Roman Villas on the peninsula

Italian archaeologists and their students restored some of the ancient Roman Villas on the peninsula across the bay. To find them, walk along the path at the foot of the hill, parallel to the water, towards the restored tower in the water. When you reach the end of the peninsula, start walking up the hill and midway up you will find the villas and the beautiful mosaics and frescoes that have been uncovered. If you continue walking around the other side of the peninsula, you may even come across parts of the ancient amphitheater as well as other structures. Have fun exploring!
