City/town information

It’s hard to believe when confronting the sheer scale of Dubai, but most of the city was built in just the last 50 years. It makes the world’s biggest shopping mall, tallest skyscraper, and a host of ultra-luxurious hotels all the more bewildering. Still, amid all the glamor and superlatives, there are vestiges of a pre-skyscraper Dubai, in its winding souks and the vast empty desert that surrounds the city. Here’s how to navigate both sides of this always-growing metropolis.

Food scene

Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, jewellery or something a little more decorative, this old-style bazaar is the perfect place to indulge in a little retail therapy. Inside, it’s an endless maze of tiny alleys and wood-framed walkways, with a colourful treasure trove of little stands and stalls that sell all kinds of clothing and local trinkets. Souk Madinat Jumeirah is less traditional than the souks you’ll see in the Old Town, but there are still lots of little touches that give a flavour of local culture; the wind tower accents and handsome Moorish design are the perfect homage to the heritage of an old Arabian market.

Journey into Dubai's past with a visit to the heritage district located on the banks of the Dubai Creek. Once the entryway to the Gulf’s most successful pearl diving port, the Creek's legendary presence is still felt today as fishermen and merchants criss-cross the calm waters in their traditional dhows. By its banks is a testament to Old Arabia – the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Gypsum and coral buildings have been painstakingly restored to their original glory, complete with iconic windtowers that cast a contrasting silhouette to the city’s modern skyline. This neighbourhood is home to some of the city’s finest cultural gems. If you explore, you'll find XVA Art Gallery that showcases contemporary Arabian works, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, where visitors can learn more about Emirati traditions. Nearby is the Al Fahidi Fort – officially constructed in 1781, it's the oldest building in the city.

For heritage items better shop in Souq

If you want to buy spices, pashminas or other local produce better buy in Souq than malls. However for dates and other local food best shopping is in Carrefour or other food mall.
