South Durras is the South Coast’s best kept secret, wonderfully low key and relaxing, a place to completely unwind. It has resisted the push for development and remains one of the last places that recall your childhood beach holidays. More than that, the unspoilt beaches and majestic forests of towering spotted gums are the place of an immensely important geological feature. You'll see intriguing rock formations rich in fossils reaching back to the ice ages and the effects of volcanic eruptions.

My Favourite Eateries

These are my 'go to' spots for good dining. Check Instagram @foodandtravelsecrets for more details.
Cuppitt’s Winery is just 40 minutes from South Durras and perfect for a Sunday outing. I recommend booking a wine tasting with Lisa, an awesome host ($10 pp to taste around 8-9 wines) and booking the Deck and ordering off the outdoor menu. The Italian pork and fennel sausage pizza is great ($28) as is the pickled cabbage and fennel salad. ($12). Bout a bout wine by the glass $13 is terrific. Next time I’d add the cheese platter ($26) as Cupitts makes their own. Music on the lawns on Sundays. Combine it with an explore of nearby historic Milton.

Just 4 mins out of Milton is the lovely Milk Haus cafe. Set in a 1900’s cheese factory overlooking the scenic valley their whole foods seasonal menu uses produce from their own kitchen garden and hen house. Open Thursday to Monday 8:30am-3pm you can sit inside or out or snuggle up near the wood fire. The staff are very warm and generous in their hospitality. Meals $25-30, wine about $12 for a generous pour. I’ve added the HAUS salmon gravlax, Pulled pork with lemon labneh and Ricotta Gnudi ( like gnocchi) to May God use this new year to my wishlist from the Autumn menu. Excellent coffee (in particular with the Hausmade almond milk).

@eurobodallabotanicgarden has a wonderful cafe for breakfast lunch or coffee. Eat inside or out! Mossy Point Cafe now run the cafe and the menu is good. I can recommend the $19 Goddess Bowl with excellent falafel, kale chips, pickled radish and beetroot hummus. The cakes are an amazing selection too. But seedlings native to the area, browse the excellent shop, go for a walk or just enjoy the glorious surroundings. Cafe Open Wednesday to Sunday 9-4pm. Helpfully it’s order and pay at the till so no problems splitting bills. No alcohol available.

Plenty of nearby walks from 1 hour to the whole day

The beach north of the headland at the end of Cookies Beach is great for walking. You can walk all the way to North Durras, about 30-45 mins away, if the lake is closed or it’s low tide). Keep walking and you can get to Depot Beach which is about 2.5 hours there and back. There are lots of nice walks to secluded beaches in the National Park at the end of the street too. 'All Trails' is a good app to download (free) to see the good walks in Murramarang National Park close by. You can walk to Emily Miller Beach and back in one hour or add on Dark Beach and Myrtle Beach too if you’ve got 1.5-2 h

Getting supplies and eating out

Bateman's Bay is just 15 minutes away for all the supermarkets and restaurants. But there is no real shop or restaurants in South Durras. However there is a poolside takeaway cafe/bistro just 10 minutes walk away at Murramarang Resort. Open 8-8pm Tuesday to Saturday and 8-4pm Sunday and Monday. Bar and sells coffee too. The Enhance service station at the Durras Drive turnoff sells basics like bread, milk and alcohol. There's also a hydroponic vegetable farm about 900m on the left after you turn into Durras Drive, usually open until 5pm. Their tomatoes and berry icecream are great!
